Courier Receives All-State Rating The Cardinal Courier embarked on a new year with three Juniors and twelve Seniors, five of whom were returning staffers. A new year always brings new faces to the newspaper, but in 1980-81, one of those new faces was a new journalism teacher and Courier sponsor, Mrs. Felecia Garvin. The change in leadership led to many other changes for the Courier. The newspaper was changed from a weekly to a bi-weekly publication. Scheduling for the printing processes had to undergo a complete facelift. Sharing the leadership with co- editors Debbie Ritchie, Pam Shelby, and Ailsa Sublett were sports editor, Mike Lewis and Carla McGehee, managing editor. Under Mrs. Garvin's direction, the publication dropped some of its frivolous space-fillers such as horoscopes and puzzles and added more imformative news stories and a movie review column. Two individual stories, an editorial and a review, earned Cream of the Crop ratings at the Texas High School Press Association Convention in Denton. The Courier publication and the Looking Glass , a literary magazine published annually by the newspaper staff also received state THSPA awards. In the tradition established in its 13 years of publication, the Courier not only sought to change the environment in which it exists, but also to learn from and teach others through the changes in our world. A. Working on the newspaper is tiring work. Mark Price takes a quick nap before printing the Courier. B. Journalist Renee Prindle, demonstrates that a reporter never reveals her sources. C. Debbie Edwards and Casey Perkins prepare the Cardinal press for another late night run. D. Courier staff members attended a District 11 Texas Press women's meeting in Van Alstyne. Mary Ann Stephenson, former political press secretary, was guest speaker. Attending the meeting were Ailsa Sublett, Renee Prindle, Mrs. Garvin, Pat Welch, District 11 President, Pam Shelby, and Cheryl Wright. 44 5 .... 8 V 1 . f V . ...,,M,,,,..........,.,...... 1.-.------.1 -ja-'ha' leg...-f . Varsity Cheerleaders Perform Skits Each Week Contrary to popular belief, cheerleaders' work begins long before the first football game. In preparation for football season, the Varsity Cheerleading squad attended a one week training camp at Austin College. While at camp they learned dance routines, cheers, skits, chants, and fund raising ideas which were put to use throughout the year. The squad received various awards for spirit and cheering ability. Each week during football season, the cheerleaders spent many after school hours preparing for the pep- rally. Every Friday a special skit was performed to highlight the upcoming game. In order to raise additional money, the cheerleaders sponsored the annual mum sale for the homecoming game. Keeping school spirit alive is not an easy task but the PHS Varsity Cheerleading squad accomplished this goal. A. Cheerleaders build a stunt to fire up. B.
