the mathematics department olliers certification in the elementary. early secondary and secondary curricu- lums. a major in these curriculums requires sixty-six credit hours of math. students can choose electives from advanced courses in theory, logic, algebra, ge- ometry, calculus and others. in the course of the year the math department spon- sors guest speakers who relate the practical application of math with theory or who show the derivation of a theory. Special facilities include a computer laboratory and a statistical laboratory. scholarships available to math majors are the clark- son memorial award for highest academic average and the frances leitzell scholarship for the best elementary education student teacher. dr. jerre f. kilroy has taught math at potsdam since 1960. he taught math at hudson valley technical insti- tute before coming to potsdam. c. health and physical education department the purpose of the health and physical education department is to develop and maintain student physical fitness and to further the development of fundamental skills, knowledges and apprecia- tions of physical education. skill in individual and team activities is emphasized. sophomores are permitted to elect physical edu- cation activities. dr. sam j. molnar, chairman of the department of health and physical education, came to Potsdam in 1947. he has now completed his twentieth year as director of Potsdamls intercol- legiate athletic program. dr. mol- nar previously coached both bas- ketball and baseball at potsdam. 21
