1 l Shakespearean Stage THE roughlg' built Shakesplearean stage was a high platform, oplen on three sides, and extending half way into t e ard of the t eater. All performances were in daylig t, and there was no curtain on the main stage. At each side of the rear was a door leading to the tiring-rooms, and a curtain, between these doors, which was drawn together before the play began, when pulled aside revealed the inner stage. Rushes were strewn on the floor. There was no scenery, and a trumpctcr, or a placard on one of the pillars, announced the scenes. Only men appeared, clad in elaborate costumes. 4
