english department P: row 1: e. alfonso, m. masterson, e. kristiansen, r. haver, s. angus, g. brundage. row 2: r. merchant, e. alfonsin, r. mohl, g. carey, w. cullen, a. backman, d. zoss, c. rothrauff. dr. kelsie b. harder the english department includes the fields of literature, linguistics, speech, drama, and mass communications. facili- ties include a speech laboratory, speech therapy rooms, group dynamics class- room, and dramatics center. the department of english is sponsoring a Writing workshop at star lake, june 5- 30. the workshop will be directed by dr. krishna vaid. the participants include: archibald mac leish, anais nin, paul engle, james dicky, and richard poilirier. the department hopes that this will be- come an annual feature. the english department prize is awarded annually to a senior who has demonstrated excellence in english. dr. kelsie b. harder was appointed chairman of the english department in 1964. he came to potsdam from youngs- town university Where he had taught since 1954. previously, he taught at the university of florida. 23

7 f J J-4,1 ,, ,. foreign language department there are six languages taught in potsdamls foreign lan- guage department. they include french, spanish, latin, ger- man, italian, and greek. the two majors that can be obtained are french and spanish. in these majors the students take courses in composition, in reading, in phonetics, and in na- tive language experience which is better known as, Hjunior year abroadf' the foreign language major in this program lives either in france or spain While studying the native lan- guage. dr. miguel a. prado became a member of the faculty in 1964. dr. prado is a member of several professional societies: a.a.t.f., a.a.t.s.p., m.l.a., and t.a.a.l.s. he is also a member of phi beta kappa and phi delta kappa. his Work has appeared in foreign language publications. dr. miguel a. prado Semedf 51 lelnlflll. c. purccll, m. bcrlcrzmd h fomllry Smndi . . Q ei . --x chairman psychology department the facilities of the psychology depart- ment are expanding with the construction of a new humanities and laboratory building. this building will house major instructional facilities such as animal and physiological labs, a child study center, workshops, and aquatic laboratories which our students will use in the near future. major experimental work will be done in this building. experimental teaching procedures are now being used. liberal arts and psychol- ogy of today demands experimental and laboratory procedures and experiences. the psychology club is now in the process of expansion. many students act as assistants to the department. the psychology department award is ollered annually to a senior psychology major who has demonstrated excellence in his held. mr. harry kristiansen became a mem- ber of the potsdam faculty in 1949. he is a member of the american psychology as- sociation, the new york state psychology association, the american association for the advancement of science and the na- tional council of family relations.
