FOREWORD Our world, at Potomac State College, is a small world of education within the larger world, and this 1961 edition of the Catamount attempts within the pages of this book to portray our smaller world by representing the people, the activities, and the classes that make up our campus. These pages represent a treasure oimemories for now and the years to come. We hope as our students strive to make the world moie meaningful, they will from time to time look within the pages of this book and remember--with pride--the experiences and achieve ments at Potomac State College that enabled them to strive for and reach higher goals. We are indebted to the members of the staff and sponsors of the Catamoulg whichportrays so vividly our membership in this world. Mr Kirkland S. The fraternity was granted a National Charter by the National Col- lege Panhellenic and has been designated Beta Chapter. The fraternity began its yearwith a successfulpledge party during the fall Rush Week, which netted them several members. In the autumn activities the fraternityisponsored the winning candidate for Miss Homecoming. The annual Christmas Ball, which is sponsored by Phi Sigma Nu, is the biggest project undertaken by the fraternity, and this year'sdance was an outstanding affair. Ronald Hoover reigned as King of Winter at the Ball. In Feb- ruary, Richard Smith was chosen to reign as King at the Sigma sponsored Sweetheart Ball. Phi Sigma Nu has sponsored several social get-togethers with its sister sorority, Sigma Iota Chi, the most popular of these being frequent square dances, with Sponsor James T. Handlan acting as caller. Phi Sigma Nu participates in all organized campus activities. Many diverse programs have been presented by and for the me mbe r s . The Fraternity prides itself in having many of its members holding responsible positions as officers and leaders in campus organizations. The Phi Sigma Nu Fraternity demands college spirit, interest in all college activities, high moral standards, individual development of character and leadership, and scholastic achievement from all its members. Men who are now away from the college but often return to visit their old fraternity are indications of the fact that the bonds of fr i e nd ship established in Phi Sigma Nu provide lasting memories in future years. This fraternity is an international drama honorary one for students in Junior colleges. Member- ship in the fraternity is a reward for excellent ability and participation in various phases of dramatic arts. Furthermore, membership in Delta Psi Omega makes one eligible for membership in Alpha Psi Omega, on the four year college level. The objectives of the society are to promote the dramatic arts on the campus and to aid dramatics clubs such as the Potomac State Players. The Potomac State cast, number 110, was instituted in 1954. Students are selected for membership on a point basis. One hundred points must be ac- cumulated by work in some phase of dramatics before the individual may be considered for membership. Election to the society, however, is not automatic, candidates must satisfy both national and local requirements for election. Delta Psi Omega does not exist as a replacement for dramatic clubs, but is rather a fraternity to give recognition to members of such organizations who excel in this field. 3 5 , ' I A I 1 , ,,,,,,NMmm' . ,I inyvnf-q,,. .4 if l la--M-7-Th' , h A 4 9 uw w, ,K , n Ill POTOMAC STATE PLAYERS Wah fl Aa I A - , . 5 if Q ,. Horse Lough, ended their 1960 football season with a 5-4 slate, even though the Cats lost the first three contests of the campaign. The Bainbridge Naval Academy whipped the Loughmen at their own game in the season lidlifter, played on a sloppy Stayman Field, by a decisive 28-12 margin. Hank Cleary, State quarter- back was caught inthe end- zone early inthe first period for the first Napster score, thus giving the Middies a 2-0 edge. Potomac scored on two pass plays, but only led Bainbridge once late in the first stanza by a 6-2 score. Defeat was handed to the Cats again the following weekend, when the Pioneers of Glenville College downed them 20-13. Glenville scoredtwice onpasses and once on the groundto chalk up the WVIAC victory. The Potomac aggregation suffered defeat at the hands of Salem College under the lights of the West Union Stadium, 19-2. De- spite the loss, State' s defense led by Hank and Larry Itri and Carl Gentile turned in an outstanding performance. The all time rivals of Potomac State, Shepherd College, foiled the 1960 Homecoming procedures by handing the Cats a 7-0 heart- breaking loss. During the latter part of the season, it was dis- closed that the Ram defensive contained an ineligible player and the contest was forfeited to Potomac. The win column was at last dented when the Cats took Davis Sz Elkins to the woodshedfor a 23-0 blanking. This was the first of three consecutive victories forthe Loughmen as they went on to defeat Montgomery, and Wesley in as many contests. Robert Farr, Hank Cleary, Hank Itri, and Bill Kennedy were standouts for the Cats on both defense and offense during the shortlived winning streak. Concord College foiled the continuation of the State winning seige as they overpowered the Blue and Gold in the next contest 14-7. The Catamountsfought back aggresivelyin the next con- test by winning the season windup from Baltimore 20-7. 114 ,,.....,.,,. ax A x V rx W x . X V. . 1' ' . I X . The Cats, under the tutorship of Coach Dana G. Horse Lough, cinched the Tri-State title after elimi- nating Catonsville 7 9- 69 in the first round, dropping Montgomery 79-59 in the second stanza, and whipping Shenandoah 107-79 dur- ing the final contest. The victory gave Potomac State aberth at the Region XV Finals held in Binghampton, New York. The Catamounts dropped the first two games of the season to Fairmont and Salem, 85-56 and 103-62 respectively. Although the charges of Coach Lough wentinto the contests with only three defeats in their last thirty games, the opponents, playing in front of home crowds, jumped off to early leads that were never headed throughout the contests. Frostburg State was the first victim of the Cats as they fell to the locals, led by John Allen and Mike Checkan who bombed in 21 and 20 points respectively, to spark the 71-58 victory. Two defeats, by the WVU Frosh and Davis and Elkins, followed before the Cats hit the win column by downing seven straight foes to give the Loughmen an impressive 8-5 early season record. The teams falling to the Blue and Gold during this sudden surge of victories were: Hagerstown and St. Mary's Colleges twice, Altoona, Shepherd and Prince Georges' College. Montgomery and Fairmont State foiled the long winning streak by handing the Cats two consecutive loses in Tri-State loses in Tri-State and WVIAC competition. Due to adverse weather conditions, the c onte sts between Potomac and West Liberty, Wheeling, and Altoona Colleges were postponed and were not re-scheduled. The Cats swept the series with Johnstown College, whipping the Pennsylvanians 82-77 on their floor and ending the regular season against them dealing out and 83-68 deluge. The contest that will always be remembered on the PSC campus was the return match with the WVU Freshmen. Stan Shingleton led the Cats throughout the game with 19 tallies and did everything but stand on his head to stop the lofty Frosh who ended up edging the Cats 70-69. The Cats endedtheir regular season by whipping Frostburgin areturn match 87-81, loosing to Shepherd 78-71, and taking three out of four on a long road trip, falling only to Bainbridge Prep while adding Wesley, Baltimore, and Catonsville to the victory sheet. ll6 Tri-State Tournaments Feb. 24-25 lst Round . .
