SHIPS LCG CLASS HISTORY In 1940, four hundred seventeen recruits enlisted for a three-year Hhitchi' aboard the NU. S. S. Pottstown Senior High. Student officers Lukens, Egolf, Suchoza, and Nester supervised our crew of apprentice seamen during the first year of service. The following year, with the crew reduced! to three hundred seventy-one, officers Lightowler, LaPish, Suchoza, and Lau kept our ship afloat. Our third and last year aboard .the vessel, HP. H. S., saw a great many changes. Our country had been at war for over a year. Many crew members found it ad- visable to accept positions in local war plants, while still others joined the armed forces. However, under our able officers, Weaver, Suchoza, Lau, and Nester, the remainder of the crew were safely guided through the final ten monthsf of ap- prenticeship. Ours was one of the few classes to have three different football! coaches during its Nhitchf, Mr. Geoffrey B. c'Dutch,' Slagle supervised the game while we were lowly Ubootsf' During the next season, Mr. Heber T. Meyers served as head coach in both football and track, however, he was 'ftransferredw to another ship by order of the War Department. Because of the emergency, an order of transfer was also handed his assistant, Mr. Morrell Grigg. Mr. Earl Strange, mentor, was then re-established in that capacity. After com- a half years of our training, Mr. Edward Good succeeded Mr. as commander of the varsity- basketeers. No need to say that successful season-in fact, they won .the Suburban' Conference former football pleting one and Irvin L. Keener they had a very Three Championship! Baseball, too, had a change of coaches, Mr. Strange resigned and was re- placed by Mr. LeRoy Bachnian. Mr. Good had charge of the track squads dur- ing our first and third years, with Mr. Meyens handling the Mthin-cladsn the sec- ond year. However, the most outstanding change in the sports field was the in- stallation of an accelerated program of physical education for boys. Morale among the members of the crew was high. Dances and skating parties offered a means of diversion and pleasure for all. The most outstanding morale boosters were the Junior Prom and the Commencement Dance at the end of our third year. These gay affairs were well attended by seamen aboard the H1943 P. H. Sf, The annuall class trip to Washington was eliminated because of war restrictions. Baccalaureate services and Class Night exercises were mem- orable occasions held aboard our ship. The foremost undertaking of the crew was the production of '4New Firesf, Under the direction of Miss K. Arline Hartman and Miss Mildred Christman, the comedy was presented to three highly appreciative audiences. Finally, we are about to graduate from the ranks of Nbootsw into the ure- servew of Pottstown High. Our only Wish is that all of our shipmates be present at any and all of the activities we sponsor as alumni of P. H. S. H - - l' - .- WE, the Class of 194-3, of the borough of Pottstown, State of Pennsylvania, being of sound mind and memory, do make, publish, and declare this! our last will and testament, in manner and form as follows: I. Paul Frick is handing his musical ability down to Robert Lozenski, who we are sure will succeed as Frickie', has. II. 'Io some deserving Junior, we will Mae Wilhelmis graceful strutting as drum ma- yor. III. To Mary Jane Ecker, we will the graciousness and sweetness of Muriel Prutzmanls lovely voice. IV. To Mary Sands, we will Regina Suchozais knowledge of Dale Carnegie's book, 'gHow to Win Friends and Influence Peoplef, We are sure Mary is going to be a N popular leader of her class as Jeannie was of ours. V To Mr. VonDrach and his attendance office helpers, we will a lie detector to help them pick out the holiday snatchersv from the ill. VI. To any unsuspecting Junior who will have it, we will Paul Harp's crew cut. VII. The Seniors will their desire to take a hop, skip, and jump down to the corner drug store during study hall to the Juniors. fHope you get away with itll VIII. We do not want to deprive the Junior class of Ed. Galliganfs debating techniqueg therefore, we are willing it to Alvin Weiss. IX. To Sonia Stein, we will the daily exercise obtained by Betty Miller from chewing gum. X Nancy Keller is the fortunate heir to all of Thelma Gresh's blue slips and excellent report cards. XI We bequeath the corridor romance of Ruth Lau and Johnny I..aPish to the lovelorn Juniors, and hope that their associations may be everlasting. XII. To the timid souls of the Junior class, we leave the inspiration of Douglas Weaverls daily chatter. XIII. To the basketball team of 1943-4-4, we hereby extend our compliments for the suc- cess they will surely achieve, as did the 1942-43 squad. XIV To the remaining members of the school, we will a spirit of untiring effort in the purchase of war bonds and stamps, so that memories of school years may be revered. XV. Joyce Fox is named as heir to Fay 1'lutkin's creative writing ability, which she will need in taking over Fay's job as editor-in-chief of our UP. H. S. News. XVI. Ed. Ross is the grateful heir to Fred Riegnerls swimming prowess. XVII. We hereby bequeath to the Class of '44, water wings to be used when Houndering in the oft-stated deep water. We empower them with the right to stay afloat as we have done. XVIII. Robert McDevitt's frequent vacations, fyou might call it bagging? we will to Bob Falardeau. XIX. To some deserving personi in the Junior class. we leave Lawrence Garner's out- standing French ability and all the A's and Bls he dreamed of attaining. XX. Now that they are graduating and going out into the world, we will the silliness of Mary Anne Mills, Babs Moore, and Lucy Jackson to Sonia Stein, Helen Nagle, and Gwen Strunk. XXI. To our faculty, principal, and vice principal, we leave our thanks for the under- i standing and guidance they so efiiciently gave us the past three years. XXII. We name as the sole executor of this our last will and testament-VICTORY. We are certain that at this time Victory can execute and bring to fulfillment all our hopes for the Class of 1944. In witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands and affixed our seal this 5 first day of June, in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and forty- three. S. S. TRCDIAD Dote, June Ll, 1953 if Stand by to shoot the sun! . . . the readings constitute a preview of what the members of the crew of the U. S. S. Troiad, 194-3, are doing after sailing through uncharted waters for a decade. MARK ONE! Latitude, 40 degrees north-vicinity of Pottstown! What a transformation! The town has given way to the cityg our former home town is now a thriving metropolis! That ultra-modern department store on the corner is owned and managed by Harry Grandy, the eity's most successful businessman. A He and the community at large are quite proud of the fact that the modern structure was built by the nationally famous civil engineers, Ferdinand Heller and Merlyn Wolcott. The store is staffed by many of our former classmates. Jeannie Suchoza, re- cently acclaimed by the New York Fashion Congress as the outstanding designer of the year, is consultant on style. Betty Miller, whose new coiffure has electri- fied America, is in charge ofthe beauty salon. Lovely members of the modeling staff are Anne Psota and Lucille Boberts, who have a knack of making all clothes look winsome. By the way, those fascinating windows and the marvelous color scheming of the interior of the store are the handiwork of both lrene Petzer and Marie Karas. The expert efhciency of the store may be traced. to the fact that Kathryn Nester is in charge of the otlice staff. Betty Rhoads, Florence Baker, Ruth Miller, Elizabeth Fecak, LaRue Frech, Helen Swavely, and Grace Schaeffer are the stenographers who deftly carry out the orders of the executives, thus enabling the store to serve the public. Satisfied customers who shop by telephone are ac- commodated by Margaret Speilman and Marion Bartchak, the girls at the switch- board. MARK TWO! Latitude, 39 degrees north-the fair city of Baltimore! Here at the famed Johns Hopkins Hospital we find Evelyn Schaffer and Mae Wilhelni conversing with a handsome young interne. Both nurses, however, have rings on the third finger of their left hands. Guess you were wrong about the interne! Other P. H. S. lassies now wearing the white caps of the nursing profession are Anne Potpinko, Anna Kopcho, Geraldine Gerhart, ,lane Sooy, Eleanor Parker, Arline Hoff, and Jeanne Moffitt. Betty Davidheiser and Betty Bolognese are nursesi aides. Ruth Lau, assisted by Evelyn Taglieber, is the dietitian at the hospital. Marion Zimmerman, Sara Jane Dunlap, and Phyllis Dore are employed as tech- nicians. Eleanor Keene, Betty Fox, and Mary Palladino keep the office records in order. MARK THREE! Latitude, 39 degrees north-the industrial section of the city. At the huge Glenn Martin plant, we see many familiar faces. Over there are some of our 'cpalsw-Robert Shantz, Robert Jameson, Mattheis Peto, Joseph! Fritsch, and Martin Bandazzo, who are all, by this time, expert machinists. Al- ton Missimer and Anthony Marehione are among the many who make the blue- printsg Crier Schwoyer is a mechanic who helps to keep the planes in top condi- tion so that test pilots Charles Weller and Linwood Peterman can get the most out of them. In the office we find chief engineers Harry Fillman and John Kugler, as well as a competent staff. ln fact, theyfre also former shipmates of ours: Maurice Levin, Wallace Reigner, Florence Giangiacomo, Isabel Fillmen, Beatrice Shirey, Dorothy Wentworth, and Eleanor Slaby. Although there are but few accidents, the plant employs several nurses, should need for them arise. ln this capacity we find Ange Bongarzone, Maybella Calloway, Doris Crater, and Sally Roellcr. MARK FOUR! Latitude, 41 degrees north-the metropolis of New York, a place about which all our shipmates dreamed! Ed. Calligan sits importantly behind the city editor's desk of a large news- paper. Sidney Weiss and James Ottaviano are both featured sports writers, their favorite topic being the last world series in which John Kurtz and Gerry Egolf proved themselves outstanding players. Away from the seeming disorder of the newspaper office, in a west side high school, our own Alma Mater is well represented. Faculty members include Thelma Gresh, Jeanne DeTurck, and Lois Kinckinerg Barbara Jean Keim is the instructor in music, Doris Smith, in art, and Gayle Galloway, in physical educa- tion. Career Day brought several of our classmates to this school to speak. Gloria Query spoke on opportunities in radio work, Adel-a Kupeski, on civil service workg John Pornponio, a flight instructor at LaGuardia Field, on aeronauticsg and Bob Hoffman, an expert cabinet maker, gave pointers on his vocation. MARK FIVE! Again New York, a city large enough to absorb many more persons! William Henry's dream has come true! Each Sunday, he preaches to an in- terested congregation in a beautiful church. Muriel Prutzman, whose voice used to thrill us, is organist and musical director in the church across the street. Once more in the business district, we meet Virginia Egolf and Rita McCon- nell, who are secretaries for the law firm of McDevitt and Davidheiser. ln the same building, Charles Fleischer plans advertisements that have already brought him fame. Down on a smaller street, Mary Focht has her shop. She is, at this time, the most sought after interior decorator in the city, her ideas have trans- formed the apartments of many of the 'csmart setf' Lawrence Garner, who used to play in our band, is now a successful busi- nessman. However, he still finds time for his music and for helping his young son to learn the intricacies of the alto horn. Paul Frick and Luther Medinger are both featured soloists with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Away from Carnegie Hall, in the night club sec- tor, we find Jessie Baker Hwowingv the patrons of Leon's and Eddie's with her Hbluesn singing. MARK SIX! Throughout this continent and perhaps on others, our fellows, our classmates, our shipmates, our friends, all are busily engaged in following the dictates of their minds and hearts. Theylre successful, theylre busy, but they do occasionally enjoy a bit of reminiscence about the days spent on board that Hgrand old shipfl the U. S. S.
