It has been an unusual year, one Without precedent in the lifetime of students on the campus. It has been an historic year, whose real significance may not quickly be ap- preciated. We are grateful to the Staff and the Advisor of THE CATAMOUNT for a good job faithfully done. We will remember you as you help us to remember the Potomac State of 1941-42. E. E. CHURCH EEZLNQS ESS The l942 CATAMOUNT is a lasting and treasured record of campus personalities and their activities at Potomac State School during the first year of the present National Emergency. It calls to the attention of both faculty and students not only the things We strive to live for, but more important, the things we are Willing to sacrifice, yes, even to give our very lives to preserve. The efficient stair and able sponsor are to he coininendecl for their untiring efforts in making this an outstanding and worthwhile yearbook. K. S. In March, the fraternity, in conjunction with the other Greek groups on the Hill, sponsored the Ameri-Can Can. Several informal parties were also held during the year. Adding to the beauty of the campus is a flag pole, erected by the group last spring, which stands before Davis Hall. The fraternity in under- taking this project desired to contribute something toward the beautifica- tion of the campus and at the same time to construct a monument to Thetas. This flag pole will be a constant reminder of the patriotic and zealous spirit of Theta Sigma Chi. GDQD ESZALJL After losing their first two contests by touchdown margins to Mount Saint Marys and Glenville, Coach Dana G. Lough's Catamounts traveled to VV'aynes- burg where they submitted to the power- ful Yellow Jackets 25-O. Scoring on a last minute pass, Concord State triumphed over the Cats in the annual Homecoming tussle, 13-6. At California, Pa., on a muddy field, Coach Lough's boys had a red-letter day and romped over the Cali- fornia Teachers 27-0. On the road for the second straight week, Potomac State tallied two touchdowns in the final stanza for a 13-0 decision over Shepherd College. Playing on the home field, the steadily- improving State eleven met and defeated a strong W. Va. Tech team 6-0, for their third straight win. The game at Ithaca, N. Y., proved a heartbreaker as the Itha- can Bombers stopped a Potomac drive on their eight-yard line and went on to score the only touchdown of the game. Ending the season, the Loughmen went down by a touch-down margin, for the Hfth time in their six defeats of a nine-game sched- ule to West Liberty. The victory enabled the VVest Liberty Hilltoppers to capture their third straight W. Va. Conference title. Consistently outstanding during the season were Captain Gene Wherley, Mike Yewcic, and Stanley Szafron. Captain Wherley received an end berth on the first All-State Team. IR LKETESZAL Shortly after the close of the football season a call was issued for candidates for the basketball team. Seven sopho- mores and twelve freshmen responded. Seemingly bound by inability to hit the right combination, Coach Lough's Catamounts managed to salvage double bills from Shenandoah and the Peters- burg Collegians from an otherwise aver- age season. Another high point was the return engagement here with the Colum- bus University team, the Cats gaining sweet revenge for a licking taken at Washington, D. C. Closing the home season with a smart GO-48 win over a hard-fighting Westiiig- house team, the State five compiled a total of eight games won and thirteen lost. Lettermen to be lost by graduation include: Pat Crogan, Bill Howard, Dave Hardman, George Mullett, Jack O'Neil, Frank Yeakle, and Mike Yewcic.
