CHARLES YOCUM VOCATIONAL IOHN I. YONKOVITC ACADEMIC Chuck H,lt uYonkU Football 1-2-3: Art 1-2-3 TRGIAD as CLASS HISTORY RDERS were issued for the transfer of three hundred sixty students from their training field on North Franklin Street to a base for higher learning, to go into effect September, 1939. Almost all of the original three hundred sixty reported for active duty at high school for a period of three years. For the first year of service, Edward Smith was elected as President to captain the company, with Kenneth Hines as its Vice President and Hazel Weber and Doris Rawn as Secretary and Treasurer, respectively. The next two years, Smith continued as first in student command and jake Hospador was chosen as Vice President. Doris Rawn continued as Treasurer, while Rita Connell took over as Secretary. Each officer successfully executed his designated duties and pro- moted all activities in the interest of the school. During the first two years, this class sponsored several successful roller skating parties and participated in all school dances. Carrying out their orders for the com- plete three-year period of training were but two hundred eighty-eight of the company. The remainder were found to have deserted at earlier periods. Due to an epidemic of infantile paraly- sis, the fall opening of camp the last year was delayed until the last week of Septem- ber, This last year of training in educa- tional tactics was one involving many changes in command and also many forms of social activity. It was December of l94l that our country became entangled in the second World War. Besides the venture- some lads who enlisted in Uncle Sam's fighting forces, there were quite a few differences in school life. Air-raid drills became a frequent part of the program and first-aid classes were formed in preparation for the coming emergency. Various changes in the coaching of our athletic teams were brought about. Mr. Heber T. Meyers was inducted as head football coach and Mr. Morrell C-rigg as his assistant. Although Mr. Irvin L. Keener had very ably led the basketball teams for several years, he turned over his position to Mr. Edward Y. Good of P.j.H.S. fame. Turning to the art of drama, the class pre- sented for its Senior class play a mystery melodrama, The Moonstone, which had a very successful run of three performances, having been excellently directed by Miss K. Arline Hartman and Miss Mildred Christ- man. The usual Senior class trip to Washing- ton, D. C., was conducted on june 3, 4, and 55 but due to the great increase in popula- tion in Washington, the annual trip of the Drill Teams and Band was canceled. How- ever, on a much smaller scale, a competitive meeting of several neighboring Drill Teams was held here in Pottstown. As the end of our term drew near, Class Night provided a thoroughly enjoyable eve- ning and we were all deeply moved by the Baccalaureate Services. Socially, the junior class honored us with a most delightful junior Prom and our Com- mencement Dance was a great success. Most enjoyable was our first year at the Alumni Dance, ending our final year at Pottstown Senior High School. Now that we have fulfilled our three years of activity, we look forward to our first Reunion Dinner and Alumni Dance in I947. We sincerely hope that every mem- ber of our class will be present. The first object to come in focus of our glasses is jacobs Aircraft Engine plant. There we see several men working in the shipping department and recognize them as Raymond Kohler, head shipping clerk, and Kenneth Moyer, Norman Stetler, john Bechtel, Charles Frech, and Nicholas Casper. Looking inside we see the General Manager - no other than Earl Keiser. His private secretary is jean Pelz. Richard Saylor, Gerald Swavely, and Dick Brunish are in the accounting department, while Betty Keck, Gladys Patrick, jennie Pengelly, and Dorothy Lightcap are stenographers. Working as filing clerks are Dorothy Dengler, Mae Kruppenbach, and Emily Yanocha. Morris Reynolds is the purchasing agentg Charles Hoffman is his assistant. Stenographers in the purchasing department are Marie Hipple, Clara jacob, and Nancy Kurtz. Eugene Astheimer, as personnel manager, is interviewing Anna Capaldi, Mary Capp, and Mildred Rotz, who are applying for jobs as inspectors, Frances Stutconis and Virginia Dettore, nurses at the plant, are checking their files concerning data of the work- men's health. Looking down the assembly line we see the following machinists: john Duke, Clifford Levengood, Paul Frey, Franklin Reese, and foreman john Bechtel. Next we circle the airfield and see several of the aviators who have just landed from a cross-country flight by an armada of gyroscopes. Among the aviators are Marian Hoffecker, William McCann, Peter Hish, Dorothy Pow- ick, Thomas Panfile, Frank Bellini, joseph Kendall, and Oliver Diffenderfer. Richard Moyer, Robert Wolcott, Warren Brown, and Robert Himes are ser- vicing the planes as David Hartline and Francis Llewellyn are gathering data from the flyers to be used in perfecting their latest inventions. Flying westward, we approach the Doehler Die Casting plant. The president is Herbert Phillips, his private secretary is Gladys Kline. Many members of the Class of l42 are employed in the offices of the company, Some of them are Evelyn Seyler, Kathryn Ludy, Veronica Panoc, and Dorothy Hall, clerks, Doris Scheidt and Walter Spaar, comptometer operators, Bar- bara Seasholtz, Mary Neafcy, and Eleanor Lawler, stenographers, and johan- na Copenhafer, receptionist. Working as draftsmen are Earl Case, Raymond Frederick, the Rivlin Twins, Norman Werner, and Christopher Sevast. The machinists, working under the direction of Bill Hart, are Edwin Bossert, Maurice Gauger, Alfred Wright, and john Ferranti. Bernard Boraten, Thomas Neafcy, and Robert Pomponio are diecasters. Engineers Harold Rickert, john Smith, Robert Griesemer, and john Van Riper are also employed here. As we circle above the plant for a last look we notice joe Czeiner and Charles Bechtel driving away in one of Doehler's trucks, which had been loaded by Delmar Albright, Russell Drumheller, and Robert Stoudt, under the direction of David Collins. Coming down the main street we see several beauty shops operated by Esther Brile, Lillian Williams, Dorothy Kovach, Kathleen jenkins, and Rose- mary Dilliplane, josephine Flickinger is getting a blonde rinse and Christine Martin is having her nails manicured by josephine Neiman. Proceeding down High Street we see a dress shop operated by june Trayer. Her dresses are designed exclusively by jean Stufflet. Two of her buyers are Pearl Miller and Theresa Forke. Behind the stenographer's desk is joyce Hunsberger. Career girls Betty Maier and Gladys Yocom are busy trying on dresses. The next sign to attract our attention is that of the Herbst drugstore, owned by josephine Herbst. Two customers are Don Waters and Nancy Sheeler who are buying vitamin pills from salesgirl Helen Stauffer. Bob Knauer is behind the counter, mixing sodas. Waitresses Mildred Longacre and Mary Psota are serving lunch to Theodore Bodolus, Ann jane Case, Art Peroni, Leatrice Geschwind, and Charles Klink. While we are looking in, Earl Strouse delivers some mail. Sam Skean and Anna Wabin are filling drug prescriptions. Next we see that the Strand Theatre is still operating, it is now under the management of Norman Leblang. The cashier is Helen Besherwor. The feature picture is starring Adeline Longaker and Gerald Russell. Between shows Louise Reifsneider sings, accompanied by Leanore Miller. We see that travel films have been photographed by Murdock Miller. They are an account of the travels of Frances Tisdale through Australia, described by Harold Lachman. The fashion movie includes models Elizabeth Rhoads, Phyllis Har- tenstine, Annette Friedman, and Bernice Dettrich, photographed by Eugene Orlando, and the film is narrated by Helenclare Barnett. The sports film tells of a New York Yankee baseball victory through the efforts of Andy Holoka. ln one of the close-ups of the crowd attending the game on Ladies' Day we see Beatrice Gilbert, Bernetta Moyer, and Helen Fenstermacher. Other celebrities in The Sportlight film are Michael Sis- ak, George Dozier, Lewis Mack, joyce Brown, joseph Powell, and Phillip Thees. Louise Beekley is the sports announcer. At the movie are the former Nancy Shelly, Lorraine Kirby, Dorothy Harp, and Dorothy Mauger, taking a holiday from their household duties. Flying over Charlotte Street, we notice a new store in the decorating business. Working there are john Yonkovitch, jean Weikel, Geneva Keller, and Royal Kohler. After we turn down King Street and approach City Hall, we find Edward Smith practicing law in his office, we recognize his stenogra- phers - Betty Gruff and Mary Giangiacomo. john Fleisch is the Burgess. We see police officers joseph Ross, Harry Boyer, and Kenneth Maxwell con- ferring with desk sergeant Paul Linton. Next we peer into the Bell Telephone office to find jean Radcliffe and Hazel Root in charge. Bernard Bauer is the office manager. The operators are Eleanor Rachild, Patricia Mauger, Betty Guardiani, Anna Mae Kalis, Helen Koval, Virginia Deloplaine, Irene Soltes, and Anna Bicer. Worlcing on the service trucks are Franklin Shaner, Alan Shaner, Donald Miller, and Edgar Deihm. As we fly up Penn Street we see firemen Morris Houck and Eugene G'Conner sitting in front of the firehouse across from the high school where Albert Cimino is the principal, Betty Stasin is the school secretary, and David Seavers heads the vocational school. Among the teachers in the various de- partments are lrvin Peiffer, chemistry, Thelma Huber, modern language, Rita Connell, commercial, Claire Painter and Elizabeth Varady, home economics, Gloria Colasanti, music instructor, and Alfred Panfile, athletic coach. The assembly guests, who will hold panel discussions, are Kathryn Klaus, Thelma Blair, Robert Raugh, Robert Fox, and Millie Keehn. Norman Klase is taking notes for his paper. Going out Charlotte Street to the Pottstown Hospital we find june Groff, Thelma Harner, and Marian Miller acting as secretaries. Thelma Keller, Eleanor Harley, and Lucetta Rutter are obtaining information for their welfare work. The doctors are julius Daniels, Nelson Chaplin, Edith Millard, and George johnson. They are assisted by Doris Rawn and Hettie Brenz who are now technicians. A newcomer to the medical staff is Eleanor Houston. The nurses are jane Weiser, Betty Neiman, Mary Ellen Eppeheimer, Anna Rae DeLaMont, Betty Fagley, Evelyn Kappenstine, Peggy LeBaron, Gloria Leveille, Irene Miller, Dorothy Yeagle, Helen Berriker, Shirley Horwitz, Marie Lerner, and Helen Thomas. Rafeal Calvario is the dietitian. As we are leaving, we see two medical missionaries who we recognize as the lrick twins. We hear news of a number of service men and women leaving at the railroad station and rush to see them. Edmund Hums, William Leinbach, Paul Reigner, james Sheetz, Edward Drounzeski, Paul Spencer, john Yergey, john Barna, john Hospadcr, Harry Weidensaul, Arthur Scheffler, Richard Wien, Dorothy Thompson, and Agnes Hasselhan are among those leaving to serve. Richard Gerard, the Secretary of the Navy, is being interviewed by Char- lotte Nagengast. We see them being photographed by Sallie Miller. Anxious to see who comprise the newspaper staffs we soar over the i'Mercury and see Benjamin LaPish, Robert Mauger, and Wayne Deegan setting up headlines. Ad takers Eleanor Dalling, Dorothy Strunk, and Cal- vin Hughes are busy working for advertising manager Norman Biehl. Gladys Stuart, William Will, and Mildred Fisher are editors of the various depart- ments, and Robert Miller handles the job-printing accounts. Geraldine Wade, Homer Sweisford, Eleanor Missimer, Ralph Dyer, and Dorothy Sparks are reporters. Bertha Arndt, Anna Koval, and Mae Nimmerichter are reading the latest issue. As they turn to the society page we can see, through our high-powered binoculars, a feature about that famous hostess - Hazel Weber. At the rear of the Mercury we find Lawrence Hobbs and john Mickletz discussing their newspaper-distribution problems. Approaching Sunnybrook, huge advertisements telling about Grant Rohrbach's dance band, which is playing that night, are visible. The coming bands are Kenny Hines' and Michael Pastelak's. Doris Newton, Martha Rebert, and Christine Richards are checking coats. On the stage we notice that the star attractions of Grant's band are: David Oxenford, playing the electric guitar, Frank Rosenberry, playing the drums, and Anastasio Guerrero, singing songs in Spanish. Charles Favinger, Cecelia Antonio, Lester Groff, Evelyn Butz, Kenneth Schaeffer, and jane Hamilton are among the dancers. joyce Herrlinger, Lois Crown, and john Schneck are serving cokes and hot dogs to Luther Weaver, Gloria Deleonardis, Earl Weikel, Raymond Stichter, and jane Royer. With the coming of dusk we decide to bring our tour of Pottstown to an end and we fly off with pleasant memories of our former classmates. NATIO NAI..
