emember PRESENTED BY THE SENIORS OF POTSDAM HIGH SCHOOL • POTSDAM, NEW YORK Jdirectory. cAdminid tration Will you ever forget the faculty in the office opening their morning mail and exchang- ing greetings? J emember When I I Yes, a decade from now, as you review these pages, this phrase will be prominent in your thoughts. To some it will recall the staff of this yearbook, the jamboree or other well managed money-raising projects. It will remind you of the long hours spent on these. The band, the other musical performances, the play, the special football, basketball, hockey or other athletic event will be relived. The practical experience you had enjoyed, the problems solved, the decisions made and the cooperative work necessitated will then appear as a great asset. By that time, you sixty odd seniors will be active adult citizens of Potsdam or other communities. Many of you will be in key positions in business, political, social and re- ligious life. You will have learned that the things you crave most in life are free— happiness, freedom and peace of mind, and that we gain these by giving them to some one else. As a group you hold great possibilities, and it is my sincere hope that you make the most of all opportunities to develop yourselves. Keep an inquiring mind and a firm determination and push ahead to the goal you have set for yourself. To all of you— happiness and success. Lewkowitz, Line Coach; Harrington, Head Coach; McCormick, Line Coach. Beginning practice, Coach Harrington began to mold his 1947 football squad around 13 lettermen. Led by Captain Ken Morgan, the Sandstone Grid- sters stepped thru a tough schedule with a 4 and 3 record. Facing the Saranac Lake team the Orange and Blue triumphed 7-6. The Lakers scored first and held their 6-0 lead to within 20 seconds of the game's finish when K. Morgan threw a short pass to Jacot who scored. Corbett supplied the winning margin. The P.H.S. team was victorious winning a see-saw battle from Gouverneur 27-19. Potsdam's outstanding back D. McGee, raced into the end zone twice, while Jacot and K. Morgan scored one each. Corbett converted 3 times. P.H. S. tasted their first defeat at the hands of the Can- ton Golden Bears by a score of 7-13. Potsdam scored first with D. McGee carrying. Potsdam won 32 to 6 over Malone. McGee was high scorer again with 2 T.D.'s, as Gallagher, Jebo and Hodge scored one each. Returning to their home field the PHS gridders suffered their worst defeat of the season to Massena, 37-7. The next week-end found Pots- dam losing their first road game to Tupper Lake 7-0. The game was a scoreless contest until Tupper Lake scored on a series of passes in the closing seconds. In the final game, PHS downed Ogdensburg 27-13. Potsdam scored first with Gallagher carrying the ball 80 yards. In the third period K. Morgan scored only to have Ogdensburg put on a rally and score their 13 points, tying the ball game. Then on the first play of the fourth quarter a Gallagher to Hodge pass produced a score, then a quarterback sneak by Jacot and a conversion by Corbett settled the final score and a successful climax to the foot- ball season. In the final league standings Potsdam finished in a tie with Ogdensburg for third place. One of Potsdam's outstanding backs, Bunky Gal- lagher earned a berth on the All-Northern first team. Frank Corbett, tackle, who is a senior, was placed on the All-Northern second team. Varsity Market ball Carrying on the tradition of the Harrington coached squads, the Potsdam Varsity Basketball Team finished a successful season in third place in the N. N. Y. league. The Potsdam Team faced Malone in the playoffs and lost a hard fought game 34-29. Four of Potsdam's first string players will graduate this June. Two of these boys, Woodruff and Captain Hodge, earned berths on the All Northern selec- tions. Gallagher, a Junior, and the team's leading scorer, was also selected. Potsdam's league-leading defensive record was due to the outstanding work of the guards, Manfred and Whalen. On the reserve list, McIntyre, Austin, Powell, Dart, Regan, Forbes and Jacot all added to the team's scoring power. Individual scores of the team are as follows: Gallagher 201 Jacot 7 Woodruff 193 Powell 7 Hodge 188 Austin 7 Manfred 61 Forbes 6 Whalen 38 Dart 4 McIntyre 27 Regan 3 An exciting moment in the Potsdam—O. Farrisee, captain and pitcher, had a record of six wins and one loss. Stan Towne and Joe Fiacco each won one game. K. Morgan, S. Towne, Hodge, and Farrisee led the hitters respectively. Potsdam's highly successful season was due large- ly to the capable coaching of S. Molnar who now coaches at P.S.T.C. The purpose of the organization is not only to develop an interest in athletics, but also to promote sportsmanship and good fellowship in every day life. The Varsity Club has been an active organization since it was founded in 1945 by Raymond Harring- ton, who was new to the Potsdam High School that year. A constitution containing the purpose of the club and a set of rules, was written by the seniors of that year under the guidance of Coach Harrington. Since that time the lettermen of Pots- dam High School have functioned as a body in various enterprises. Last year the Varsity Club con- tributed its funds toward the purchase of the auto- matic basketball scoreboard. Empire Boys' State, a project sponsored every summer by the American Legion, is organized to acquaint and educate the youth of New York State in democratic government and its functions. For a v eek, boys from all over the state gather, set up, and operate their own government and political party systems. Local American Legion posts spon- sor a boy from the junior class in high school to participate in this intensive program of citizenship training and athletic activity. The boy chosen to represent his community at Boys' State is selected by the members of the junior class on the basis of personality, scholarship, and extra-curricular activ- ity. Robert Austin represented Potsdam High School. Calendar The Class of 1948 may well look back on its senior year at PHS and remember the things which made the year a truly successful and enjoyable one. The activities were ably planned for the year by the Executive Committee and officers with the ex- pert guidance of Miss Gollaher. Officers of the class were: President, Robert Powell; Vice President, Ardis Smith; Secretary, Anna Dokianos; Treasurer, Richard Cleveland; and Business Manager, David Woodruff. In the annual Senior Jamboree the class fulfilled the custom every one better than the last. As a result of its financial success, the publication of the second edition of the SAND- STONER was assured. Working hard both aca- demically and in extra-curricular activities, the Class of 1948 turned in its last big job on Class Day. The final honor of graduation and the last fling at the Senior Ball left memories that all will remember. UPPER RIGHT: The milk bottle game. IN CIRCLE: Solid Geometry. BELOW: Our Homeroom.
