This sorority has hecome the largest national junior college sorority in the United States and stresses the importance of scholastic achievement and fellowship, thus carrying on the spirit and ideals ol the hrst chapter. The home ol Mrs. Ray Coffman was the site lor the Funny Paper Rush Party. Fourteen pledges were received in Octoher and initiated in March. The objectives of the group are to further scholarship, to stimulate school spirit, and to develop a close feeling of friendship with each other and of loyalty for the school which was its founding place. Following an informal Circus Party held at the Blue lay during Rush Week, nine girls became Kappa Pledges. Eight of these girls hecame active liappas in March, ln December a Christmas Party was held at the home of Mrs. Clark Bright. During Freshman Week the Council assisted in the orientation program lor the incoming studentsg two weeks later the group helped to organize the freshman class, selected freshman rules, and supervised their enforcement through the Kangaroo Court. The Council supervised the selection of cheerleaders, held thuses, and sold programs lor the football games. Un October 3, the Student Council sponsored one of the most gala ailairs on the campus, the annual Homecoming Ball, honoring Miss Patricia Collins as Miss Catamount XV. In May the Council cooperated with the Physical Education Department in the May Day Fete, which culminated in the May Queens Ball. The first semester was devoted to research and study of the question. At the start of the second Semester, the teams were chosen with Daniel Sharpless and Iames Cainer on the Negative and leanne Mechem, Harry Fauher and Richard Schoppert upholding the ztllirinative. Before going on tour, the group appeared before the Keyser VVomen's Club and the University XVomen's Club of Keyser. Uther performances were given for the Parent-Teacher Association at Petersburg, VVest Virginia, local service organi- zations, and several churches. The lirst trip ot the 1954 Spring Tour was made on March Ego, when the group presented programs at Ridgeley, Fort Ashby, and Romney High Schools. On April 7, H. and o, the Singers appeared in the Clarksburg area, visiting Grafton, Fleming- ton, Shinnston, Lumberport, XVest Union, Roosevelt-VVilson, Vlfashington-lrving, and Bridgeport. The group also broadcast over station VVHAR, Clarksburg, XVed- nesday evening, April 7. In late April, the Singers completed their tour with pro- grams at Martinsburg, Berlgeley Springs, and Keyser High Schools. Roth was named after Col. Samuel Roth, West Virginia University, an instrumental figure in establishing the Reserve Officers Training Corps at Potomac State. The organization was established to develop and preserve the highest ideals of the military profession, to promote American citizenship, to encourage and increase leadership, and to provide recognition of a high degree of military attainment among the cadets ot the senior Reserve Orlicers Training Corps. Proposed scholastic and military standards are required for membership. Salem The Catamotints scored their first victory over Salem with a touchdown in the last two minutes of the game. Shepherd Shepherd College downed the Catamounts 14 to o to chalk-up their second victory in za games. Coach l-ough's men could not get their oiiense working until late in the last quarter. West Virginia Wesleyan The Catamounts started off with Ross Mastrean scoring in the early minutes of the game and went on to annex a 3I to o victory. A go-yard Hobbs to Rishak pass brought the second touchdown. Mastrean followed in the same quarter with another sixfpointer. The Catamounts began the second half with Hobbs going ov-er for the fourth touchdown. Willis Collett finished the scoring for the afternoon as he went over from the two yardline. Ross Mastrean converted the only extra point. Concord The Concord Lions spoiled the Potomac State Homecoming by downing the Cataf mounts 29 to o. Staffs only threat was in the hrst quarter and ended with a penalty and a fumble inside the Lions' hve-yard line. W. V. U. Freshmen The '53 season ended with a heart-breaking 2-o loss to the XVest Virginia freshmen. Alter holding the Mountaineers scoreless for three quarters, the Catamounts lost Otlt on an automatic safety with less than one minute remaining. 1- 11 Basketball Squad 1 l The fortunes ol' the 1955454 Potomac State basketball team followed somewhat the path ol a bouncing ball. The Catamounts displayed occasional outbursts of brilliance in an otherwise uneventful season. VVith a squad consisting of live returning lettermen and ten freshmen, Coach Lough's men compiled a season record of six victories and seventeen losses. The Catamounts opened the season at home against VVestinghouse .Xpprentice School ol' East Pittsburgh. After a hard-fought game, Potomac State was defeated X4 to 74. Fresh- man liorward Gene Becker and Lee Sisselberger, seasoned pivot man, set the pace with nineteen points respectively. Potomac States hrst road game also ended in defeat as the Salem Tigers racked up a H7 to 754 victory. Marv Kessler led the team with 25 markers and Becker followed with 17. The Catamounts lost their third game of the season at the hands of Shenandoah by a X9 to 76 count. Playing host to VVest Liberty, the Lough men appeared on their way to their first victory for three quarters. However the Final stanza proved to be a disastrous one with the local quint scoring only nin-e points while losing 76 to 64. Continuing their improving ways, the Catamounts trounced Montgomery Iunior College ofi to 78. Sisselherger led State with 23 points as live men topped a dozen markers. Having reached its peak, the hall started down again as Salem humhled Coach Lough's men lllz to 88. Lee Sisselherger excelled in the losing cause with -gi points, tl1e highest individual showing of the season. Concord presented the Catamounts with loss numher nine as they defeated them 84 to 78. Kessler rang up 21 points. State saw their opposition reach the century mark for tl1e second time as XVest Vir- ginia Tech topped them omg to 51. Phillip D. lleall of the Military Science Department. The team is sponsored hy the Roth Honorary Society with Beall serving as mentor. The team shoots hoth shoulder to shoulder and postal matches. The memhers of the team practice in their spare time at the riHe range located in Arcadia Heights. The teamis record was seven victories and six loses.
