Nuzum, who, before his induction into the Ulnited States Army, was head of the English department of Potomac State School, we dedicate the 1944 Catamount. His activities and ideas have been missed not only by the Catamount staff but by Sigma Phi Omega, the Folio Book Club, and the Student Council, to all of which he gave unstintingly of time and effort. May this annual be a tribute to the fine spirit of Mr. Nuzum, who has been an inspiration to the success of this and the preceding Catamounfs. The 1944 Catamount tesibenfs essage Every institution, be it family, college or nation, should develop some traditions. Certain symbols reflect the character of the institution, just as dis- tinguishing and distinctive qualities picture personality. Such a tradition on our campus is The Cutamount. It gathers its annual harvest of personalities and organizations, and then carefully winnowing the grain from the chaff, it preserves for us the significant personalities and organizations that have per- formed upon the college stage. Just now we are confronted by the grim and stark realities of war. In this all out effort many normal activities have been set aside. Only the essentials have been retained. There has been no hesitancy in discarding anything Whose real worth could be questioned. And by these standards The Catamount has been maintained, a real tribute to the important place it has assumed in our minds and hearts. To the sponsor of The Caramount in recent years, and at the beginning of this college year, who has joined the long list of Potomac State's sons and daughters in uniform, to his Worthy successor. to a loyal hardworking editorial staff, and to a fine cooperative student body, we offer our congratulations and our thanks. You have been superb in your devotion to this indispensable insti- tution, this noble tradition-The Catamount. E. E. CHURCH, President. The 1944 Catamount 8621415 255692 Despite many obstacles and tribulations encountered in its preparation, the l944 Catamount makes its appearance. None who have not participated in its preparation can fully appre- ciate the difficulties encountered by the staff: nevertheless, here is your book. The purpose of an annual publication is to preserve in the memories of students and faculty alike the history and traditions of the institution: and such purpose the Catamount fulfills in an adequate and satisfying manner. And as it continues to appear from year to year. it will itself become one of those traditions- one upon which the old graduate may look back in far future years with infinite pleasure. Such is its mission, and such it fulfills. W. D. ANTHONY, Acting Dean The 1944 Catamount aculftl RUTH CUNNINCHAM MANNING, A.B. Lunch in Davis Hall was followed by convocation in the auditorium. September 13-15 Placement tests, physical exams, registration, theatre parties and a few drastic cases of homesicknessf September 1 7 The excitement of attending classes for the first time paled into insignihcance after the auditorium ordeal : each girl was given a generous amount of cold cream in the face . topped off with a shower of smelly talcum: each female head was swathed in yards of Turkish toweling, turban fashion. Boys were decorated with the traditional lipstick insignia and were pictures of sartorial perfection in the gay stripes and bright polka-dots of bulky pajamas. All this beauty was displayed in the annual Snake Dance through the streets of Keyser. The fate of a freshmanf September 21 Girls in fluffy frocks and boys in Sunday best moved valiantly down the faculty reception line at the Student Reception. After the gauntlet was run, the gaiety commenced. October 8 The Sigma Epsilon Chi held the first sorority party, a benefit bridge at Reynolds Hall, which was a success. October 1 5 After a week of elaborate compliments and parties, the excitement culminated in the accept- ance by the sororities of their elated pledges. Wait until Hell Week, gals! The Pasquzno staff presented the first of a series of musical programs by candle-light, a delightful innovation. October 26 Mr. Nuzum, head of the English department, left for induction into the U. S. Army. A guard of honor. consisting of the Three Musketeers, escorted him to the train. We shall miss him? Mrs. Nuzum, who will now sit behind her husband's desk, promises to keep us posted on the progress of Bucky Private. ff f! ff WM School without Major and Buck would not be P. S. 16 The 1944 Cutamount eafz iafztl H November 6 Ta K . ti , . Congressman Jennings Randolph was the principal speaker at the 'Pi er Homecoming Luncheon today. A tour to show the Alumni improve- -'A if ments on the campus was followed by a late afternoon tea at Reynolds 5, Y' Lf 'f'P Hall. The high-light of events, of course, was the gala Homecoming Ball, 36, QQ' presided over by Dolly Nesselrodt. Miss Catamount V. Her escort was Q 7,9 Ensign William Loy, a former student, home on leave from the U. S. D ' Naval Air Corps. Because of the beau shortage. several damsels turned gallants and squired their best girl to the dance with admirable aplomb--gardenias 'nd everything! November 19 A gay, checkered Gingham Dance was held tonight under the sponsorship ofthe Sigmas. Informal and considerable square fun. November 24 The Phi Sigs and the Sigmas held an informal party at the Blue Jay Tavern, but there was nothing blue about the party. November 25 Thanksgiving! But not enough of either holiday or of our feathered friend! December 3 The Ciammas' skating party proved quite successful, and everyone had a happy, though perhaps Huncomfortablen evening. You'll be hurting! December 1 1 The annual Jingle Bell Hop was a merry, gay affair. Queen Jerry and King Tom presided regally and right royally commanded a joyous evening for the revelers, who will always re- member the occasion as one of Christmas gaiety in a beautiful setting. December 14 The Christmas party at the dining hall this evening continued the holiday festivities. The room was bedecked with evergreens: each table was cleverly decorated: and a hugh spruce tree beautifully adorned was the center of attraction. Everyone had fun, and we once again staunchly believe in Santa Claus. December 17 At last! The Christmas holidays-ten beautiful days, completely free from books and such. We aim to have fun. Merry Xmas, Diary! December 29 Classes resumed today-there are large gaps in some of them. Who extended the vacation and didn't tell the rest of us? Exams are too close for comfort. There is much flourishings of scissors. paste, rubber cement, and rulers. They seem determined to have a yearbook! January 28 Some of these English students who have sent notes to TX5 David Gi. Nuzum have received answers with a miniature photo attached. Those of us who received answers but no picture are a little disappointed. February 3 A few fuses were blown, but after this -slight delay, Mr. Yost began shooting the group pictures, all of which were satisfactory in spite of the fact that the W. A. February 13 The girls of Davis Hall were at home today. Their Valentine Tea was charming. February 14- Some four or five inches of snow fell to make this a Christmasy St. Valentine's Day. Dan Cupid complains that all his targets are feminine and that he is an expert marksman to no avail. The Ciammas had an informal evening tea with hearts and flowers amid all the snow flakes. Who sent all those comic Valentines? Such taste! February 23 Unfortunately the pictures that Eloise Twigg thought would be featured in Life appeared only in a Cumberland paper! Too bad! February 25 An all-time high in giggles and hilarity prevailed during the voting on Who's Who. Lee Sheaffer insisted he couldn't think of any women. Not even Emilie? Snow and everything. The Sigmas initiated Hell Week: new fashion in skirts: dolls and pandas in evidence. Mrs. Nuzum had no idea Eleanor Pritts and Barbara Proudfoot could recite jingles so sweetly. Who would have thought that black cotton hose, clothes on wrong side out, and hair pinned snugly up one side and allowed to tumble down on the other could be so glamorous? Take a gander at a Gamma! March 3 Leaden skies and snowflakes, blue skies and sunshine, all in one day! Surely Spring is just around the corner of March. Robins are on the campus again. JAMES CiRl5l:N Spurlsor The Home Economics Club was organized in l936. lts purpose is to promote interest and to develop leadership in the field of home economics. The course leads to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Home Economics at West Vir- ginia University if so desired and is planned for those who Wish to teach or for those who merely wish to learn the business of home-making. Membership is based purely on interest and consists of those students participating in the courses of food, clothing, and interior decoration. The clothing class began an active year by making table cloths: the foods group sponsored bake sales and helped serve several com- munity dinners. Both aided in the War effort by folding Red Cross bandages: some mem- bers enrolled in the Home Nursing Class. The outstanding achievement of the year was the membership into both State and Na- tional Home Economics Associations.
