He was a dedicated teacher motivated by the highest ideals. A true friend and a wise counselor of 73 youth. A conscientious, able, and very cooperative administrator. A proud citizen Will- ingly accepting more than his share of re- sponsibility for the welfare of his church, his community, and his country. A devoted husband. A Christian gentleman always serving beyond the call of duty. DEAN KIRKLAND SHEPHERD McKEE DEDICATIO This was KIRKLAND SHEPHERD McKEE Dean PoToMAc STATE COLLEGE 1936 - 1963 Died, May zo, 1963 14 ADM1N1STRAT1oN mounw DR. ERNEST E. CHURCH yjfeszknf Potomac State College has not been concerned, throughout its sixty-three year history, in empire building. Its future will not be characterized by such ambitions. The goal of the college has always been the maximum development of its students-to promote intellectual, physical, social and spiritual growth. We strive to take the siblings sent to us by fathers and mothers and release them into the maelstrom of life equipped to play well their part as mature and responsible citizens. We advance toward this goal only as our total facili- ties-physical equipment, dedicated faculty, ambitious and high minded students, organizations and activities -are made responsive to the challenge of these exciting times. Act well your part There all the honor lies. 40 - we -ui.. While there are various criteria for Judging the qual- ity of an educational institution, for most persons a college is evaluated on the basis of the performance and qualities of its students and graduates. During your time at Potomac State, you have been the beneficiaries of the hard work and sympathetic in- terest of the faculty. It is time now to test the merit of these efforts. Your accomplishments in the years ahead in the professions, in business, as students, and as citi- zens will determine what View others will have of you and your college. Those of us who remain here hope that your profiles of achievement Will be Worthy of your talents and the endeavors of all who comprise the college staff. MR. TODD H. BULLARD CDQCUQ 16 MR. DAVID G. NUZUM Director of CSXUOQJQZZ fjqfygzkfs Profiles, silhouettes, and shadows are words rich in connotation. The child is intrigued that he cannot jump over his shadow. The youth is amused with the nuance implicit in the Witticism ,UA man has a profile 3 a woman has a silhouette. The scholar probes for exactitude among synonyms, noting that words employ two di- mentions of height and width, and leaving to imagina- tion the limitless potential of depth. Profile suggests that some areas are unseen or un- known or undeveloped. The unidentified attributes of the team suggest integrity, a quality that is not expen- sive g it is priceless. Academic acumen must walk with probity of charac- ter in those who accept the noble ideal of American forebears who pledged our sacred honor . Profiles of Potomac State's sons and daughters will be developed into sculptures-in-relief through dedication: the student to the quest for truth, the professor to maximum student development and the administrator to purity of purpose. The pursuit of an education is a challenge to everyone offered the opportunity to develop his mind, his body, and his spirit to the fullest of his capacity. The ex- perience of a college education presents an occasion to improve in every phase of learning. It is important that youth realize the values created for them as members of society and as individuals which a college education offers today and for the future in this World of rapid change. The desirable result derived from the experience is that one develops so that he can live a happy and useful life personally and in his service to society. He should expand his world of knowledge and understanding through an appreciation of the best which is offered in literature, in music, and in the arts. Congratulations are presented to the Catamount staff who have given of their time and talents to record these interesting profiles of the educational opportunities of- fered at Potomac State College. After storing away the paraphernalia necessary for the next year at Potomac State, allowances collected, and final farewells bid, misty- eyes freshmen watched the family car speed away. Others showed little, if any, grief at all as they tried to conquer the campus in grand style, only to be confronted by authori- ties known as freshmen guides, who herded them off to one meeting after another. Only after attending convocations, taking tests, walking around flower beds, meeting strange faces, learning school yells and cheers, and standing in one line after another could the bewildered freshmen proudly consider themselves a part of Potomac State College. Lough's Catamounts compiled a 1-7 record in the 1963 campaign as the Blue and Gold were victorious only over Ferrum College. Potomac State opened their season by playing host to Bainbridge Naval Academy who downed the locals 6-0 in a contest played on Stayman Field in a steady drizzle. The Loughmen were dealt their second set back of the season 26-20 at the hands of Chowan College of Murfreesboro, N. C. Bob Diaco, Dave Whitzell, Dave Lawson scored for State while Nick Lapcevic converted for two extra points. The Cats hit the road for the first time to battle their arch rival Shepherd College where they Went down in defeat 21-12 after a hard fought battle with the always powerful Rams. Returning to Stayman Field, the Potomac State eleven moved into the winner's circle for the first and last time with a 20-0 decision over the Ferrum College Panthers of Roanoke, Va. This victory marked Coach Louglfs 100th collegiate football win at Potomac State. f 1 4 v' What Decision Will Those Referees Make? Unable to add another win, the Catamounts bowed 26-20 to Montgomery College in another close tilt at Takoma Park, Md. Like many of their frays this year, this battle could have gone either way. Homecoming celebration was marred by a 58-13 shellacking at the hands of Wesley Wolverines of Dover, Del., marking the Loughmen's fifth loss of the season. This is one of the worst trompings that Catamount fans can recall for many years. Facing another major rival, Frostburg College, of nearby Frostburg, Md., the Blue and Gold managed a 7-6 halftime lead, but were overcome 20-7 by the Bobcat's second-half scoring drive. In the season's finale, the Cats dropped a heart- breaking squeaker 14-13 to the Baltimore Junior College Red Devils, another conference foe. Garnering scoring honors for the Cats this year was end Bob Thorne with 24 points on four TD's, followed by quarterback Burt Holcomb and halfback Bob Diaco, each with 18 tallies. f9 11 f-fffvf-mlur-1 N First row: L. to R.: Bill Barclift, mgr., Dan Conley, Harold Cox, Tom Baber, Francis Coda, Robert Bays, Vito Galati, Philip Gaujot, Roy Throne, Roger Keys, Mike Morozowich, Mike Kalinyak. Vet- eran hoopsters for the Gold and Blue were Don Har- mon, Dave Lawson, Donnie Shields, and Courtland Smith. Starting the '63 campaign with a bang, the Lough- men defeated Hagerstown Junior College 78-62 on the local hardwoods on November 30. With one game past the boards, the Cats were dealt their initial loss of the season 95-85 at the hands of Johnstown on the Pennsylvanians' court. The Cats sought re.venge for this loss as they romped over Altoona 93-72 on December 6. With a 2-1 record the Loughmen eked out a 68- 64 win over the Frostburg Bobcats in a come-from- behind thriller before the local crowds. On Decem- ber 13 the Potomac five traveled to Charles College where they decisioned the Marylanders 85-75. In the same road trip, the Cats extended their winning streak by downing Prince George 75-67. Allegany Community College dealt the Blue and Gold their second defeat of the season in a 105-101 setback in overtime in Cumberland, Maryland. In the first game of the new year, the Cats handed the visiting Cagers of Johnstown an 86-64 loss on Jan- uary 10 to avenge an earlier setback. With a 6-2 record on the line, the locals journeyed to Shepherdstown on January 14 where they dropped a 98-86 decision to their arch rivals, the Rams. In the first game of a twin-bill at home on January 17, the locals delivered a 94-65 loss to Catonsville College. The following night at Cumberland, Mary- land, in another double-header, the locals shot at a .469 clip to wallop the visiting Ann Arundel quint 102-61. Following a five-day break, the Catamounts played host to undefeated Allegany College and com- pete.ly outplayed them for a 104-77 victory, and avenged the heartbreaker at the hands of the Tor- j ans earlier in the season. Opening a two-day stand in Pittsburgh, January 24, State suffered an 86-70 setback to Robert Morris College. State's second loss in as many days came at the hands of Point Park College, January 25, to the tune of 70-62. The. Catamounts netted disaster again, when Bain- bridge Naval Academy handed the Loughmen a 65- 56 loss on January 30 for the locals' third straight setback on opponents courts. Snapping their losing streak, the local five gave Harford College of Bel Air, Maryland, a 100-74 dubbing with 12 PSC' hoop- sters hitting the scoring column. Remaining on the road, the Cats met Essex College on February 1, where they outclassed their rivals 93-47. In their busiest week on the season's schedule. the Catamounts got off to a bad start receiving a 6-1-42 shellacking from the Shepherd College Rams. This marked the Cats' first loss on home courts in seven outings. Hosting undefeated Wesley College of Dov- er, Delaware, the following night, Potomac State lost its chance to tie the conference leaders when the Delawareans squeaked out a 93-89 decision in the nip and tuck match. Traveling to Altoona, Pennsylvania, on February 7, the Potomac team dumpe.d the Keystone cagers 77-60. This win brought the Cats' slate to 12-8. The locals suffered their ninth lo'ss of the season Febru- ary 8, on the local hardwoods as the Montgomery Black Knights bombed the Potomac quint 95-68 in State's only afternoon tilt on the schedule. On February 11, the Cats tromped Shenandoah 112-88 on the home court in the only meeting be- tween the two schools this year. In the same week, the Loughmen traveled to Frostburg, Maryland. to tangle with the Bobcats, and made a sweep of the two-game season series by clawing the Marylanders 96-89. In the Cats final appearance before the local fans in '64, they dumped visiting Baltimore Junior Col- lege 101-87, marking the sixth time this season that the Loughmen went over the one hundred score. In the season's finale, the PSC cagers eked out an 83- 82 decision over Hagerstown fMd.l College in the Hub City. This win put State's over-all log at 16-9 and their conference tally at 11-3. The 1963-64 basketball campaign ended in an abrupt stop on February 21 when the Cats were halted in the first round of the Tri-State Junior College Tournament in Dover. Delaware, by Balti- more Junior College 79-60. The Red Devils thus avenged a week-old loss dealt them by the Cats. and shattered State's tournament hopes. ll ll 1 ' Q 2 1 l , Q , . 5 l 5 1 Q 3 S E 1 35'-f 1 - 'gli Y z- -' ,ffw 6 , Q. , 'Aqvilg , .U fury ff . The planning of the book is begun one year in advance with the selection of the staff. Culiminating with the final editing and proofreading and distribu- ting of the books, the cycle is ready for repetition for another year. Among the pages of the 1964 Cafamozmz' are features depicting campus life. In this yearbook are photographs of two years of striving and achievem- ment. We hope that events recalled and held dear will be of significance to all students. The 1964 Catamount represents many laborious sessions resulting in a single opportunity for success or failure. The staff must be prepared to meet the judgments of the readers once the books is distribut- ed in May. This year's Cata'm.ozm.t is presented to the Student Body with the hope that it has successfully sum- marized a various crossection of campus functions, each representative of the emphasis and influence of our Alma Mater. The purpose of this sorority is to perfect and carry out, in one's every-day life, the meaning of sisterhood, to be forgetful of self and mindful of others, and to reach the highest standards possible, mentally, morally, and physically. Epsilon Chapter's annual rush party was held to the Upper Potomac Country Club, Burlington. Following the distribution of bids, Sigma receive.d 24 pledges. Carrying out the sorority's local project, the members contributed a basket of food to a needy fami- ly at Christmas and made a donation to an orphanage in Virginia. Miss Nancy Manning was the Sigma candidate for Homecoming Queen. Reigining over the Christmas Ball, sponsored jointly with Phi Sigma Nu fraternity, was Queen Molly Handlan. ln February. The fraternity was granted a charter by the National College Panhellenic and is designated Beta Chapter. Phi Sigma Nu began the year with a successful and enteraining pledge party during the fall Rush Week which ultimately brought to the fraternity some forty pledges. In the fall activities on the campus of the college, Phi Sigma Nu tied for first place in the float building competition of the Homecoming weekend. The annual and traditional Christmas Ball sponsored by the fra- ternity and the sister sorority was as usual a distinguished social e.vent on the campus, with Brother Jim Evans reigning as King of Winter with Molly Handlan, elected by the brothers from their sister sorority, as his Queen, In February. the brothers elected Sister Pat Harness to be their Queen at the Sweetheart Ball. It was an honor for the fraternity and the sorority to have their SWee.theart Ball in the newly constructed Student Union of Potom- ac State College. Phi Sigma Nu held a number of very informal parties during the year, entertaining the pledges. members of the Sigma Iota Chi Sorority and others. The fraternity also was well represented in all campus activities and developed a series of programs for the benefit of the members. At the end of the year a fraternity picnic was held. and the annual banquet honoring the sophomore members of the fraternity which closed out the year's activities. Or- ganized to foster scholarship and campus citizenship, it ever strives to uphold the ideals of its founders. It is still a local fraternity with its own constitution, ritual, insignia, and traditions. Certain functions of the academic year are associ- ated with Sigma Phi Omega. As the society draws its membership from all campus groups, it IS proper that it should sponsor the two convocations honor- ing Potomac State's organizations. This year at the KNOW YOUR ORGANIZATIONS Convocation held shortly after the beginning of the college year, Sig- ma Phi Omega again directed the presentation of the campus organizations and their leaders to the freshmen and described the history and objective.s of each group. In the spring it will sponsor the an- nual RECOGNITION DAY Convocation, on which occasion honor is bestowed upon leadership and achievement in every field of college life. The formal initiation of new members and the banquet honoring them and their parents have an important place on the school calendar. Members of Sigma Phi Omega feel that it is not only an honor to be elected to this society, but that it is also a responsibility. They aim to uphold the standards of scholarship, to participate in student activities, and to co-operate with the. college at all times.
