Dragons End Cards' l988 Playoff l-lopes The Cards' state championship hopes died Nov. l2 in a bi-district clash against the SouthLake-Carroll Dragons at Birdville Stadium in Richland. Pottsboro entered the contest ranked fifth in state but was stunned 28-25 by the low-riding Dragons. Although the offense mounted 25 points and 270 total yards, the Big-Red Machine definitely didn't play it's best game of the season as it had five turnovers, three interceptions and two lost fumbles. The Dragons' defense did a super job against the Cards' offense as they shut down lohnson, Texoma's leading rusher, to l8 yards on l3 carries and picked off three leff White passes. Pottsboro cut the lead to 28-25 with 5:42 left in the game but 5outhLake got the ball and started a lengthy drive that finally stalled at the Pottsboro 40 yard line. The Cards' got the ball at their own seven with 52 seconds left. After two short completions and a guarter- back sack, Pottsboro had to go for the long bomb with 7 seconds left. The ball was intercepted and the game ended with a bunch of astonished players and fans. Although the season ended on a sour note, overall the Big Red Machine had a great season and made marks in the history book that can't be erased. 1Vs Continue Winning Streak The 1982-83 Cardinal 1.V. kept up their winning tradition by posting a 9-1 mark. Their only blemish was a emotional 6-O loss to Farmersville. A very excit- ing non-district contest was won by the Cardinals in a 23-16 late game victory over Pilot Point. Some ot these players will be counted on at the varsity level next year and others will continue their stay with the 1 .V.
