Varsity Completes Season With a Finishing with a 7-2-1 record and a 5-2 district record the Varsity Cardinal football team ended the year with the third best season in Pottsboro's history. Although the team was predominantly young, the seniors played a very important role on and off the field. Runningbacks Bobby Flanagan and Troy Hasten both had good games in the season and both were also hampered by injury. Receivers John Lewis and Mark Price, along with quarterback Dwayne Williams, gave the Cardinals a potent passing game and also both played in the defensive secondary. Linemen Roy Wagner and Bob Miller gave Williams time to pass and gave runners places to run. Linebacker Dwight Travis and cornerback Casey Perkins helped the Cardinals on defense as both were among the leaders in tackles. A. A lot of work was contributed by manager Todd Williams, JV team member Dewey Griffith, and injured varsity player Scott Sherrard. B. Barney Frazier strives for a winning touchdown, C, Bobby Flanagan displays his agility and skill as a receiver against a Howe opponent. D. Mark Price makes a spectacular jumping catch. E. Varsity Spirit Remains High Pottsboro Varsity Cardinals outscored opponents 216-96, getting off to a great start with a 41-7 rout of Aubrey. The season came to a climatic end with an emotional 35-8 win over Van Alstyne. Dwayne Williams had 1049 yards and 7 touchdowns passing on the year as quarterback. Receiving, Mark Price and John Lewis had 283 yards and 239 yards respectively for the year. Barney Frazier had 182 yards in 18 catches and Keith Bates had 12 receptions for 121 yards. Jamie Johnson led in rushing for the year having 130 carries for 703 yards. Bobby Flanagan had 93 carries for 394 yards before being injured in the Callisburg gameg Frazier had 275 yards on 45 carries, and Troy Hasten had 50 carries for 229 yards for the season. On defense Dwight Travis led on tackles with 61 tackles and 42 assistsg Frazier had 61 tackles and 27 assistsg and Craig Hamilton had 46 tackles and 17 assists.
