There was visible tension in the air as announcer Holly Crews asked for everyone's attention, and the homecoming festivities began. Tobey Pearson and Tyson Bennett walked the nominee's Corvette around the track in the midst of flashing cameras and a thundering applause. As the band played Say You, Say Me and the drill team performed a special pom pon routine, Kelly Cassell and Teresa Wheeler took their places in the formation carrying the crown and roses. Finally the minute arrived. The three nomin- ees and their escorts walked nervously onto the field. A moment of silence was asked, and thoughts of anticipation were pushed back as the invocation was said. The envelope was asked for and ripped open. Her voice trembling with excitement, Holly read, The Homecoming Queen for the 1987-88 school year is . . . Cameras were readied and a hush fell as breaths were held. No one wanted to miss those two vital next words . . . Nora Carettini. The crown was presented, and with shaky hands Joel Thompson carefully placed it on Nora's head. Roses were given to all three girls, and the crowning was over. Nora waved to the crowd and gave a tearful smile, and the queen and her court were led to their seats where she would reign over her knights as they faced battles on the football field. Homecoming x.
