Church PRESIDENT One hundred years ago, out of the distress and bitterness of civil strife, West Virginia became the thirty-fifth state to be admitted to the Union. Nineteen hundred sixty-three marks one hundred years of growth and development from infancy to the full stature of statehood! Prob- ably the greatest force in this development has been the contribution of our schools, colleges, and universities, for without an enlightened citizenry there cannot be a progressive and en- lightened state. Potomac State, as a member of the family of colleges, salutes West Virginia in this centennial year. Even as THE CATA- MOUNT strives for greater excellence each year, so the college pledges its best efforts in building a better and a brighter future for the proud We join the State of West Virginia in cele- brating its centennial. As citizens, we will be watching with interest a review of the events which have been responsible for its growth and development. We are assured that the leadership of well trained men and women has been re- sponsible for its status today. Many of these leaders are the product of our educational sys- tem. Potomac State College is proud of her many alumni who have been a part of this develop- ment. She, too, during the past sixty-one years, has grown from a preparatory school to the one and only full fledged junior college in West Virginia which is state supported. Depicted in this 1963 CATAMOUNT are many students who will lead our state tomorrow - Montani Semper Liberi! Mr. Kirkland S. McKee DEAN l6 state of West Virginia. Mr. David G. Nuzum DIRECTOR OF STUDENT AFFAIRS West Virginia's Centennial Year marks a century of progress. The Mountaineer State may be said to have seceded twice: with and from Virginia. West Virginia in 1963, girded for action, promises the nation to exhibit con- tinual, economic and social growth. The sesquicen- tennial birthday of A.D. 2013 prompts the prog- nostication that Potomac State, while remaining a junior college, will have a student body of 3000, the two years of higher education being 'given gratis by the state. The office of Director of Student Affairs, in providing the mortar to stabilize the verities of scholastic endeavor, strives to deepen char- acter integrity and to be the proverbial grind- stone by which students sharpen intellectual, social, and moral judgment. 'Q-vi As we celebrate the centennial of our state and complete the sixty-first year of our college, tri- bute is paid to Women who have contributed to the success of both. Women have had the opportunity of higher education, mainly during this century. College records reveal that they have merited this recog- nition by academic excellence and valuable serv- ice in every phase of college life. Further re- search shows that they have utilized their train- ing effectively in home, community, state, and nation. May West Virginia's motto, Montani Semper Liberi, be the guide for greater achievements by Potomac State women as they strive to meet the responsibilities which accompany freedom. Dr. K. A Welcome committee greeted the student upon his arrival on campus and helped him to locate his quarters in the dormitory. Tradi- tions were explained, and Freshmen Rules were inaugurated. In order to raise funds for athletic awards the Council sponsored the Homecoming Dance and the May Day Ball. It prepared and sold printed programs for ,, Pg. The Council provided guides and escorts on Parents Day in the fall. Students look to the governing body to serve as a liaison between them and the faculty. Suggestions for making campus life more attractive originate with the Council and are taken to the college administration for final approval. 5 X , .px , Q 5 5 'x David W. In November the annual Harvest Swing, with a unique motif of a Japanese autumn, was sponsored by the Gammas and their brother fraternity, Theta Sigma Chi. In December, the Gammas exchanged gifts and were hos- tesses of the Christmas party given for the Thetas in the Davis Hall Lounge. In February the members sponsored a . . . . .Gail Colyard . . . . . .Hilda Loy . . . .Jodie Perrine . . . .Mary Jenkins Welcome Back to Second Semester dance, with proceeds going to the Biennial Conclave fund. Players, organized in 1919 on the Potomac State College campus, holds the distinction of being the oldest cultural organization at Potomac State. Whether they have been members of the National Thespian Society in high school, or are just becoming inter- ested in dramatics, the members of Players receive training in every aspect of the the- ater, from acting to set construction, lighting techniques and the art of stage make-up. This year, in addition to the annual Spring production of a three-act play, the Players presented a one-act comedy, Hold Everything, in the early Weeks of the second semester. In contrast to the light air of their Winter pro- duction, the group chose Richard Reich's A House Without Windows, a mystery-drama, for their three-act, Spring presentation. Membership in Delta Psi Omega, national dramatic honorary society, is awarded each year to members of Players who have done outstanding work, and have made valuable contributions to the organization. Election to the society is not automatic, however, up- on the accumulation of the one hundred points necessary for consideration, candi- dates must meet local and national require- ments for election, as Delta Psi Omega is a fraternity which gives recognition only to members of dramatic organizations who excel in the theater. oFF1cERs fp' i i President ..... .............. . ..
