The aims of the sorority are to promote scholarship, to stimulate school spirit, and to enrich and broaden friendship. ln October a Progressive Pirate Rush Party was held. During the year the Gammas cosponsored two dances, the Harvest Swing and the Spring Formal, with their brother fraternity, Theta Sigma Chi. Mary Ann Leyland was chosen as the Potomac State Campus Cover Girl. The sorority sponsored bake sales, a card party, a rummage sale, sold Potomac State pennants, and sold hot dogs in Reynolds Hall throughout the year. Canned food was distributed to the needy at Christmas through a local church. The group assisted the Crippled Childrens Society at Easter. The climax of the year was the annual spring banquet held in honor of the departing sophomores and the ioint picnic with the Thetas. Its objectives are to further scholarship, to stimulate school spirit, to promote high moral standards, and to develop a close feeling of friendship among its members and a loyalty to the college which is its founding place. As a result of an infarmal Hobo Party held during Rush XVeelt at the Blue lay, twenty-seven girls plsdged Kappa. Following a campus-wide election, Bonnie Tallman reigned as Miss Catamount XVIII during the IIomecoming festivities in October. Miss Mary Virginia Selario was chosen Sophomore Belle and Miss Ioan Harris was chosen Freshman Belle by vote of the student body. Miss Barbara Haines represented the sorority as ROTC Sponsor. Seven sophomores are members of Sigma Phi Omega. The Cheering Squad is composed of four Kappa girls, Lois Ellen Rucker, lean Thompson, VVil1na Shields, and Carole Harper. For the past two years, the sorority has been presented the Deanis Scholastic Citation. A Christmas Party was held in the Science Hall Assembly Room. Mrs. lean CCavel Berry was crowned Queen of Wiiiter at the lingle Bell Hop. Miss joy Wilson was selected Sigma Sweetheartw at the annual Sigma Sweetheart Ball in February. Miss Margie Guididas was chosen by the faculty to represent Potomac State College as a Princess in the Apple Blossom Festival in VVinchester. The Queen's float, sponsored by the fraternity, won the award as the most attractive in the Homecoming Parade. A member, George Podelco, was named as an International Trustee of the Circle K Club. During Freshman VW-ek, the Council assisted in the orientation program for the incoming studentsg two weeks later the group helped to organize the Freshman Class, selected freshman rules, and supervised their enforcement through the Kangaroo Court. The Council supervised the selection of cheerleaders, held thuses, and sold programs for the foothall games. Un Uctoher 13, the Student Council sponsored one of the most gala affairs on the campus, the annual Homecoming Ball, honoring Miss Bonnie Tallman as Miss Catamount XVIII. ln May, the Council cooperated with the Physical Education Department in the May Day Fete, which culminated in the May Queens Ball. Upon recommendation of the Athletic Department, the Council presented letters and sweaters to athletes. The Council sponsored a Student Center dance in the fall and a campus-wide fund drive in December on behalf of Hungarian relief. This year it is the general area of the foreign aid program. During the Hrst semester they debated Shepherd College at Shepherdstown and during the second semester participated in the state tournament at Iackson's Mill. This organization strives to bring Christian youth of Potomac State College into closer contact with the church and to deepen their devotional life through recreation and fellow- ship. Its purpose is to foster the spiritual, intellectual, and social interests of Catholic students, in this order ot importance. This is done to weld them into a common union and to assist their school and its students whenever possible. The group is a member of the National Newman Club Federation and of the Province Federation of West Virginia. The pastor of the Church of the Assumption. which is located on Iames Street in Keyser, is the chaplain of the club. Two instructors of Potomac State College serve the organization in an advisory capacity. At one of the two monthly meetings, a visiting speaker talks to the members in regard to social, political, or religious subjects. Non-members are permitted to attend these meetings, which have for their purpose the constant addition to one's intellectual ability. The purpose of the organization is to acquaint the students with the different fields of engineering. During the fall and winter months hlms are shown semi-monthly, and prominent engineers from nearhy industries are invited to give lectures to the group at monthly meetings held in the auditorium of Science Hall. Informal chats with these practicing engineers take place at the end of the meetings. ln the spring held trips are taken to nearby industries to produce a satisfactory sequence to the professional atmosphere surrounding this important phase of a student engineers college life. Later, the scope of the club was broadened to include students in all Fields ol' science as well as those only slightly interested in science. At this time the name Medisci was coined. The program of the organization included discussions and demonstrations by guest speakers. This year the guest speakers included: Mr. R. E. Whitlach, Mr. I. T. Handlan. Mr. A. K. VanScoy and Mr. W. E. Michael, all members of the faculty. The members of the organization participated in such special projects as a lield trip. clinical techniques that include typing blood. and the selling of packaged pine for Christe mas decorations. In the fall of 1954, a group of agriculture men under the advisorship of Mr. Iohn B. Swecker drew up the constitution and organized the club. Paul Homan was elected president. On Homecoming day, the club held a chick-en barbecue which was enioyed by ap- proximately 450 people, This year the club took a two-day tour to the Agriculture Research Center of Beltsville, Maryland. The group presented the Outstanding Agriculture Student Award to Francis Daniel of Shenandoah Iunction, West Virginia. The organization as- sisted in the Regional F. F. A. The organization aims to develop standards of leadership and sportsmanship and to promote those activities which may be adapted to the leisure time of later school lite. Intramural games are bowling, volleyball, badminton, basketball, and pingpong, among other activities that are ollered. The club is open to all girls on campus. A total of two hundred hfty points entitles a member to an emblem. These points are acquired by participation in tournaments, at- tending meetings, and in various other ways. A total of live hundred points entitles one to wear the regulation Potomac State College letter.
