Dubois THE CHURCH-McKEE ARTS CENTER The Church-McKee Arts Center, constructed and equipped at a cost of approximately Sl,400,000, was made possible through combined State and Federal funds. During groundbreaking ceremonies March 22, 1966, Mrs. Gilbert S. Bachmann, a member of the Board of Governors of West Virginia University, remarked that the building will be a promise to today's students,a promise to tomorrow,s students, and an expression of the State's faith in Potomac State College. As construction got underway, President Todd H. Bullard spoke of the college's realizing a long cherished ambition to provide the institution with the means of stimulating increased cultural and aesthetic appreciation among its students'f The Church-McKee Arts Center is truly a multi-pur- pose building. The auditorium provides not only seating for nearly 1,000 persons, a generous size stage, dressing rooms and supporting areas for dramatics, and a three-bay projection area for visual aids, but has movable partitions which enable the auditorium area to be divided into four large classrooms. Future plans call for the use of closed cir- cuit television in conjunction with a new academic build- ing scheduled for completion in 1969. The arts wing contains studios, classrooms, and offices for music and art. Robert J. Bennett, Morgantown, was architect for the building. Mellon-Stuart Company, Pittsburgh, was general contractor. McKee Ernest Elliott Church gn Zeofcafzbzz We dedicate this building to enrichment and elevation of the human spirit through the mystery and grace of music, the critical insights of drama, the liberating quality of art, and the stimulation of liberal education. We dedicate this building to the advancement of aesthetic experience throughout the collegiate commun- ity. We dedicate this building to students youngand old who may within these halls find that necessary mixture of disciplined knowledge and rare emotional expression which is the essence of all art. Leonard G. Withers Professor and Chairman Department of Music I ,,,, . g -lu-Q., 7' The Arts Center being dedicated today bears the names of two of Potomac State College's most esteemed former administrators, Ernest Elliott Church, president 1936-1964, and Kirkland Shepherd McKee, dean 1936- 1963. They were an unforgettable team, working in the interest of Potomac State College for over a quarter of a century. The two educators began duties in their respective roles here the fall of 1936, Dr. Church following 17 years and Dean McKee 19 years of prior service in pub- lic education. Dean McKee died in office May 20, 1963. Dr. Church resigned July 1964 to become executive secretary to the West Virginia Commission on Higher Education, retiring from that position in July 1967. Their combined 55 years of service to this college spanned a period of growth from the meager to the abun- dant in every area of campus life. Theirs were rich and full years of service not only to this college but to the community and to the cause of higher education in the State of West Virginia.
