Potosi High Destination: Graduation 1951 Passenger List: 99 Freshmen LOG I: 4Time 0900 hours 6 September 19471 All ashore that's going ashore! sounded the voice of Principal VValton and we knew that only a short time would elapse before we would be on the high seas of learning. Since we were only fourth class passengers, we were assigned to the bottom deck. However, our staterooms were no dif- ferent from those of the other class passengers, but we were restricted to such rooms as lznglish, Civics, General Science, and Mathematics. For the most part. our daily routine was similar to that of the other pas- sengers who had previously occupied our deck. Most of us stood the first leg of our iourney well, but our attitude was one of envy and respect for those who occupied the three decks above. VVe had been at sea only a few weeks when it was necessary to organize our group. james Richards was elected Chief Steward: james Simpson, Asst. Steward: Roma Yost, Keeper of Records: and Lendel Turnbough, Finance Officer. This was our first detail, but there were many more to follow. As in years past, the all ship carnival date had arrived and the 4th deck was represented bv lfilene jetton as candidate for queen. Her official escort was Lendel Tournbough. TVe took a very active part in festivities, but our efforts were in vain. Despite our hard work our candi- date placed fourth. Thc first leg of our voyage was completed in mid-May of 1948 when we celebrated our debarkation by attending the all ship picnic on the VVashington State Park deck. Delete: Passenger List: 99 Freshmen Add: Passenger List: 88 Sophomores LOG ll: tTime 0900 hours September 19489 The second leg of our iournev was started without the confusion that was characteristic of the beginning of our voyage. The Passenger list had been amended and our deck watch was fewer in numbers. lfrom the fourth deck we were moved to third and a few more staterooms were opened to us. XYe had a bit more freedom about ship and our participation in the ship's activities were greater in number. Our first group meeting was to reorganize our deck. For this leg of the iourney we elected james Simpson. Steward: lfilene jetton. Asst. Stewardg Roma Yost, retained as Keeper of Records: League llargus. Finance Of- ficer. The annual All Ships carnival was at hand and it was necessary -to elect our candidate for queen. Roma Yost was selected bv the vote of the gobs to be our entry, escorted bv Newton Sloan. The decks of the old U.S.S. Potosi High were illuminated with gaietv and laughter the night of the carnival but Old Deck 3's candidate was awarded third place. The remainder of the iournev was rather uneventful. XX'e went about our daily duties branded as sophomores. llowever. when Deck 2 entertained Deck 1 with a banquet in the Ship's Gym. six bovs and six girls from Deck 3 were detailed to serve. By mid-Hay of '49 we knew we were nearing port for the swells of the sea had given wav to mere waves. Also, the time was set for the all-school picnic. This event proved to be a gala success, and the facilities of the VVashington State Park Deck were utilized for the occasion. Debarkation was completed orderly. and the U.S.S. Potosi High was placed in drv dock for the ensuing three and one-half months. After much effort for the past two years the band acquired the new uniforms. It was with pride and pleasure each member, together with the director. Mr. Tal Smith, spoke their appreciation for the donations from various patrons and clubs. espe- cially the Lion's Club. which made these uniforms possible. They arrived in time to be worn at the Cape Girardeau Nlusic Festival on March 31. There the band received a rating of II, which is one step higher than that of last year. The contest number was Heroic Overture by Taylor. We hope to make a I rating next year since we lost only five members with the 1951 class. Numerous parades and concerts were participated in, among them being those at Christmas, a special concert and the Spring Festival. The season closed with the band appearing on May 18 and 19 at the Horse Show which is sponsored annually by the I.ion's Club. VVith this, the members felt they had left an excel- lent year's work behind as school closed. min C.. BA 'KETBALL NEASU The Potosi Trojan 1950-51 Basketball season was perhaps the most successful of any season since 1945. Coach Corse's UA team had a very impressive season's record of fourteen victories and only seven losses in the regular season play. The Tr0jan's only weakness was tourna- ment games. Throughout the year the team won only one tournament game and lost four. The squad won its first five games with easy victories over Belgrade, Caledonia, Douglass of Festus, lrondale, and Bismarck. The first loss was at the hands of the Elvins Indians who scored the winning basket in the last thirty seconds. Going into the lronton Tournament, the team had a 5-1 record. They were seeded second in the tournament, but after winning the opener they were defeated by Piedmont in the quarter finals in a double overtime heartbreaker. The loss to Piedmont seemed to take something out of the team as they lost three consecutive games to Desloge, Centerville, and Crystal City. After easy victories over Bonne Terre and Hillsboro and losses to Farmington and Festus, they defeated DeSoto for another upset. Having a season's record thus far of only eight won and six lost, the squad was not seeded in the Christmas tourney held at Hereuleaneum and was eliminated in the first round by seeded, undefeated Crystal City. DeSoto gained a degree of revenge by defeating the Trojans at DeSoto. The boys once again hit the victory road with four consecutive wins over Hillsboro, Centerville, Douglass, and Leadwood. Although unseeded in the Desloge Invitational, the team entered the tourney with confidence. However in the closest, most exciting game of the tournament, the Purple Pups of Leadwood eliminated the Trojans in the opening round. A hard-fought victory over the lronton Tigers and an easy decision over lrondale closed the regular season's play. In the state regional held at Farmington, the tournament jinx pre- vailed and Potosi was eliminated by lronton. This was Coach Ralph Corse's second and last year at the helm of the Trojans and two fine winning seasons, the first in five years. Captain and most valuable player, james Richards, along with XVayne Henderson. Charles Strange, Bill Hawkins, james Simpson, and Richard Sitzes have finished their basketball at P.H.S. as have basketball managers, League Hargus and Elwin Fryman. 37 VARSITY CL B James Franklin jack Henrv Ted Banta B111 Hawkxns Don Sxxlft Stephen Rlchards Davxd Compton james Slmpson james Richards james Thurman VVaxne Henderson Nlorrxs Long League Hargus George Rlchards Donald Portell Charles Strange Robert Essmyer Spomor: VVendell Galx m and Ralph Corse A new O1'g21n1Z8flOn Jolned the ranks of school act1x1t1es October 5 1950 xxhen Coach Ralph Corse called together the lettermen of the school and formed the N ars1tV Club The followlng oHicers xx ere elected Presldent james Rlchards X 1ce Presldent Wax ne Henderson Xlembershlp 1n the club xx as l1m1ted to those students xx ho held letters rn anx sport or held a posxtlon of manager Durmg the xear members of the club xx orlted untlrlnglx sellmg candx and coke Nexx xx arm up sults for the -X Team xx ere purchased xxlth the generous dona tions of the busmess men of Potosl The X arsltx Club tofrether xx 1th the Pep Squad held an In1t1at1on Frollc Aprll 4 Ex erx one xx as entertalned bx the COl'll1C2'll appearances of the nexx members xx ho xx ere 1n1t1ated Each one represented such characters as cupld hula dancers Xlxss AIUCIICS and others 38 9 . 9 I U 7 Y 9 A I I gg 11 i , . . Two young married couples had ideal summer vacations disrupted when ghostly visitors appeared and frightened the servants, especially Magnolia, the cook, Bill, the tramp, and Nose, the handy man, furnished the thrills, humor, and suspense.
