J.V. Boys Win District The 1980-81 Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Team won the District Championship with a 6-1 District mark. The Cardinals season record was 16-5 and the team played in two tournaments. They placed first in the Pottsboro tournament and second in the Van Alstyne tourney. is Coach Bill Crenshaw's team was helped 2 'lf tremendously by Barney Frazier and Eddie Steward. Frazier was ineligible for Varsity because of the UIL transfer rule. Frazier led the Cards with a 20.2 points per game average in district and a 17.3 average for the season. Cards Defeated In Bi-District Play District action got underway as the Cardinals beat Tom Bean Tomcats, 52-30. Pottsboro met Howe midway through the first round for the most exciting game of the season. The final score was Pottsboro 53, Howe, 52. Whitewright was the only other team that gave PHS any trouble but the Card's won, 44-41. The second round of play opened on Jan. 30, against the Tomcats - this time the score was 50-35. On Feb. 10 the Pottsboro gym was packed as the Cardinals took on Howe again. Both sides were tense as only six points were scored in the first quarter. The final score was 41-35 and Pottsboro seemed assured of the district title. The Cards beat Van Alstyne and Whitewright and set up the final game with Lindsay. Pottsboro clinched the district Championship on Feb. 26 defeating Lindsay, 44-36. After district play the Cardinals played three games with highly ranked 1-A teams. The local team lost all three games. March 19 the Cardinals played Bi-District in Denton against Archer City, the number two ranked team in the state during most of the season. The Cardinals led the first quarter and only trailed by five entering the fourth quarter, but they were outscored by 12 points in the final quarter to end the season with 37-54 loss to Archer City.
