First Grade A unit on playground safety started off the lst grade for the six and seven year olds. The lst graders learned many skills throughout the year and were involved in various activities such as patriotism, a self-concept study, a Texas unit, and growing plants. A cooking unit was also included in the lst grade agenda. These activities were greatly enjoyed by the students and will help prepare them for future goals. A. X Kindergarten Nervousness and excitement filled the air as the new kindergartners took their seats on the first day of school. Although nervous and excited, meeting and making new friends was not a difficult task. The new state laws which mandated essential elements affected kindergarten along with the other grades. These elements called for more study time and less play time. learned to During study time they print and recite the alphabet and numerals, as well as to express themselves orally. In addition to these skills their coloring and listening became much improved. Special activities the kindergarten was involved in the first semester in- cluded the carving of jack-o-lanterns in October, a Thanksgiving singing pro- gram portraying the children as Pilgrims and Indians, and the exchang- ing of gifts in December along with the traditional Christmas party. The second semester brought on ex- citing events such as the traditional Valentine's party, a trip to the livestock show, an easter egg hunt in April, and the annual Little Cardinal Relays.
