I am encouraged that students, faculty, and staff have worked together as a team, and the results of this effort are re- warding. We are in an age of accountability, as well as an age of inflation, but I am confident that if we continue to work together as a unit, we can build an even better Potomac State College, and in turn be better prepared for the challenging future in the years ahead. Congratulations to the Catamount staff for an excellent l publication. A. Ci. Slonaker Dean of the College Dr. A. G. Slonaker, executive dean Prof. lames T. Handlan, associate dean Aside from being a nostalgic record for students at Potomac State College, each yearly issue of the Cata- mount carries an important history of this college. The changes that have been made, the advances in knowledge, new attitudes, and the way each class faces the challenges of its year are found within the covers of the yearbook. The tempo of the time is here, and how each class searched for solutions to the problems of its day is written for all to see. The students and their faculty sponsor who worked to produce the yearbook are to be congratulated for the excellent results which are set here for a record of 1974. lames T. The fraternity was granted a National Charter by the National College Panhellenic and has been designated Beta Chapter. The fraternity began its year with a successful and entertaining pledge party during the fall Rush Week, which netted them several members. In the autumn activities the fraternity sponsored a candidate for Miss Homecoming. Miss Deborah Brady reigned as princess at the Sigma sponsored Sweetheart Ball. The Fraternity demands college spirit, interest in all college ac- tivities, high moral standards, individual development of character and leadership, and scholastic achievement from all its members. Men who are now away from the college but often return to visit their old fraternity are indications of the fact that the bonds of friendship established in Phi Sigma Nu provide lasting memories in future years. Marshall a standout here two years ago before being injured and missing the second half ofthe season, had eight unassisted tackles, four assists, and sacked the quarterback four times. Noel, all-Coastal Conference linebacker and perhaps the best in the league last year, had seven unassisted tackles and six assists in the game. The State coaching staff from head coach Cecil Perkins on down believes both are worthy of All-American consideration. 82 A Look from the Press Box f r- Cary Watson 83 fl If Another Player Injured. V v. gf, 'FW f' A mm ix .J-'Z - - y o 0 u o X 0 Ancient Statue is Origin of PSC Newspaper Title Carrying news of the campus to students, faculty and a wide public is the college newspaper, the Pasquino, a fortnightly publication staffed by stu- dents majoring in journalism assisted by a group of volunteer staff members. The Pasquino's press run of 2200 copies is distrib- uted to students, faculty and staff on the campus. In addition, a mailing list of well over 1000, contains the names of parents of all non-commuting students, alumni throughout the world, hundreds of other colleges and high schools of the tri-state area, friends of the college, and advertisers. When Potomac State became a junior college in 1921, the staff of the former publication, The Pre- paratory Herald, wanted a new title for the college newspaper and chose the name Pasquino from one of the famous talking statues of Rome. The statue's origin was derived from a hunchbacked tailor named Pasquino, whom Romans feared and respected be- cause of his biting, but amusing, sarcasm. After Pas- quino's death, the neighborhood people erected an antique statue in his memory. This statue became a target for sharp commentaries on the life of the period - safe because anonymous. The statue proved so effective an agent to secret protest that it and similar statues began to talk. ,f- Bob Petit typing a story 136 1- gr . 1 Q 'atv' , -1.332 A ' H I J ,L Wl.,?4:ff.g .. ..
