STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION Whereas we, the students of State University Teachers College, Potsdam, of the State of New York, desire to share individually and collectively a responsibility for the conduct of our college life and thus promote habits of loyalty and self-discipline, we do hereby organize ourselves into an association. And so with this Preamble, the Constitution of S.C.A. came into being. Student Government is a well known organization on campus. It bears a striking resemblance to that of the Congress of our country. The judicial branch might be said to consist of Women's and Men's Student Councils which aid in regulating student activities. All students of Potsdam State are members and have a voice in their government by way of membership on standing committees and attendance at meetings. S.C.A. strives to fulfill its purposes: . . . to bring about such a degree of cooperation between the students, and the acceptance of responsibility of the stu- dents, and their organizations, as will maintain and uphold the highest standards of college life, and support impartially and unfailingly the provisions made by Student Government Association. To meet the student need for a coffee hreak during test week, evening study hours were set up in the Union dining hall and free coffee was provided. College Union Board also adds to the social life on campus hy spon- soring annual Halloween and Christmas parties. In cooperation with Clarkson College, jam sessions are held every Friday afternoon, alternat- ing between Lewis House and the College Union. To foster interest in current news topics, the Board sponsors faculty led discussions. A new atmosphere pervades the Union Snack Bar since its redecoration includ- ing the addition of sketches based on college life. Dancing in the snack bar is also encouraged. Continuing its interest and participation in the activities of the Asso- ciation of College Unions, the Board sends delegates to each annual conference. This year's exchange of ideas was held at Cornell from which the delegates returned with ideas to further enrich Union activities. J.. ASSEMBLY CCNCERT COMMITTEE Consisting of five members from each class, Assembly Concert Com- mittee is guided by faculty advisors, Mr. Harry Phillips and Miss Helen King. The committee plans school assemblies and concerts a year previous to the proposed performances. Their responsibilities include making ar- rangements for the performers regarding props, over-night accommoda- tions, stage hands, and many miscellaneous details that have to be Seated: A. Le Baron, B. Segman, J. Selleck, Y. Ornt, C. Rylance, R. Joyce, H. King, E. Sing. Standing: R. Thomas, D. Holtz, checked and rechecked before the performers arrive. This year's assembly policy has decreased the number of assemblies in hopes that fewer dates to fill would result in better assemblies. Highlights of the '56-'57 concert season have been lecturer Norman Cousins, the film version of Menotti's The Medium, the Paris Ballet of Lycette D'Arsonval, Hamlet as done by the Dublin Players, the National Symphony Orchestra and the Rochester Woodwind lluartet. FINANCE COMMITTEE Finance Committee, a sub-committee of the Student Government Association, is composed of twenty one membersg five from each class and the treasurer of S.G.A., who holds an honorary position. A commit- tee chairman is elected each spring from the membership. This committee handles all of the students' money. At their weekly meetings, they sign all the dispursing orders for student money and they check the hooks of the treasurers of the various student organiza- tions to make sure they are kept correct and up to date. It is this committee which prepares and discusses the budget before it is pre- sented to the student body for a vote of acceptance. With the treasurer of S.G.A., they handle all hospitalization and fire insurance. During the first semester of each year, Finance Committee awards three scholarships of three hundred dollars each on the basis of the financial need of the applicants. Because of the nature of this scholar- ship, the winners' names are never published. Dr. Barrington serves as faculty advisor to the committee. Seated on floor: R. Claus, T. Mecca, P. Adams. Row 3: ELECTION COMMITTEE How many times have you cast your vote in a P.S.T.C. election? The machinery of democracy in our college is that of the Election Committee. The planning, execution and follow-through on all Student Government elections are its responsibility necessitating scheduling elections, dis- tributing ballots, and counting votes. The prime job of the Committee is the election of freshman officers. Due to the difficulties inherent in elections in a new class, new plans for freshman elections were tried this year and further sugges- tions are being considered. Consisting of five members from each class, elected as are all standing committee members, the Election Committee functions with the help of Dr. Thomas Barrington. Another service project of ACE was preparing scrapbooksjor hospitalized children. To help themselves become better teachers, the members of ACE worked on such teaching aids as ques- tion boards and an association tile. During first semester they heard Dr. Beeler and Mr. Johnson speak on elementary education. Sending two delegates to an April ACE national conference in Schenectady was another activity of the organization during 1956-57. FUTURE TEACHERS UF AMERICA Able leadership proved its worth in the upsurge of F.T.A. activities this year. Under the guidance of Mary Livingston, president, and Dr. George Jeffers, advisor, the group included in its program a variety of activities. Besides sending delegates to the House of Delegates meeting in Buffalo, F.T.A. sponsored a workshop for high school students inter- ested in forming F.T.A. chapters, heard Dr. Franklin T. Mathewson speak on What to Look For When Applying For A Teaching Position, held a panel discussion on secondary school programs, caroled at Christmas, set up a library corner where educational materials received by the chapter are located, and showed the film A Desk For Billie. As the undergraduate elementary professional organization, it has served its members well. Officers: R. Smith, S. Brooks, S. Bethlehem, P. Hurst, M. Livingston, L. Wednesday night, following a roof-raising Dixieland concert hy the Salt City Five, a torchlit parade made its way to Old Main for the coronation of the 1957 Ice Carnival's King and llueen, Susan Rickmyre of Alpha Delta and Bruce Wolff of Theta Chi. Stunt night and its exotic costumes, music, lights, thrills, and laughs constituted our stopovers at various points on the glohe. Opposite climates took first places-Ago's Birds of Paradise and Lamhda's Penguins at the Poles. Saturday morning's activities were centered at the Clarkson Arena for the spills and chills of the skating races, singles, relays, and mildly hysterical obstacle races, the winners of the latter being re- warded with silvered hockey skate trophies. As a fitting climax for the gala celebration, we danced at the Continental lnterlude aided hy the foot-moving music of Claude Thornhill and his orchestra. Into our mental archives goes the 1957 carnival, its memories well worth the careful filing. ilu X 6 W5 in 3 8 . -- STUNTS AND STATUES ATHLETICS ' 4 is N? Row. 1: I. Maxcy, C. Battilana, A. Rundt, G. ' it 'M 'W k 4 E CRANE DEPARTMENT CRANE CHORUS 'f ' ? Under the able conducting of Dr. Helen Hosmer, Crane Chorus has once again sung itself through a memorable and a successful year. The Christmas concert on December 9 consisted of a most interest- ing and challenging work, King David, by Hnnegger. Besides the choral singing, the work called for a narrator, performed by Mr. Ralph Wakefield, a boy soprano, sung by Alan Crabb, and the witch of Endor, spoken by Miss Elsie Donnelly. After the Christmas concert the chorus experimented with two numbers by Bach-the Sing Ye To The Lord and the Mass in B Minor. These were conducted by Dr. Hosmer, the latter at a sight- reading performance. The annual May Festival was the climactic experience of the year when again the'Chorus was fortunate to have Thor Johnson as its guest conductor, performing Haydn's The Seasons. Dr. Hosmer thrilled the audience once more with her conducting of the King David. Under its director, Mr. Robert Reinert, the group has gained experience in ensemble singing and has added new pieces to the choir repertoire. Regular weekly rehearsals are held on Wednes- day afternoon for a two hour period. While membership in the choir is required of all students in the Music Supervisors Course, provided they are not participating in another musical organization, it is also open to other girls who have an interest in singing. Perhaps the time when the College Choir is most appreciated by the student body is just be- fore Christmas vacation when the choir does its share of fanning the Yuletide spirit with the singing of Christmas Carols in the halls. ln addition to that, the Choir presents its spring program in assembly. Straight, PHOENIX CLUB The Phoenix Club, the oldest organization in the Crane Department, was founded by Julia E. Crane. In the early days of Phoenix Club the personnel of the group was new each year like the mythical bird, the Phoenix, which renewed itself every five hundred years from the ashes of the old Phhenix. The group now consists of forty-five girls under the direction of Miss Mary English. It performed in Atlantic City in early March for the Eastern Division of the Music Educators National Conference. To help defray expenses of the trip, the girls conducted two money-making projects. The first of these was the presentation ofa concert in November in collaboration with Mr. Richard Griffith, baritone soloist. In Jan- uary, with the cooperation of Dr. Samuel Spurbeck, they were able to sell pages from an eighteenth century manuscript, thus adding to the fund. Performing again on April 11, Phoenix Club presented Dohnanyi's Stabat Mater, a cantata for double chorus of women's voices. The officers for this year were: Anne Bowers, President, Eunice Eckler, Vice-President, and Toby Cerasoli, Secretary-Treasurer. CULLEGIATES Collegiate Singers again had an interesting musical year under the direction of Mr. Brock McElheran. Monday evenings found the forty voice choir rehearsing for the two annual concerts which were presented on November B and May 2. At these concerts, the best in choral literature, ranging from the fifteenth cen- tury to present time, was sung. Mem- bership is open to all Crane and Elementary students who play band instruments. The group rehearses four hours a week under the direction ot Mr. Willard Musser at which time it plays concert music and marches. Mr. Musser gives information on backgrounds of arrangers and aids students who are studying conducting by letting them conduct and work with the band. College Band is a non-performing organizationg however, it has played for basketball games where it was well received. SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA The Potsdam Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Mr. Maurice Baritaud, opened its season on November 8, in a joint concert with Collegiate Singers. In this concert, the orchestra played the Symphony No. 1 by Shostakovitch and Overture to Oberon by Von Weber. Fea- tured was Mr. Edward Brombach as soloist in the 'Cello Concerto in C by Stamitz. In the Annual Christmas Concert, the orchestra very ably accompanied Crane Chorus in Arthur Honeggar's King David under the leadership of Dr. Helen Hosmer. In the second semester, the orchestra performed in the Concerto Program on February 24, and it gave a Spring Concert on April 28. 57 SYMPHONIC BAND Perhaps the instrumental highlight of the year was the joint tour of the Symphonic Band and Wind and Percussion Ensemble. The groups played throughout central New York State featuring compositions of the calibre of Toccata and Fugue by Frescobaldi and Hindemith's Symphony in B flat. The final concert was given at the New York State Music Association's annual conference. Mr. Harry Phillips conducts Symphonic Band, a group of seventy musicians. Wind and Percussion En- semble, a group of forty musicians is conducted by Mr. Willard Musser. The ranks of both groups are filled by audition with noticeable results. Men's Glee Club was organized some years ago by Dr. Horace Bowman. The group was composed entirely of members of the Crane Department and toured New York State singing at assemblies of several schools and giving evening concerts for the community. The group, now under the direction of Mr. Richard Griffith, numbers between thirty-five and forty members and has given two concerts this past year. WOUDWIND ENSEMBLE Row 1: A. Mills, L. Pivacek, W. A few years ago, M.E.N.C. established a tradition at Potsdam--an annual sight singing performance of a major work for chorus and orchestra. The Faure Requiem set the precedent in 1955, followed by the Mozart Requiem in 1956, and this year a peak was reached when the Bach Mass in B Minor was performed with Dr. Hosmer conducting. The officers for 1956-1957 are president, Evelyn Batchelor, vice- president, Richard Carter, secretary, Susan Smyklag treasurer, Rosemary Joyce. The faculty advisor is Miss Mary English. AGUNIAN The members of the Agonian sorority are recognized on campus by their white blazers and the chapter house at 11 Pierrepont Avenue by its identifying anchor. The gold, blue and white banner waved proudly as the Uss Ago was launched for the '56-'57 cruise with house im- provements insuring its sturdiness in all weather. Besides the usual functions with Potsdam and Clarkson fraternities and sororities, the Agos welcomed to their calendar the addition of Family Weekend in October which was followed by the Fabulous Fifties open house. Twelve new members were entered on the log during fall rushing and were just in time for the Christmas party sponsored by I.S.C. attended by second graders of the Campus School. Between semesters Alumnae Chapters were set up all over New York State for the purpose of furthering sisterhood and meeting Old Ages again. By September, four Alumnae Chapters will be actively operating. During Ice Carnival, the Agos took a Flight to Paradise winning first places in stunt competition and women's skating races. Continuing a long stand- ing tradition at freshman teas, rush parties, and open houses, the Four Beats continued to present music in the Ago manner. Following the formal initiation of the spring pledge class, the annual spring weekend was held at the Norwood Inn, bringing to a close the social agenda. The climax of the year, especially for seniors, was the early morning annual Senior Breakfast when we bid farewell to Ago and college days. Row 1: K. McCullough, E. Sing, C. Brown, B. Meehan, M. Combining paint, paper, hammers, nails and general enthusiasm, they worked together improving conditions inside and out, and now enjoy the homey atmosphere. October was the most eventful month in that it marked the 50th Anniversary of the organization on campus with many alumnae coming back to join the celebration. Phi K has, in addition, been busy with other social functions such as coffee hours, exchange dinners, Ice Carnival Stunt and Statue, Rush parties, Children's Easter Party, Spring Weekend, and the Annual Alumni Honorary members picnic. Some of the purposes of Phi Kappa Pi members are to strive toward improving oneself scholastically and socially, and to show friendliness and lend a helping hand towards each sister and schoolmate. Phi K's are seen on campus combining grey and gold jackets with a friendly smile. K Row 1: J. Vodek, P. Michne, M. Fitzgerald, E. Eckler, 1. Webb, Hathway. Row 3: G. Orsino, P. Dvorak, A. Mader, F. Feeling that a fourth sorority was nec- essary to the growing campus, a group of girls met for the purpose of forming one. Zeta's first meeting was held March 17, 1955 under the sponsorship of lntersorority Council, Dean Warfel and a special advisory board. At the intersorority picnic, May 22, 1955, the sorority presented its name, colors, pin and crest. Fall 1955 marked the beginning of an exciting first full year of sorority activities for Zeta. The soror- ity approaches the close of a second full year with deep regrets for the death of Theresa Hammond, soror- ity member who died on February 9, 1957. However, Zeta looks forward to returning next fall when the group will be using University Hall as its first real home. 71 DELTA KAPPA Row 1: W. Mercer, G. Lester, R. Hemmings, E. Del D. Egry, W. The DK's script- ed and composed until the wee hours. With the growing anthology of original tunes on hand a spring Song Fest to include songs from past DK shows was planned, sung by the fraternity and assorted young ladies. From one endeavor to another . . . This year's DK participation in Ice Carnival rated a second place award for the stunt Swiss Music Box. Dn the lighter side, one vic party a month was averaged plus Freshmen Party and three weekends. The lunior Prom Weekend and Ice Carnival Weekend follow similar patterns: a vic party Friday night, a house-cleaning party Saturday afternoon and a cocktail party before the formal. Concluding the social calendar was the Spring Party, a full day event, including the banquet, a cocktail hour, with a formal dance completing the evening. 72 M ... A .. Row 1: R. Bushmeyer, R. An academic average of 3.00 plus outstanding characteristics in the field of music education are required of prospective members. Well-known on campus for its sponsoring of the annual Pops Concert, Phi Sigma Mu once again presented its highlight in an entertaining manner this time featuring a faculty orchestra with a Greenwich Village theme. Money raised went largely into the scholarship fund which provided for four half-tuition scholarships. Another honor was awarded to the fraternity by virtue of being the host chapter for the Phi Sigma Mu national convention. Under the leadership of Susan Smykla as president and Miss Helen King, advisor, the fraternity can be assured that its job was well done. Row 1: D. Straight, R. Joyce, R. Robinson. Row 2: H. King, D. IUNIUR PROM ste.. ,.,. . ,R Sparkling, gay lights focused on Potsdam's social highlight on November 17, the Junior Premiere! That evening all roads led to the Clarkson Gym where the lunior Classes presented their Premiere amid potted palms, blazing marquees, and romantic silhouettes all softly lit by the multi-colored stars twinkling from above. ln this sophisticated atmosphere, three hundred couples danced from 10 to 2 to the music of Tommy Tucker and his orchestra. At midnight, all eyes turned to the regal purple velvet and pink satinithrone in the center of the floor as electric suspense flowed from couple to couple. Then the Queen of the lunior Class, Gail Roach, ascend- ed the throne. She was attended by a stately court-Barbara Ahele, Janice Cosselman, Iackie Dyke and Mary Livingston. g All good things must come to an end, however, and at two the Premiere faded into our realm of memories. gs. 5' K Officers: R.
