The aims of the sorority are to promote scholarship, to stimulate school spirit, and to enrich and broaden friendship. ln October the annual formal rush party was held at the home of Dr. Thomas Bess. During the year the Cammas co-sponsored two dances. the Harvest Swing and the Spring Formal with their brother fraternity, Theta Sigma Chi. Miss Elizabeth Vllilmoth was elected Sophomore Belle in the campus wide election in February. The sorority sponsored bake sales throughout the year and also sold Christmas cards and boxed candy during the Yule season. The annual Christmas party was held at the home of Kathryn Burgess. The climax of the year was the annual banquet held by the Gammas to bid farewell to the sophomores and to wish the future sophomores good luck in the coming year. Miss lanet Thayer reigned as Miss Catamountn during the Homecoming festivities in October. Miss loan Marker was selected by the faculty to represent Potomac State College at the Apple Blossom Festival. Although it was originally founded in IQO3 at the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee. as an honor society. it has since become a social organization. This sorority has become the largest national iunior college sorority in the United States and stresses the importance ol' scholastic achievement and fellowship, thus carrying on the spirit and ideals ol' the lirst chapter. The home ol' Mrs. Thad Hullman was the scene ol- the 'Alelawaiian Rush Party. 'Fwentyfthree pledges were received in October and twenty of these were initiated in March. Miss Ioanne Herbert and Mr. Francis Cowatch were crowned Queen and King of Wfinter at the lingle Bell Hop. During Freshman VVeek the Council assisted in the orientation program for the incoming studentsg two weeks later the group helped to organize the freshman class, selected freshman rules. and supervised their enforcement through the Kangaroo Court. The Council supervised the selection of cheerleaders, held thuses, and sold programs for the football games. On October 23, the Student Council sponsored one of the most gala allairs on the campus, the annual Homecoming Ball, honoring Miss Ianet Thayer as Miss Catainount XVI. ln May the Council cooperated with the Physical Education Department in the May LN Day Fete, which culminated in the May Queen's Ball. The first choral group began work in 1926. The lirst activity for 1954-55 was a car float prepared by Singers for the homecoming parade. December found members busily preparing a Christmas cantata entitled The Story of C!Zl'liJ'fl'I7tIS by H. Alexander Matthews. This program was given for the public, the student body and the Rotary Club. The student body and public performances were acf companied by the annual candlelight procession. Soloists were Ruth l-lall, Margaret Griffin, Barbara Bobo, Bernard Mills, Clarence Copeland, Harold Benson and Lloyd Tay- lor. Singers participated in two services of Religious Emphasis week. later presented before local churches. Selections river: The annual Spring tour consisted of concerts presented to various high schools ol' XVest Virginia and Cumberland, Maryland. Activities for 1954-55 concluded with the Baccalaureate Sermon and Commencement exercises. Miss Frances Sarullo accompanied Singers on each public performance. The purpose of the club is to .ipprise the engineering students on the campus of the ditlierent fields of engineering. Practicing engineers are invited to speak to the Engineering Orientation groups during the hrst semester and industrial hlms are secured to depict the engineering vvork in industry. Field trips are arranged to visit nearby industrial plants. The aim of the club is to serve the Freshmen engineer so that he may make an intelligent choice of an engin- eering held. Since the Engineers Club is not a social club, its activities have been somewhat semi- proliessional. The members have participated in some of the campus activities, namely sponsoring a lloat in the Homecoming parade and also a volley ball team in the campus league. The Circle K Club, sponsored by the local Ki- wanis Club, is composed ot college men of high character and scholastic standing who feel that service is something worth-while. The club vvas the lirst of its kind in VVest Virginia. The group is a member of the National Newman Club Fctleration, the Ohio Valley Province, antl the Newman Club Conference of VVest Virginia. Father Henry Stragisher, the assistant pastor of the Church of the Assumption, which is locatetl on Iames Street in Keyser, is the chaplain of the club. Two instructors of Potomac State College serve the organization in an advisory capacity. At one ol the two monthly meetings, a visiting speaker talks to the members in regard to social political or religious subjects. Later, the scope of the club was broadened to include students in all fields of science as well as those students only slightly interested in science. At this time the name Medisci was coined. This year, the cluh seems to have heen relegated to lields ol' medicine hy the establishment of so many clubs dealing with specilic sciences. At the twice monthly meetings, different suhiects were discussed, demonstrated, portrayed, or performed. Among other things, blood typing and urinalysis were demon- strated: heredity was discussed by Mr. Iohn O. Maiden, psychology professor: dillerent types of slides were madeg and a movie concerning the dissection of a doglish was shown. The club holds a charter in the W. Va. Collegiate Academy of Science. As a rule, some members of the cluh attend the annual state meeting ol the VV. Va. Academy along with the local club sponsor. Mr. james T. Beall was organized in the Fall of 1953, to promote the highest ideals of the military prolession. .Xmerican citizenship, leadership, and to recognize the higher degree old military attainment in the Senior RUTC of Potomac State College. This organization was named for Colonel Samuel Roth, who was head olf the VVest Virginia University Army RUTC unit at the time of the founding of RUTH and who is now deceased. The RUTH member is immediately spotted among the ROTC Cadets because ol' his scarlet and white lourragere and distinctive RUTH shoulder patch. The second annual RUTH Military Ball with the Mid-Knighters orchestra and Miss Louise McCord as queen was held March 18th in the Potomac State College gymnasium. The RUTH members enjoyed the lirst Military Banquet April zoth. Displays were placed in the Keyser store windows for the Armed Forces Day. Color Guards were furnished for the home football games. To become a member of the RUTH. one must obtain a average in ROTC and a C average in all courses. To begin the year 1954-55, RUTH had 28 members, 16 were pledged the larst semester and 31 the second semester, making a total of 75 members. RUTH meets monthly on the larst Friday ot the month. SHEPHERD COLLEGE The Shepherd Rams tasted defeat when Potomac State edged by them in a I3-7 vic- tory. Bob Connolly took the pigskin over the line in the first quarter. Shepherd came hack in the third quarter to lead 7-6. In the Final period of play, Connolly heaved a 40- yard pass to Bill Talbott for a first down. After a series of running plays, Ross Mastrean took the hall over an'd kicked the extra point to victory. CONCORD COLLEGE The game was held scoreless during the first half. However, Fairmont rallied in the third quarter for a six point lead. Both of State's touchdowns were scored hy Nick Saulle. The Catamounts were lead by Charlie Felton, Gene Guarilia, and George Morgan with 24, 23, and I9 points respectively. The state players saw another win over Westinghouse on December 2. This time all of Guarilia's six feet, six inches aided him in blazing the trail with 33 points. The First defeat of the season was a heartbreaking one to Frostburg. The Final score was 80-76. Coach Lough's boys were outscored 33-31 from the floor but tied their rivals 14--14 in charity throws. In Dayton, Virginia, the Catamounts bowed to Shenandoah for their second loss. At the halt, Shenandoah led 47-46. This lead increased until the final buzz-er rang and the scoreboard showed a total of 104-83. Glenville handed State another loss on December IO to the boys on the hill. The final score was 82-64. Coming back to make a 3-3 record for games played thus far, the Catamounts defeated West Virginia Tech by II4 to IO5. Salem knocked the Cats down for their fourth loss of the year. The resulting score was og-111. Guarilia and his 50 points paced the Cats to a win over Connecticut State Teachers College. The score ended with a 9 point margin over the Connecticut men, 14,5-84. State won a thriller over Fairmont totaling 74 points to their 72. The Catamounts sought and won revenge led by Guarilia who racked up 37 points. Q11 Ianuary 14, State bowed to Morris Harvey, 414-65 despite the 23 points Guarilia tallied. Visiting at XVest Virginia Tech, State dropped another game. The linal score was 124-104. State outscored once-defeated VVest Liberty by a score ot og-84. George Morgan saw his most brilliant game of the season, netting 4o points. Back on their home floor, the Catamounts went back into their slump. A total ol' Q2 personals were called in the game. The scoreboard showed 77 for Salem with 72 for State. The game with Altoona scheduled for Ianuary 28 was canceled due to weather conditions. Shepherdstown made their initial play against State and deleated them o2-75. I'-Iigh scorer for the game was Glenn Smith with 27. The Catamounts traveled to Morgantown to play the undefeated VV. V. U. freshman team. They left them that way by a narrow margin. Glenn Smith led the Loughmen with ,go points. The final score was 74-70. The first part of the Frostburg-Potomac State game was close but the Fro-atbnrg Hob- cats managed to gain the lead and keep it. Frostburg totaled 76 points to Stateis 63. Shfpherd defeated State twice in one season for the lirst time in their history. The Catamounts were edged out go-87. Another heartbreaker was lost to Beckley. Gene Guarilia and George Morgan led the losers with 24 points each. The Final score was 96-og. Concord defeated Potomac State in the last oli the games on the trip Iior State by 85-73. Concord took an early lead and maintained it. Potomac State made another attempt for the season by defeating XVest Liberty 103-84. Guarilia scored his highest of the season with a total ol' 42 points. Following this victory, State had their Final fling. They downed Shenandoah Ill-80. The last game of the season was against Alderson-Broaddus. State was dropped hy a score of II2-86. The totals for the season were 16 losses and 8 wins. Guarilia played a tremendous season totaling 545 points.
