X' FD QUSVK4' f I irq DANA G. LOUGH ' ai...--... ,,.. ,ix Thirty Five Years of Service 1935-1970 The West Virginia Hills, which he loves with a passion, are his heritage and the basic foundation of all that he believes in and has striven for. From these hills, and the wonderful couple whom he proudly acclaims as his parents, he inherited an incomparable physique, a strong mind and will, and a resoluteness of purpose that has found expression in every activity of his long and distinguished career. An All State selection at Morgantown High School, a move me if you can lineman on some of West Virginia University's greatest football teams, a stellar performer on the Ironton Tanks pro football team, a high school teacher, coach, and principal, prepared him for the tenure at Potomac State College beginning in 1935. His period of service spans more than one half of the history of the college. To the public he is known as an athletic coach,-and indeed his name is emblazoned among the GREAT in the records of The West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and other Athletic Conferences. But his co-workers at Potomac State have known him also as a teacher of history, and, indeed, for a time as the teacher of physical education for women, and as the preceptor of the men's residence halls. A fierce but fair competitor, a stern but just disciplinarian,-he craved and fought for victory, but was never embittered by defeat. His greatest pride is his boys,-and he had this pride in both victory and defeat. And these boys have become leaders in their chosen fields,-medicine, law, engineering, education, ministry, coaching, business, government, and the armed services, and many there are who give him credit for opening the door of opportunity by inspiring them and making it possible for them to attend college. THESE MEN-ONLY BOYS GROWN TALL, bespeak the true worth of DANA GLENN QHORSEJ LOUGH, to whom this book, in part, is dedicated. VIOLA UMSTOT LOUGH Twenty Seven Years of Service 1943-1970 Viola Umstot Lough Since teams have been all-important to Coach Lough's career, it is appropriate to mention the other member ofhis personal team, his wife Viola, known to her friends as Vi, and to thousands of students as Mrs. Lough. She has always been the Coachis most loyal and devoted fan, experiencing all the trials of competition, suffering with him in defeat and rejoicing with him in victory. During World War ll, Vi was practically catapulted into two widely different fields of service to Potomac State College: that of preceptress of one wing of Davis Hall occupied by girls, and the more arduous one of school dietician. Needless to say, she served in both capacities with distinction. ln 1945, the duty of preceptress was terminated, and Mrs. Loughis full time was devoted to the successful management of the dining hall, and to serving of delicious, well-balanced meals to resident students and staff members. We, the members of the Catamount staff, express the gratitude and congratulations of thousands of students to this noble and proud team of Dana tllorsej Lough and his team mate, Vi. We thank them for their many years of service to our college, and we proudly dedicate this 1970 Catamount, in part, to Viola Umstot Lough. , Ulalfq ' in fi by t ri im W i rpz .... 2 4 .
