Fifth Time Baseball Takes District Title Defending its 1980 quarter final championship, this year's Cardinal baseball team won its fifth consecutive district championship. Coached by Ron- nie Ray and Gary Clements, the Car- dinals started the year without many returning starters, including ace pitcher Dwayne Williams, because of the length of the basketball season. Before district play the Cardinals posted an 11-5 record and won the Pott- sboro tournament, beating Whitewright in the final, 11-1. District play opened on a sour note as the Cardinals lost 1-0 to Whitewright. After that the Cardinals turned it around as they won their remaining district games to become champs. Williams pitched seven of the eight district games, having three shut-outs and an ERA of .350. Williams went 10-3 on the season with a .78 ERA. Keith Bates pitched one district game giving up only three hits and one earned run. Bates was 4-1 on the season with a 1.90 ERA. Jamie Johnson went 2-2 on the season and John Lewis had a 1-0 record. Tom Ceci led the Cards at the plate with a .500 District Batting Average, and 27 RBI's on the season. Lewis, the only senior on this year's team averaged .478 in District and had 17 RBI's. Cards Fall To Wascom For the second consecutive year, the Waskom Wildcats eliminated the Pottsboro Cardinals from the Class AA state baseball tournament. ln l980, the Wildcats won by a 11-0 breeze. However, this year the Card's mounted a furious late-inning rally, only to come up two runs shy, falling 9-7 at Disch-Falk Field in Austin, June 15. Similar to last year's match, Waskom did most of its scoring in one inning, breaking its own AA single-inning record with seven runs in the third. The Card's had seven errors compared to six in 1980. Coach Ray had wanted to avoid getting behind early, but that's exactly what happened as the 'Cats erupted for seven runs in the third, sending 11 men to the plate. From there things went downhill for the Card's with three errors resulting in numerous runs. Pottsboro cut the count to 7-2 in the fourth without benefit of a hit as walks to Lewis, Tom Ceci, Dwayne Williams and Jeff White along with an RBI ground ball by Keith Rice produced a pair of runs. The Cats upped their lead to 9-2 in the top of the fifth. Pottsboro mounted a comeback attempt in the bottom of the fifth as they pushed across four runs. After Lewis walked, Ceci and Williams delivered sharp RBIhsingles up the middle, with Williams scoring on a wild pitc . The Card's continued to apply the pressure in the sixth, closing the gap to 9-7 as Jamie Johnson's stolen base ac- counted for another run. After Williams struck out in the top of the seventh, the 'Cats pitcher retired the Card's in order on a strikeout and two ground balls to end the game. The Card's finished the season, 20-7. It was a year of rematches for the Card's. They captured the regional title for the second straight year by defeating the Boyd Yellow Jackets, 12-6. A.
