Cardinal Pottsboro ISD PD. Box 555 Pottsboro, TX 75076 Vol. XXI .ff-ai.. sf- he-I.-. normal lnor' mall adj. 1. conforming to or constituting an accepted standard, model, or pattern, usualg standardg typical 2. having or demonstrating average intellectual or emotional development By Teresa Wheeler Why can we claim to be not normal? Because in no way has this been a normal year. Pottsboro has always had the reputation of being a tough competitor athletically and scholastically, but this year Cardinals of all ages towered above past expectations and standards and several times strayed very far from the norm. This year alone there were three foreign exchange students. Gioconda Darcia came from Costa Rica. Marek Harloff visited us from Hamburg, West Germany. And Carlos Ernanny represented Rio De Janiero, Brazil. Students in all grades involved scored high on TEAMS tests, having comparatively high percentiles of mastery. There were also new teachers in every building and new coaches on the field. The football and baseball teams advanced deep into the play-offs. And both the boy's and girl's basketball teams competed at the bi-district level. The OAP and seven people went to and placed at state in individual sports and academic events. There were approximately 40 people in the marching band, the largest number of members ever. The drill team had to cut routines to fit their seven-member line, but they pulled out some pretty impressive ones despite the fact. The yearbook staff only had two returning members. And out of nine staffers, there was only one male: Stacy. Top: Jill Garner and Mary Wood, homecoming queen runners-up, ride down Hwy. 120 in the annual Christmas parade. Bottom: Players, coaches, and fans react to winning another play-off trophy. The Cardinals advanced to regional competition where they fell to Lorena 26-42. N Page Sponsored by lst NATIONAL BANK OF POTTSBORO Pottsboro got a new Mitchell's supermarket and a new Dairy Queen, and moved the city limit to the front gate of Simmons Shores. As the size of Pottsboro town grew, the population of Pottsboro ISD grew. Willow Springs campus remained open for three very large kindergarten classes. Each campus gained a portable building to be able to accommodate such a large number of students. And when the results of the semi-annual district realigning came in, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. PHS had remained in AA classification by a small handful. Right: Elementary students from all grades get together to do jumping jacks for the P.E. show. Below: Mark Guilloud ileftj and Johnny Wood lrightj decided to be really weird and come to school dressed as nerds . Below Right: Charles Baker fplungingl and Joe Hasten perform a skit for Mrs. Ellis's seventh period theatre arts class. The 1988 graduating class was also the first class to raduate under House Bill 72 policies. They were also the first lass to vote not to have a graduation speaker then repeal their ecision later and invite a speaker to their afternoon raduation. They were also the first class to have the ppiortunity to graduate under the advanced program of :u ies. In addition this freshman class is the last class to be exempt from writing an essay on the exit level TEAMS test. And we went to school on a Saturday to make up for a day missed to a snow storm. This was also the first time the Middle School and High School both graduated in the Grayson County College auditorium on the same day. Eighth grade graduated at 10:00 in the morning, and the seniors graduated at 2:00 that afternoon. ielow Left: Mandy and Lorna Bates performed twirling routines for the high school pep rallies. Below Right: The Edge, a rock group 'ith a drug message, stopped at Pottsboro to perform a mini-concert during school hours and a full concert the next night at thecommunity enter. One popular one with the seniors, especially on Senior Spirit Day, was boxer shorts over long johns. People bought jeans with holes already in them and wore different colored shoes on each foot. Tails were done away with and longer bangs emerged on the guys. Girls began showing up in mini-skirts, and the peace emblem and denim jackets were back. Tobey Pearson and Tyson Bennett walked the nominee's Corvette around the track in the midst of flashing cameras and a thundering applause. As the band played Say You, Say Me and the drill team performed a special pom pon routine, Kelly Cassell and Teresa Wheeler took their places in the formation carrying the crown and roses. Finally the minute arrived. The three nomin- ees and their escorts walked nervously onto the field. A moment of silence was asked, and thoughts of anticipation were pushed back as the invocation was said. The envelope was asked for and ripped open. Her voice trembling with excitement, Holly read, The Homecoming Queen for the 1987-88 school year is . . . Cameras were readied and a hush fell as breaths were held. No one wanted to miss those two vital next words . . . Nora Carettini. The crown was presented, and with shaky hands Joel Thompson carefully placed it on Nora's head. Roses were given to all three girls, and the crowning was over. Nora waved to the crowd and gave a tearful smile, and the queen and her court were led to their seats where she would reign over her knights as they faced battles on the football field. Homecoming x. From eight o'clock in the morning into the heat of the afternoon the band learned to march and prepared new shows. They then worked on honing their newly learned routines into precision works in the snowstorms of winter. At the first football game, the band proudly performed in new uniforms, and a new assistant band director, Mr. Greg Davis, was welcomed with his new ideas and extra help. Davis was previously an instructor in Sherman for six years. He has earned both his bachelors and masters degrees from NTSU. Under the direction of veteran Bill Yowell and drum major Tommy Meadows, the Cardinal Marching Band sported the largest field of musicians in the history of the band. In addition to marching, the band performed a spring stage concert and 12 members played with the North Texas Honor Band in Denton. As the school year wound to a close, band members were active in reorganizing a flag corps for the fall season. Below: All of the hard work and dedication paid off. The band gained a reputation of continued success as each performance was stepped out perfectly. 49 Cheerleaders The 1987-88 cheerleaders worked hard to be the best both in competition and in front of the crowds. Working together, the two squads painted spirit signs for the halls and run-throughs for the teams, prepared pep rallies, and encouraged lots of crowd enthusiasm. Overall the PHS cheerleaders had a success- ful year, as did the teams for which they cheered. Mrs. Ronda Norman served as sponsor. I'm 40 years old and I've had 10 great years coaching football at Pottsborof' said Ray. It's a career and a family move, it's time to make a change. This move has been in the back of my mind for two or three years, I've always had a desire to get into administration. Ray compiled a 75-32-5 record during his 10-year tenure winning five district titles and losing three times in the playoffs to eventual state champions. Coaching the baseball team for seven years, Ray had a 142-38 record winning six straight district championships and going to the state tournament in Austin three consecutive years C1980-829. I'm very sincere in this move being a two-fold thing. I want to spend more time with my family, he added. If I've got a disappointment, it's we didn't win a state championship. We were close so often. That disappointment passes quickly when you think of all the success we've had here, he continued. You like to think you're going out on top and that's the way I feel, added Ray. Ray graduated from Denison High School in 1967 and attended North Texas State University. His entire coaching career has been at Pottsboro. I would like to thank all the people in the area who have been supportive of our program. I'm very proud of what the overall athletic program accomplished during my stint as athletic director. We won over 30 varsity district championships in the last 10 years. I want to thank my wife, Jamie, too. She's probably the best coaching wife you could have. Superintendent Charley Chambless said it was tough saying goodbye to Ray as a coach, but added, he'll be just as good an administrator. Ronny did a tremendous job as a coach and athletic director. He didn't just push just one sport. He'd push tennis like football and it'll be hard to find someone else like that. I had to make this same decision some time ago and it's one all coaches have to make. You either stay with it all your life, or you get out while youive still got time to do something else. In addition to his other honors, Ray was named coach of the year by his district peers on four occasions in football. They survived it all. Those first doubtful moments when the alphabet was as confusing as hieroglyphics. Carefully plotting out the graph of a hyperbole. Learning that lines don't curve. Figuring out why the baby bunny was grey when both his parents were white. Learning how to form cursive letters. And trying to find out exactly what errors were. There were many hard times and many memorable ones. New teachers, new rules, new friends. Always there were changes. But the class of 1988 kept in touch and let the differences lie where they fell. As the end drew near, the exuberant it's almost over began to fade to teary and wondering do we really have to say goodbye?.', The closeness of the class had formed bonds that were going to be hard to break. Best friends were having to leave. Newly found companions had to say goodbye. There were college and jobs to think about now. Unrealized responsibilities seemed to surface from nowhere. The class of 1988 had finally grown up. The security blanket of knowing those four walls would always be there and knowing there would always be someone to talk to was slowly unraveling. The sureness of knowing what tomorrow was going to be wasn't there, and 58 teenagers had to step out the doors into the dark mystery of an adult world. But even after the last lockers were cleaned out and the lights of the high school were dimmed, there was a feeling of knowing that everything would be all right. Old classmates will see each other in the streets and not help but smile. That tie that binds will always be there. Ten years will pass, faces will change before some of them see each other again. But the hearts will always know that on that beautiful day years ago when 58 scared and crying young adults stepped across the threshhold, it wasn't the last goodbye, it was just the first farewell. Learning, Sharing - And it was interesting. The first goal of both was to be able to overcome if 2 the language barrier. Both toted their dictionaries along with them everywhere they went, but it was a little easier for Marek. He had a command of enough conversational English to communicate fairly well. Carlos's first thought when he realized no one here spoke Portuguese was I'm in a big trouble! He only knew yes and uno. By the time they left, both of them were writing essays in Mrs. Garvin's English I class and in Mrs. Cassell's English III, and Marek was winning Best Actor awards for his role in the state-winning UIL one act play 'tlnterviewfl Cln Germany, the teenagers don't receive much recognition for their accomplishments. This made Marek's awards even more important to him, especially, when his parents visited during Spring Break and got to see him win Best Actor in district OAP competition.J Both of the boys admitted that after speaking English for so long, they forgot some of their own language when speaking on the phone to their relatives and friends back home. Marek said, When I first came I had to translate from German to English. Now I have to translate from English to German. Carlos didn't think this would be a problem once they got home though. Carlos left Pottsboro June 12th to visit his uncle in Miami, Florida. He then went to New York to meet some friends from Brazil. He returned home July 24th. Marek applied for and received a visa extension so he could stay a little longer. Over the summer he learned to water ski and knee board, and he Earned his Texas driver's license. He flew home to Germany July 15t . Not only was America a growing and learning experience for Marek and Carlos, they helped us see how different each of us are and taught us to appreciate what we have in America. We grew very close to them through both of their stays here and will miss them. But our love for them and memories of them will stay with us forever. Marek finally finds time to take a rest when the state meet is over and the hustle and bustle of doing a production has ended. Robin Barrett, Kelly Cassell and others react to the announcement that Marek had earned Best Actor credits at regionals. 122 Growing, Laughing America. lt's something that we will take for granted. But for two foreign exchange students, it was something to learn, From the time Marek Harloff of Hamburg, West Germany arrived on August 29, 1987 and Carlos Ernanny of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil arrived on January 17, 1988 until they left, they never stopped learning new things and leaving small tidbits of themselves and their cultures everywhere they went. There were two main differences noticed by both boys. The biggest was in the educational systems. In Germany the classes are taught on a higher level and students cannot choose electives until after the tenth grade. There are no electives in the Brazillian school system. The mandatory subjects in Brazil are also much stiffer than the ones in America. They include Portuguese, English, French, chemistry, math, biology, physics, geography, philosophy, and history. They also thought Americans were more patriotic than their compatriots. Both of the seventeen year olds went from living in very large cities to a city with a population of only 895. Carlos liked the idea simply for the fact it was in Texas, but he had wanted to go to California before he got to know the people. He simply said, I loved it here. Marek didn't find out how big Pottsboro was until he saw it but didn't mind since he'd been living in a bigger city all of his life and thought it could be interesting to live in a smaller town for some time. --e 2X?Z'f?: ' ' ' , ml 8 Qi .4 ,Q ...Q . .1..-ls..-a..w..,,..,,.,. You've seen it all from funny faces to heart-moving momentsg everything that helped make this year not normal. We started noticing at the beginning of the year that this one was headed down a path of its own. It was plowing its way through untouched territory including a few ways that led to Austin and a few that led to seeming insanity. The yearbook staff, it appears, chose to follow the latter. We worked hard to show every way possible that this wasn't a normal year, including binding this book backwards. That's why you're reading the last page of the book. When you're finished reading this editor's note, just close the book, turn it over, and open it at the corner where the arrow is. Then you'll be in the right place. .
