LOUGH ' ai...--... ,,.. ,ix Thirty Five Years of Service 1935-1970 The West Virginia Hills, which he loves with a passion, are his heritage and the basic foundation of all that he believes in and has striven for. From these hills, and the wonderful couple whom he proudly acclaims as his parents, he inherited an incomparable physique, a strong mind and will, and a resoluteness of purpose that has found expression in every activity of his long and distinguished career. An All State selection at Morgantown High School, a move me if you can lineman on some of West Virginia University's greatest football teams, a stellar performer on the Ironton Tanks pro football team, a high school teacher, coach, and principal, prepared him for the tenure at Potomac State College beginning in 1935. His period of service spans more than one half of the history of the college. To the public he is known as an athletic coach,-and indeed his name is emblazoned among the GREAT in the records of The West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and other Athletic Conferences. But his co-workers at Potomac State have known him also as a teacher of history, and, indeed, for a time as the teacher of physical education for women, and as the preceptor of the men's residence halls. A fierce but fair competitor, a stern but just disciplinarian,-he craved and fought for victory, but was never embittered by defeat. His greatest pride is his boys,-and he had this pride in both victory and defeat. And these boys have become leaders in their chosen fields,-medicine, law, engineering, education, ministry, coaching, business, government, and the armed services, and many there are who give him credit for opening the door of opportunity by inspiring them and making it possible for them to attend college. THESE MEN-ONLY BOYS GROWN TALL, bespeak the true worth of DANA GLENN QHORSEJ LOUGH, to whom this book, in part, is dedicated. My Basketball Team Gets Tips from Coach 13 VIOLA UMSTOT LOUGH Twenty Seven Years of Service 1943-1970 Viola Umstot Lough Since teams have been all-important to Coach Lough's career, it is appropriate to mention the other member ofhis personal team, his wife Viola, known to her friends as Vi, and to thousands of students as Mrs. Lough. She has always been the Coachis most loyal and devoted fan, experiencing all the trials of competition, suffering with him in defeat and rejoicing with him in victory. During World War ll, Vi was practically catapulted into two widely different fields of service to Potomac State College: that of preceptress of one wing of Davis Hall occupied by girls, and the more arduous one of school dietician. Needless to say, she served in both capacities with distinction. ln 1945, the duty of preceptress was terminated, and Mrs. Loughis full time was devoted to the successful management of the dining hall, and to serving of delicious, well-balanced meals to resident students and staff members. We, the members of the Catamount staff, express the gratitude and congratulations of thousands of students to this noble and proud team of Dana tllorsej Lough and his team mate, Vi. We thank them for their many years of service to our college, and we proudly dedicate this 1970 Catamount, in part, to Viola Umstot Lough. , Ulalfq ' in fi by t ri im W i rpz .... 2 4 . He literally beat the brush for students for this college in his early days, and he has witnessed the gradual growth of this educational institution from a small school to a somewhat complex campus. lkey has taught economics to many and given his students an insight into the fabulous world of Wall Street. He has served very well and willingly on numerous committees, and for many years was the extremely capable advisor to Theta Sigma Chi fraternity. It is a compliment to Mikey to say, Those who did not have him as a teacher had only a partial education. He gladly taught, and he served with devotion. The staff of the 1970 Catamount proudly dedicates this book, in part, to a gentleman, a teacher, and a devoted husband - Ervin Leslie Dayton. Isabella Rolls Clifford Mrs. Isabella Rolls Clifford, Known to thousands of students, faculty members, townfolks, and friends as Isabella, or Miss Isabellaw, had with dignity and grace served Potomac State College for thirty-two years. The twinkle in her eyes, and her pert smile, has enabled many a student to start the day in an optimistic mood. In turn, most students greeted Isabella every morning with Good morning! Isabella! or Hi! Isabellall' and she, too, would smile in return. At graduation time, Miss Isabella often stood on the side lines and witnessed the graduates march past, and there is little doubt she was proud of the role she played in the lives of the many graduates. With due respect and gratitude, the staff of the 1970 Catamount proudly dedicates this book, in part, to faithful Isabella Rolls Clifford, who will always be Miss Isabellal' to us. HANDLAN Egan 18 U65 Qgzaaicfanfls .snags A New Decade, the theme of this yearbook, reminds us not only of the passage of time, but also of the implied promise of change in the years of the seventies. Certainly the l96O,s brought profound dislocation and change to much of American society. The seventies beckon with uncertain meaning. So far as Potomac State College is concerned, the new decade undoubtedly signals renewed efforts to define the purposes and nature of higher education and to devise strategies to achieve new levels of insight. We shall need to investigate many of our assumptions regarding why and how particular things are learned. We may conclude, faculty and students alike, that new times require different approaches to education. For all of us then, the seventies promise challenge and rational response at Potomac State College. As you peruse this Catamount, I hope you find much that reminds you of worthy effort and significant ideals. I hope, too, that as you look back to 1969-70, you will find intimations of a future bright with hope and signs of educational effort appropriate to a new decade. V .ng Q Af 1 1 . f David G. Its duties include the organization and management of many activities on campus. Beginning at registration, Student Government welcomed freshmen, distributed Freshman Rules, sold beanies and sponsored a watermelon feast in the Student Union. In tribute to Coach Dana G. Lough, Student Government worked hard to make Homecoming and Parent's Day the best in P.S.C.,s history. A parade, thuse, bonfire, wiener roast, talent show and dance kicked off the weekend celebration. This yearls theme for.the Homecoming Dance was A Hundred Years of Football and 35 Years of Service to Potomac State College. Along with the drafting ofa new Constitution, Student Government nominated students to serve on the 10 college committees enabling them to work with the faculty in deciding school policies. A major activity sponsored by Student Government jointly with Circle K was the appearance of McKendree Spring in a two-hour concert on January 24. The concert attracted an audience of over 600 students and adults. The Legislature worked diligently throughout the year to uphold the Constitution by trying f'to promote a common understanding, to provide for the orderly conduct of the affairs of the college, to elevate the standards of scholarship, and to increase school spirit. 78 'H Brad Shuman . . The production of the book began at the beginning of the year, although the staff was chosen last year. It progressed from plans in minds and on paper to the actual editing, and finally to the distribution of the books. The 1970 Catamount is a result of many hours of labor by the staff with the' hope that it will be received as a success by the students. To them it should represent the memories, hopes, and dreams that are crowded into one short year at Potomac State College. This year's Catamount is presented to the Student Body in the hope that these pages have captured that feeling and spirit that can be found here at Potomac State College. Dr. Atwater and Staff Work to Meet Deadline Continuing its tradition of nearly half a century, the Pasquino, the campus newspaper, presents Potomac State College news and views fortnightly for students, parents, the college staff, many alumni, a broad coverage of other colleges and high schools, and others. The newspaper came into existence in September, 1921, the same time the institution acquired junior college status. The journalism department sponsors the publication, and working with the paper gives journalism students valuable laboratory experience. There is, however, an opportunity for non-journalism majors to have staff positions, especially in such non-editorial roles as working with the advertising, circulation, and photographic staffs. For class and editorial work, students work in a modern journalism complex in Academy Hall, opened this year. In addition, the students have the advantage of working at the Keyser News-Tribune on page paste-ups in preparation for the printing which is done in offset. Sponsored by the Pasquino are the annual Student-Faculty Directory and a staff banquet in the spring. 1969-70 STAFF Editor ...... . . . Amamda C. Stevens News Editor . . . ........ Linda K. The club was established in 1952 and was issued certificate number six when Circle K became international. At the present time, there are 750 Circle K clubs and over 16,000 members in the United States and Canada. The club is made up of young men of good character and scholastic standing bonded for the common purpose of the uplifting of humanity and the preservation of the ideals of our democracy. Their only return from this never-ending service is the thanks and appreciation that comes from such work. The club has always been very active with the major projects this year being: sponsoring the Homecoming parade, bringing the Red Cross Blood Mobile to the campus, working at football and basketball games, co-sponsoring with the Student Government the McKendree Springs Concert, delivering birthday cakes to the students, delivering starvation kits to the students during the final examination periods, operating the used-bookstore, and many other such worthy projects. In line with the international theme for 1969-1970 Drugs and Drug Abuse , the Circle K Club sponsored several lectures and films on the effects of drug abuse. Through this service to the campus and community, a tradition has evolved for Circle K members. This tradition is one of leadership and of character. These activities are a field trip, a barbecue to which the faculty was invited, and a field trip with the Home Economics Club to a point of interest of both clubs. The caves are usually explored on week-ends. The largest cave visited was Cave Mountain Cave near Smoke Holes. Five of the members spent the night in the cavern and explored over two miles of passages on five levels. One room on the first level was 900 feet long, up to 35 feet high and 50 feet wide. A second room on the third level was 1500 feet long, 65 feet wide and 50 feet high. The cave had many interesting columns and ilowstones throughout. This organization was founded for the purpose of fostering scholarship and citizenship. It has remained a local honor society throughout these years with its own constitution, ritual, insignia, and traditions. Membership in Sigma Phi Omega is the highest honor to be conferred on Potomac State College students. Sigma Phi Omega sponsors two convocations annually. The first, the Know-Your-Organizations assembly, is presented during Freshman Week in order to acquaint new students with the various campus organizations, their objectives, and their activities. At the end of the school year the society presents Recognition Day. At this convocation various honors and awards are presented and a summary of the activities of all campus groups is given. The highlight of the academic year is the Spring Banquet, which honors new members and the parents of all members, as well as the faculty of Potomac State College. The society invites an outstanding personage to be guest speaker at this event. Members of Sigma Phi Omega strive to be helpful wherever possible in cooperation with students, administration, and faculty. 107 :Rctg cflfldfifazy Oyonozazg octet The Roth Military Honorary Society was organized in 1953 to pay tribute to students enrolled in ROTC who maintained a high academic average in ROTC and their other academic subjects and who displayed moral integrity and citizenship. The society was named after Col. Samuel Roth who was instrumental in establishing the ROTC program at Potomac State College. Col. Roth was the Professor of Military Science at West Virginia University. To be invited and accepted into the society, a student must attain a minimum grade of B in Military Science and have an overall academic average of C or better. The preamble of the societyis constitution best serves to state the purpose and objectives of the society. We, the members of the Roth Military Honorary Society, in order to foster, develop, and preserve the highest ideals of the Military Profession, to promote American citizenship, to encourage and increase leadership, and to provide recognition of a high degree of military attainment among the cadets of the Reserve Officers Training Corps unit at Potomac State College of West Virginia University, do hereby establish this constitution? Under the leadership of Stephen W. Wolford, the organization has been active. The annual Roth Banquet was held in November and highlighted the first semester activities which included initiation of new members, entering a float in the Homecoming parade and supporting the Catamount Rifle Team. The second semester saw Roth sponsoring the annual Military Ball in April, selecting a queen to reign over the ball, initiating freshman members and nominating ROTC Battalion sponsors for election by the freshmen of the Battalion. Throughout the entire year, Roth sponsored and conducted ceremonies of a military nature in conjunction with college events. Members of the society are distinguished from other members of the cadet corps by the scarlet and White ribbon and fourragere worn by all members. Membership in Roth Military Honorary Society is considered a scholastic achievement which is a status sought by all cadets and will as such inevitably carry on in the fine traditions characteristically sought by this organization. 108 fofff ,GDKSJQSQ for 7Q7O ROTH OFFICERS Commander . .............. .... The Council's purpose is the promotion of good will and cooperation among the fraternities and sororities. In September, two members, one of whom is the president, are elected from each Greek organization on campus to form the Panhellenic Council. Panhellenic meets on the first Monday of each month to consider fraternity-sorority relations and proposed campus activities. The most important Panhellenic discussions center on the regulation of Rush Week, Hell Week, fraternal participation in campus elections, and the selection of the fraternity and sorority which, through a system of points, have made the greatest contributions to campus life for the year. 130 ' A o cog Cczfzsfufgj ay 5 ou :flflacfa 7661 Q3 5 QE 1. 1 . The Middies of Bainbridge Naval Academy spoiled the 1969 season opener for the Potomac State Catamounts, winning by a 31-6 count. The game played in a steady drizzle saw the Cats score only once on a 35-yard run of Rick Avjean. The Chowan Braves from Murfreesboro, North Carolina handed the Catamounts their second straight defeat when they rallied to a 29-12 victory at Stayman Field. Lanny Propst hit Stan Schaefer with a 26-yard pass for the first Cat touchdown. Later Propst scored from three yards climaxing a 65-yard drive. 4 Traveling to New York to play Nassau Community College, the Catamounts were routed 65-0. The Cats' desperate effort was not enough for Nassau's superior offense. The Cats failed at their attempt to pick up an initial win for the year when they dropped a 19-0 contest to Montgomery Junior College of Rockville, Maryland. The away game was characterized by strong defensive effort on the part of the Cats. Wesley College ruined State's bid for its first win of the 1969 campaign when 'it handed the Cats a 53-14 beating at Stayman Field. Joe Jaglowski put State on the board when he slammed over from the one-yard line. Danny Hinkle scored the other Cat TD from the ten-yard line. Harford Junior College capitalized on a pair of interceptions to defeat the Cats 20-6 at BelAir, Maryland. Rick Avjean scrambled 80 yards for the only Cat TD, Potomac State Catamounts failed in their last attempt to pick up a victory in their 1969 football season when Baltimore Junior College handed them a 41-0 set-back at the Homecoming and Parents' Day game November 8. ! gage! ll , A X 134 I A 1 -:uni n, . Lough began his 35th season as lead basketball coach by dropping the first contest to Mongtomery 109-64. Coach Lough was plagued with a lack of experienced men. Sophomore James Brodengeyer clipped in 11. The next night the Middies of Bainbridge handed the Cats their second defeat 99-51. Freshman James Robinson netted 14 points. Bainbridge's superior height meant the difference in a game which started out as a defensive battle. On their first road trip of the year, Prince George Community College scorched the Catamounts 110-51. Prince George put on a high-scoring performance, netting 59 points in the first half. Sophomore Richard Holland clipped in 12 points to add to the losing effort. The following afternoon the Cats battled Charles College, Waldorf, Md. The Cats playing a strong defense slowed the Charles College shooting display down, but their effort was not enough. Charles finally won 84-75. Freshman James Robinson burned 21 points, with Jim Brodengeyer adding 15 and Lanny Propst chipping in 13. The Cats closed out their pre-holiday festivities by losing to Hagerstown Junior College 105-56. Jim Robinson pushed in 16 and Mike Ahlfeld netted 14. Potomac State started the second semester with only 9 basketball players. Facing Allegheny campus of University of Pa., the Cats showed their lack of personnel losing 101-74. Yet Jim Brodengeyer burned in 25 points, Jim Robinson netted 19 points and Richard Holland added 9 points. Montgomery Junior College handed the Cats their next defeat 109-83. Montgomery's sharpshooters proved superior to the Cats' de- fense. Richard Holland clipped in 23 points and Jim Brodengeyer added 21. The cats' battle-ridden defense was not enough to stop the superior shooting of Allegany Community College, who routed the Cats 102-76. However, Jim Robinson burned in 26 points and Jim Brodengeyer clipped in 15 points. The Cats' defense greatly improved, was not enough for the Campers. Traveling to Harford Community College, the Catamounts were handed a defeat 68-53. The Cats battled to a 30-21 halftime on the shooting of Jim Brodengeyer and the defensive play of Robinson. Brodengeyer finally netted 17 points and Robinson 12. The next night the Cats dropped another close one 78-61 to Essex Community College. Essex leading only 31-27 at halftime finally won 78-61. The Cats' cold shooting was the factor which made the difference. Robinson and Brodengeyer netted 14 each. Playing before a near capacity crowd, the Cats won their first game 73-70. The sharpshooting of Brodengeyer, Robin- son, and Holland was too much for Frederich Community College. Down 35-28 at halftime, the Cats rallied to win on their shooting, and good ball control. Brodengeyer burned in 23, Robinson netted 21, and Holland meshed 17. Shenandoah College handed the Cats a 86-68 defeat on the cold shooting of the Cats. Shenandoah's defense slowed the Cats down too much. Holland added 18 and Robinson tossed in 16 to the losing effort. The Cats, playing at home again, were scorched 70-45 by Catonsville. Brodengeyer managed to net 17 points, despite the Catonsville's defense and Cats' cold shooting. Journeying to Altoona, the Cats dropped a close one 79-75 to the Altoona campus of the University of Pitt. Holland's 21 points, Brodengeyer's 19, and Robinson's 17 was not enough for the full court press often employed by Altoona. Allegany Community College sharpshooting display left no doubt as to the victor beating the Cats 98-88. Holland added 22 points and Brodengeyer tossed in 23 points to keep the Cats in the game right up until the end. With games left with Altoona and Shenandoah the Cats are still anxious for a victory to close our Coach Dana G. Lough's career. .gr 2 , u Q. I 1 ! Hooray! Hooray!
