The Mountain State offers the World's most beautiful setting-sparkling streams and springs, green forests, and the eternal mountains-for the path which winds before you. This path leads upward-up the challenging mountains that lie in your Way. To reach the heights is your goal. The moun- tain path is filled with diversions which may distract the unwary or those of little endurance. But also to be found along the way are opportunities for adventure and en- joyment. There may be found staffs to aid in the climb, if a little effort is used to find and enlist these aids. The skillful climber will be able to do so. The heights will be reached-beginning with the Mountain of Learning-and before you will spread the broad horizons of life. The valleys you have follovvedg peaks you have reachedg memor- able views you have observedg friends you have passed along the way-all these, and more, we, the staff of the 1966 Catamount, hope you will find Within these pages. . Having joined the faculty of Potomac State College in the fall of 1948, Dr. Murphy has taught, advised, befriended, chatted with, and inspired hundreds of students. His colleagues esteem him as a capable and understanding teacher. His Wife and three children know him as a devoted and loving husband and father. His friends rec- ognize him as a congenial, thoughtful, and loyal associate. Dr. Murphy is a member of the Executive Committee of Potomac State College. He has also served as adviser to Phi Kappa Omega Fraternity since its origin in 1949. Dedicated to the Welfare of his church, he has been chairman of the Commission on Education and a member of the Board of Trustees of the First Methodist Church of Keyser for many years. In the words of the poet Leigh Hunt, Allen Murphy is . . .one that loves his fel- lowmenf' and tomorrow, I'll take them on a field trip. AD MINI S TRATI N FA UUL TY -' , . ' 'V 1. BULLARD ffizceszknf For nearly two-thirds of a century Potomac State College has been educating young men and Women to assume positions of leadership in the state and nation. The aspirations and performance of the col- lege have surpassed the heights of the Appalachian peaks surrounding the institution. As you review this pictorial record of the college in the years ahead, I hope that you will draw in- spiration from memories of teachers and friends happy and challenging experiences, and the atmos- phere of an institution determined to grow above and beyond its mountain fastness. This un- fruitful year was a drop from last year's also low slate of 2-5-1. Bainbridge Naval Academy invaded Stayman Field Sept. 18, and walked off with a 21-2 victory. State's first two points of the season came in the form of a touchback. However, the visitors broke loose in the second half for three touchdowns. The Catamounts lost their second encounter of the season to Chowan College, Sept. 25 on the home turf. By means of a series of short runs, Chowan swamped the locals in the first 35 minutes of the game. Later in the game, a visiting gridder scam- pered for a 95 yard touchdown to put the finishing touches on a 28-0 victory. On Oct. 2, Shenandoah College tallied 13 points in the first quarter, and the Catamounts were never able to catch up, as they dropped their third con- secutive decision of the year 20-7. The Cat's first touchdown of the year came on a 63 yard pass play. They then added their extra point on another pass. Ferrum College dealt the Loughmen their fourth setback of the year as they downed the Cats 14-0 to spoil the annual Homecoming game. Even When Do I Go In? though they lost, the State gridders deserved a lot of credit for trying as Ferrum was rated 16th among junior college football teams in the nation. Montgomery Junior College of Takoma Park, Md., handed the Cats their worst loss of the season by a score of 56-0. The Loughmen were definitely off the mark that dayg three of Montgomery's touchdowns came on pass interceptions. Before an estimated crowd of 1,000, the Tigers of Wesley College gave the Cats their sixth straight loss of the year, on Oct. 23. State threatened many times during the game, but unsuccessfully. Meanwhile, Wesley racked up 20 points in our last home game of the season. Oct. 30 proved to be a big day for the locals as they won their first game of the season and were doubly elated because it was their first in the Tri- State Junior College Conference. This was Poto- mac's first victory since the next-to-last game of the 1964 season. Five different men carried the ball into paydirt for State as they rolled over Harford College by a score of 40-0. In the final game, the Cats went down before Baltimore Junior College, 14-0 on Nov. 6. The 99-69 final score found the Cats on the short end of this non-confer- ence tilt. On Dec. 4, the Loughmen made their home debut and won their first conference game. In this battle with Catonsville, the locals won 92-84. The Cats invaded the Altoona College hardcourt on Dec. 8 with a strong attack spearheaded by Tom Condron and Bill Thomas and came off with a 96-85 triumph. The locals continued their streak as they rolled to a 80-66 win over the Trojans of Allegany Commun- ity College, Dec. 13. The Cats were down 6 points at the half but caught fire and moved into the lead to stay. The Cats began a three game road jaunt by play- ing St. Mary's College on Dec. 16, and pulled off a 77-60 triumph. Victory once again came to the locals on Dec. 17, as they continued their winning ways by knocking off Charles College 88-53. Action picked up in the second period and the Cats coasted to their fifth straight win of six games. The locals wrapped up the successful road trip by thrashing Prince George College to the tune of 114-73. The Christmas break found the Cats in pos- session of a perfect 5-0 conference log and an im- pressive 6-1 overall. Putting their six game win streak on the line, the locals came through in fine form, beating Johns- town Junior College, 78-66, Jan. 6, on the local floor. The Cats were visited by Altoona College on Jan. 15, and sent the Pennsylvanians home with a 107-78 defeat. The Catamounts scored their sixth Tri-State Con- ference victory on Jan. 21, when they hammered the Shenandoah quint 98-89. On Jan. 24, the PS cagers swung into a three day road trip by squeezing by Essex Junior College with a slim margin of 86-84. Each team scored 38 field- goals, but the difference was at the charity stripe when the Cats got the extra edge. - The Catamount cagers won their eleventh straight victory and boosted their conference record to 8-0 by downing Harford Junior College 106-81 on the latter's hardwood on Jan. 25. Bainbridge Navv- Academy fell victim of the Cat- amounts on Jan. 26, on the Middies court. The local cagers came from behind in a close battle to pre- serve the winning streakg with a 67-65 final tally. Jan. 29 was a black night when the Cats dropped an 86-78 decision to York Junior College before a sellout crowd. This marked the first loss for the PS quint since their first game of the season, and ended the long, hard fought 12 game streak. Wesley College of Dover, Del., proved too much for the Catamounts as they fell to the tenth ranked junior college team in the nation on Feb. 4, by a score of 106-78. The Cats had their claws clipped for the third consecutive time on Feb. 5, at Hagerstown, Md., by a score of 107-85. Potomac State came back in the second half to outscore the opponents, but it was not enough for victory. On February 8, the Loughmen ventured to the rival city of Cumberland for a return match with the Trojans of Allegany Community College. The lo- cals who opened the game with a fine floor perform- ance, were up-ended-by a score of 99-90. Montgomery Junior College handed the Cats quint their fifth loss in a row on Feb. 11 in the PS gym- nasium by the score of 98-93. Potomac kept pace with the visitors on field goals, but the difference came at the foul line. Cn Feb. 15, the Cats won their second game of the season from the Shenandoah quint as they de- feated them 93-71. Two days later, the PS five traveled to York, Pa., only to suffer a 79-66 setback from the Pennsylvanians. In the final regular season game of the year the Catamounts played a brilliant second half to over- come a 23 point half-time deficit and defeated Bal- timore 89-83. In the tournament elimination game, Potomac State lost to Hagerstown, 99-91. We hope the visible memories that make up this twenty-eighth edition will find a special spot on your bookshelf. To one who is not familiar with the planning, pre- paration and labor that are necessary to produce a college yearbook, the task may seem quite simple. Actually, long hours of planning and work are in- volved. This year's Catamount began in April of last year with the conception of the first dozen pages that make up the opening. After the ideas had germi- nated through the summer months, the work began in earnest at Fall registration with the taking of student and faculty photographs and the sale of yearbooks. The editorial, business, and typing staffs then performed their respective tasks to make this yearbook a success. This book is successful only if it aids you in re- calling your hours of study, in class and outg the extra-curricular activities in which you participatedg the special events and features of the yearg and the friendships which grew on this campus. The staff of the 1966 Catamount sincerely hopes that this yearbook will do all these things. CATAMOUNT STAFF Editor ............. ......................... ..... J a mes A. Its distinctive name, chosen in 1921, derives from the name of an ancient Greek statue, still extant in the city of Rome, which became a talking statue when people posted on it their comments on current affairs. They named the statue Pasquino about 1500 B.C. in honor of a deceased hunchbacked tailor by that name respected for his biting and amusing sarcasm. The staff of the Pasquino includes all stu- dents registered in journalism courses and a num- ber of volunteers. The newspaper has an average press run of 2,250 copies. Students' activity fees entitle them to re- 48 ceive the paper. Approximately 1,200 copies con- stitute the mailing list, which includes the sending of copies to parents of non-commuting students, alumni, numerous high schools and colleges both in and out of state, and to others interested in the college. Potomac State's journalism majors are enabled to have a rich practical experience not only in writing for the newspaper but in makeup, as they are pre- mitted in theucomposing room to assist when the Pasquino is prepared for printing at the News-Tri- bune plant. The Pasquino sponsors annually the publication and sale of a Student-Faculty Directory. Each spring the staff has a Press Banquet, at which the guest speaker is invited from the ranks of the Fourth Estate. Q6IJ.S!0d!0 Q14 A ' PASQUINO STAFF Editor ...... ......... L inda R. The objective of the Fraternity are to stimulate a high school spirit, to develop a close feeling of friendship among its members, to build moral character, to promote top scholar- ship, and to strengthen Potomac State College. Theta Sigma Chi Fraternity participates in many of the campus activities. In the early fall season it conducted the election, donat- ed the roses, and aided in the ceremony for the Homecoming Queen, Miss Catamount, and her court, and also sponsored a float in the annual Homecoming Parade, titled from a famous quote of Wins- ton Churchill, . . . blood, sweat, and tears, which displayed the effort of the Potomac State College football players. Later in the fall, Thetas, along with their sister sorority, sponsored the only Greek letter dance of the season. The Harvest Swing, which honor- ed Richard Cauffiel as King. Other fraternity functions includ- ed informal parties, two rush parties for the pledges, and several swimming and picnic outings in the warmer seasons of the college year. Theta Sigma Chi holds the honor of the highest scholastic average of a Greek Letter fraternities for the 1964-65 school year, and has several of its members in various governing bodies on campus. Theta Sigma Chi proudly serves and honors Potomac State Col- lege. Earl Griffith President 79 . , 3 S iiraiii P '- W Hd, . - i ' QQ U X ,P J fi 1s , Qt '? ' 4' QQ s is 1-L, GX ',:. The objectives of the sorority are to further scholarship, to promote high moral standards, to stimulate school spirit, and to develop a close feeling of friendship among its members and loyalty for Potomac State College. Activities for 1965-66 began with informal gatherings at the home of Miss Anne Withers. The rush party was combination of formal and informal activities held in Davis Hall Lounge and the college cafeteriag a circus theme was followed. Kappa Delta Psi and the brother fraternity, Phi Kappa Omega, received a first place award for the float entered in the Homecoming Parade with the theme, We will bury you. In October the sorority held a mixer for the brother fraternity. The sisters in the sorority bought clothing and food for a family in the Keyser area. Because the patronesses of the sorority have been most helpful, a Christ- mas Party was planned in their honor. Kappa Delta Psi and Phi Kappa Omega helped co-sponsor the first Panhellenic Christmas Dance. As the Christmas season came to a close, the melodic voices of the Kappa sisters were heard singing Christmas Carols on the campus. The sorority sisters went as a group to help cheer the basketball team on to a Winning season. In the spring a Silver Tea was held in the Home Economics Department. Each person attend- ing contributed silver coins which were used for a worthy cause. A Games Day was held for the entire student body in April. Sigma Iota Chi stands for unity, love, and truth. In the early fall, the returning Sigmas began the year with an informal Weiner roast at the park. In October, the Sigmas had a successful semi-formal rush party at the Heritage House, which brought 28 pledges into the sorority. In early November, an in- formal get acquainted party was held with Phi Sigma Nu Fra- ternity. Also in November a joint hayride with the Phi Sigs was held. A Sigma Salute Day was held on which We saluted the 1965 Catamount football squad by having each girl Wear a player's number and name. On the 12th of February, Sigma Iota Chi and Phi Sigma Nu jointly sponsored the annual Sigma Sweetheart Ball. The fraternity holds member- ship in the National College Panhellanic and is designated as Beta Chapter of the National Phi Sigma Nu Fraternity. Phi Sigma Nu began a successful year by entering a float in the Homecoming parade. The float was selected for a first prize. Shortly after Homecoming an informal rush party was held for prospective pledges. Refreshments and entertainment were pro- vided, and the party brought seventeen pledges to the fraternity. With the cooperation of its sister sorority, Sigma Iota Chi, the fraternity held a highly successful hayride on November 19. At the Sigma Christmas Dance held December 11, Paula Cuff and Brother John Crane were among the royalty. On February 12, the fraternity and sorority jointly sponsored the traditional Sweet- heart Ball. Throughout the year, the fraternity held a number of informal parties, entertaining the pledges, the Sigma Iota Chi members and others. At the end of the year, the annual fraternity picnic was held with the sister sorority, and the annual banquet honoring the sophomore members of the fraternity closed out the season's activities. Phi Sigma Nu demands high moral standards, individual develop- ment of character, leadership, and scholastic achievement of its members as well as loyalty and support for the college. These qualities are exemplified by the following brothers who hold high campus positions: Steve Smith, President of the Student Body and ROTC Cadet Battalion Commander: and Lee Martin, Presi- dent of the Freshman Class.
