I l OREWCDRD When you made your first appearance at Potomac State College many of you were not only entering college, but were for the first time living away from home and facing the challenge of becoming adult and inde- pendent. You were experiencing a new chapter of life, which was a big step for you. Through this past year, however, you have changed. You have grown older, wiser, and have prepared to face and accept the responsibilities of tomorrow. In the pages of this book we hope you will find reflected some measure of the meaning of your college days at Potomac State College, and in the future, when you reread the pages of this book, we hope that the college days of planning, striving, and growing will have become memorable days with even greater significance. I3 . s Professor Walter A. Jaworek DEDICATION It is with deep admiration and appreciation that we, the CATAMGUNT staff and the student body, dedicate this 1962 edition of the CATAMOUNT to Walter A. Jaworek, who for twenty years has been teacher, friend, and counselor to students at Potomac State College. Professor Javvorek, besides being a member of the West Virginia Society of Professional Engineers, is also advisor of the campus Engineers Club and sponsors many activities in behalf of the engineers of tomorrow. But, more than this, he has proudly served as guide and teacher to all students with whom he comes in contact. Again, Professor Jaworek, We are proud to say - this is your book. .X N1 94 QS M 1-1! ' ' , , To meet the ever-increasing challenge of the future, Potomac State College has pro- vided for selective admissions, a program of guidance, new courses, and the development of methods leading to excellence in teaching. You are reminded that, as a student, you should accept your share of the responsibil- ity to prepare yourself for the challenge of the future. Remember that it is in this fu- ture that you will be spending the rest of your life. This edition of the Catamount will be a constant reminder of the efforts which you have put forth thus far in meeting this challenge. DEAN Mr. Kirkland S. McKee POTOMAC STATE COLLEGE 1902-1962 Sixty years of growth and development! The students of that first year, 1902, lived and worked in a world that seems in retro- spect almost unreal. They were a part of a campus of only one building. But many from that year and the succeeding years went on to help mightily in building the campus and the world of 1962. Truly the past is only prologue. We congratulate The CATAMOUNT for its part in depicting The Potomac State of today and tomorrow. PRESIDENT Dr. Ernest E. Its formation was deemed necessary in order that a closer relationship between the administration and the student body could exist. Although the council's main objectives are of the administrative nature, it also promotes school spirit and fellowship. Throughout the school year, the Council promoted many important events. During Freshman Week, it assisted in the orienta- tion program for the incoming freshman, and later organized the Freshman Class. Rules and regulations for the freshmen students were made and enforced by the Kangaroo Court under the direction of the Council. As football season arrived, the Council super- vised the s e l e c t i o n of cheerleaders, held thuses and sold programs for the football games. Two gala affairs of the campus, the Home- coming Dance and the May Day Ball, were sponsored by the council. Upon recommendation of the athletic de- partment, the Council presented letters and sweaters to athletes and cheerleaders. The Student Council also purchased new uniforms for the cheerleaders. In association with the Director of Stu- dent Affairs, the Council sponsored movies and various informal dances throughout the year. These social functions were for the benefit of the student body 'as a whole. Joe Pugh and Robert Shaw led the Gold and Blue as the duo picked up 175 yards to a total of 95 for the Middies. Other six pointers were scored by Harry Wilson, Hank Cleary, and Mike Melody. GlenVille's Pioneers handed the Cats their first loss of the campaign by a 39-20 count. Although Potomac State led throughout the first half, they couldn't stop the determined Pioneers in the later stages of the WVIAC contest. For the second Week in a row the Loughmen met defeat. This time at the hands of Salem College by a score of 25-0. The visiting Tigers could not be caged as they amassed 259 yards to 135 for the Cats. Arch-rival Shepherd College handed the Catamounts their next loss by blanking Potomac State 32-0. The charges of Coach Lough were hindered throughout the game by injuries to key players. The Catamounts roared back into the Win column as they handed Davis 81 Elkins a 13-0 defeat in the Homecoming tilt. Joe Pugh scored twice as the Gold and Blue completely dominated the game. Montgomery Junior College ended Potomac State's three season Win streak in the Tri-State Conference as they scored in the last few minutes to gain a 7-6 Win. Bill Kennedy chalked up the only Cat score in the mud-marred contest. The win column was again crashed by the Catamounts. This time three victories in a row sent the Loughmen over the .500 mark. Potomac State topped Wesley and Baltimore by scores of 20-13- and 27-7, respectively, and came from behind to edge a much larger Frostburg team 19-13 end- ing the 1961 football season.
