46 Receive Diplomas As graduation kept rolling closer and closer, many seniors were found looking forward with nervousness, high hopes, as well as thinking back with fond memories of their first days of school and their years of growing up. May 25th finally arrived and 46 seniors were lined up in the lobby of Grayson County College Auditorum ready to graduate. They were ushered into the building by Marty Ulmer, lennifer Short, Wes Kirby, and Camey Wright. Music was provided by Sandy Brown and Grant Teaff was the speaker for the occasion. Valedicto- rian Lori Barnett and Salutatorian Laurie Hofmann both received cash awards from the PTO. The PTO scholar- ship went to Greg Wright. Sherry Ballard was also pre- sented with the Guilloud Work Fellowship Award. A. Todd Williams awaits his turn to file in prior to graduation. B, Sherry Ballard recieves her diploma from Mr. Prindle. Headlines lnfluence l982-88 Crime was a major American concern again in l982- 83. Capitol punishment and the Hinckley decision sparked new controversy in crime and enforcement of laws. The Tylenol incident brought a new wave of con- sumer awareness into the tampering of consumer goods. Advancements in technology brought new uses for the laser in medical areas. In the medical field, Barney Clark became the first recipient of an artificial heart, only to die several months later. Concerned economists found hope in economic re- covery as jobs became available in the later parts of the year. ' Americans debated such topics as economy as well as professional sports, as the National Football League went on strike for better working conditions and wages. The Space Shuttle Challenger joined NASA's space fleet with its maiden voyage. ln contrast those space ships that invade the television and movie screens brought an almost mystical creature known as E.T., the Extra Terristrial. E.T. touched the hearts of Americans and went on to surpass the box office sales of all time best seller STAR WARS. However, the second STAR WARS sequel, RETURN OF THE lEDl, hit the theatres during the last week of May and astounded the world with a record S41 million in sales in only five days. On the social side of news, Queen Elizabeth ll and Prince Philip visited America during the early spring visiting with the Reagans. ln television, MASH ended an era of War time situa' tion comedies. During the summer of l982 Alexander Haig resignec in Washington. George Shultz, a career politician, wa: selected to replace the outgoing secretary of state. November brought midzterm elections with the Democrats winning 26 seats in the House and holding their own in the Senate in one election called ureferen dum on Reagonomicas . In addition the Democrats anc Republicans were to reach agreement on a bi-partesiar Social Security bail out plan. Controversy remained ir 1983 over the appointment of arms control chief Alde man and mismanagement in the rnvironmental protec tion agency. Another national controversy was the five cent gaso line tax. This controversy brought gun fire attack or those truckers who failed to join in the national strike Upon the death of Soviet leader Leonaid Brezshnev Yuri Andropov was made leader, making only the fourtl change in the top position. The ex-KGB chief proved tc be tough at the bargaining tables as the debate o missles and defense continues. President Reagan blasted Soviet defense policies anc suggested America move to a new space age defense using lasers. ln other action, Poland banned solidarity The Italians announced that there were remote con ,nections between the Pope's assassination attempt anc the KGB. After Pope lohn Paul ll recovered, he contin ued on his crusade of peace, visiting Britian and Argen tina following the Faulklands War. He visited war strick en Central America and called for peace and good will
