H. AUSTIN PECK-HFRESHMAN PRESIDENT When college -opened in September 1968, Potsdam had a new president. For weeks students asked each other, Have you seen him? or, What is he like? Freshmen were the first to meet their new president. During summer orientation, Dr. and Mrs. Peck entertained members of the entering class at picnics held at their home. In response to these meetings 700 freshmen marched on the president's resi- dence in September, greeted the Peck family and sang the Alma Mater. Student Government officers also had close contact with Dr. Peck. Instead of the reg- ular office type meetings, student leaders were invited to an informal dinner at the Peck home. Although these events were meaningful they fail to really describe the spirit Dr. Peck generated among students. The feeling that someone cared and was listening, and even went out of his way to listen, left students with an immediate pride in their freshman President. As a Resident Assistant I also saw the student staff of the college return to their dormitories, after meeting Dr. Peck, with a feeling that the man was sincere in his desire to work with and be a part of the student body. As President of Student Government Association I knew then that there would be no mistrust or credibility gap between Potsdam students and their President as long as this kind of rapport and mutual respect, developed by Dr. Peck, were maintained.
