This year's student council members are sixth, sev- enth, and eighth graders: Bottom Row, Angie Anderson, Suzette Tignor, Scott Laney, Melanie Rhodes. Through the years the student council in Junior High has worked and been a strong foundation in school and community pro jects They have held bike a thons painted playground equipment and held a booth at the annual PTO carnival The money they have raised is contributed to the Heart Fund. This year, they participated in the Denison Christmas parade, as shown above, vvinning first place in the youth divi- sion. Their hard work and sense of civic duty has made the Junior High student council the pride of the Pottsboro Inde- pendent School District. I 19 A Varsity Squad Member Must Have Spirit, Diligence, and Perseverance Dedication could be used as a key word to describe the 1979-80 Varsity Cheerlead- ers. Cheering, promoting school spirit, and motivating team support are required of the squad. The squad cheers at Varsity football and basketball games, and pep rallies. Hard work and long hours are put in by each girl to paint signs, make run-throughs and sell ribbons. Many hours are spent at P.H.S. decorating the halls and field house, prac- ticing, surprising the football team, and keeping everyone fired up! This year the girls tossed complimentary footballs sponsored by State National Bank of Denison to the audience. A. Captain Cheri Price, Co-Captain Kaye Hamilton, Robin Short, Kelly Fox, Kelly Fratto, and Janet Butler make up the Varsity Cheerlead- ers. They worked hard all year painting run-throughs and signs throughout the football season, and did various cheers and stunts to cheer the JV's on to a winning season, and attended cheerleader workshop. They cheered for football and basketball. Bruce has been a captain of the football team for two years and a Ietterman for three. The 1979 Pottsboro Cardinal Football season began with the Cardinals being picked to finish dead last in District 14 A They returned 22 starters but they came from a 2 8 team The season began slow as the Big Red picked up only one win in its first four games Then the team began to pick up steam and rolled over its next five opponents before losing in their final game against Pilot Point which was for the district title. Many goals were attained in 79. The Cardinals set a new school record for team interceptions with 25 while Stacy Little set an individual record with 8. Eight members of the team received post-sea- son all-district honors including the entire offensive line. Among the nine offensive selections, three were for first team: Guard, Randy Glascockg Halfback, Jack Gainesg and Quarterback, Leslie Love. Among the six defensive selections were first team Line- backer Kyle Flesher, and Noseguard Richard Brown. Jack Gaines and Stacy Little head into the dressing room for a halt-time talk. The varsity boys' basketball team tin- ished the season with an 18-8 record, the best record for varsity boys in years. Coach Don Hudson, who is in his sec- ond year as Boys' Head Basketball Coach, described the team as an out- standing, hard-working group that has improved tremendously over the last two years. The Cardinals played in three tourna- ments this year placing third in two ot them and winning the championship in the S818 tournament. Mark Price, the Car- dinals' leading scorer, and Leslie Love received all-tournament honors. With six Seniors leaving, next year's team will have to rely on younger players from a strong 19-2, J.V. team.
