The staff of the 1941 Cata- mount hopes it has created an an- nual which will be cherished by the students of Potomac State as a reminder of the joyous days spent here. Through the Words and pictures on the following pages, We hope this volume will convey a true record of the school's activities, and the ac- complishments of her men and Women. May the events of the past nine months lose none of their glamour through repetition, and may this annual reflect the GDGDIE3. CID? NGTDTES true generosity of spirit, and in- tegrity of purpose that dwells Within the student body. With a great deal of pride, the editor and staff of the Catamount pre- sent this third volume of six books: I. ADMINISTRATION 11. Sixty couples danced to the music of Iimmy Andrews and his orchestra. The program featured tradi- tional Halloween hgures on its cover, and the hall was decorated in orange and black with a semi-false ceiling. Favors were distributed to all the guests at the ball, which was acclaimed the hnest of its type at Potomac State in three years. EIGDMECCIDM NCQ Dbl Climaxing the seventh annual homecoming celebration at Poto- mac State, the ball held in the gymnasium on the evening of Novem- ber S was by far the largest attended dance on the school social calendar. The Diplomats' Orchestra of Martinsburg played for the arlair, which featured the announcement ol' Miss Catamount ll by Norman Wallace, president of Theta Sigma Chi. At intermission, William lieller presented Miss Doris Cochran with a bouquet of yellow roses, her sorority flower, in recognition of her having won the title. JUN E E E. ESQ? One hundred couples attended the second annual Iingle Bell Hop, sponsored by Phi Sigma Nu and Sigma Epsilon Chi on Decem- ber 13, IQ4OZ, and danced to the music ot Reed Raines and his Rain- drops. Feature of the evening was the crowning of Miss Betty Dates and Mister Luennis Robinson as the Queen and King of the Winter season. The gymnasium was decorated with a huge supply of green pine, so placed that the hall gave the appearance of a clearing in a huge forest. Santa Claus made his appearance, and presented each woman guest with a small Wristlet of ribbon, on which hung three small bells. EIESHSTM S P HRT? Iust preceding the Christmas holidays, the students of the two dormitories on the hill assembled in the dining room of Davis Hall on the night of December I7 for their annual Christmas Party. After a delectable meal, served by candlelight, the diners were treated to an entertaining trumpet solo by William Marshall Rogers, accompanied by Mr. Withers. The meal was brought to an hilarious close as the waiters distributed humorous gifts to the faculty members and stu- dents. 4 X ., li, 1 .X-'-,VH-t ff ,utr . -- fy ff 'Av 1 C, is. f 1155? it Vigil., ' ff . :tn . 7?'i '7y N if laws-f-scifffgg R514 l ig i 1,1 i'.fe 'l iff' ,XX '!Ng y me , y. .i ww., ,li 5. i ea FA 'c R Ml' 'T is if i .ff ljsqyjyf ull if '-st. ,,,, JM' ,, 'i W ,X ,rs ll? DANA C. Loeon The oldest sorority at Potomac State, Sigma Epsilon Chi, was organized on October lo, iozgg. Although it is local at the present time, lor several years the organization was the Epsilon Chapter of Sigma lota Chi, a national junior college sorority. The purpose of the organization is to draw a group of congenial girls together by bonds slightly closer and more binding than those of ordinary friendship. It aims to carry on true sisterhood by unsellishness and consideration of others. It encourages the highest standards of morality and mentalityg the members try to attain that perfection of character which typilies perfect womanhood. They are instructed in tolerance, amiability, kind- ness, and fraternal love for their associates. By these ideals, Sigma strives not only for a better sorority, but for a better college. Miss lane Homan was awarded the Sigma Scholarship Pin for the highest average at the end of the hrst semester. This is an innovation which will be carried on in future years. This year Sigma Epsilon Chi, with Phi Sigma Nu, sponsored the Christmas dance. the second annual ulingle Bell Hop, and the hrst spring dance, the Shamrock Shag. Miss Betty Oates was crowned Queen of Winter, and Miss Roberta Spangler was chosen by popular election to be the Sweetheart of Sigma Chi. A tea was given in March for the new members, patronesses, and alumnae. Various picnics, slumber parties, and a private dance were held during the year. E. L. DAYTON MR. E. L. DAYTON Ever' since its organization in the school year of IQ22-23, Theta Sigma Chi has been an important organization on the Potomac State campus. The members of this social order have long played an important part in all activities of the school. Scholastically, the frat has gained permanent possession of two of the Deans Scholarship Cups, and holds two legs on a third. Socially, the frat had a very successful season. The Annual Witches Ball, held in Ccto- ber, was proclaimed to surpass all of its predecessors. ln April, the Annual Spring Formal was held, honoring Miss Mariorie White, the Winchester Apple Blossom Princess. As part of the homecoming celebration the fraternity held the election of Miss Catamount Il, with Miss Doris Cochran winning the honor. She was presented with a huge bouquet, symbolic of the honor bestowed on her, at the Homecoming Ball. This year's group decided early in the year that they desired to contribute something to beautify State's campus, something that would stand as a monument to the Theta's. Lough's Catamounts met Morris Harvey at Charleston on September 21, and lost their opener zo-2. The following week, the Staters opened their home schedule against a small, but efficient Blue Ridge eleven, and went down to defeat again, I2-2. Then followed losses to Waynesburg, Saint Francis, Mt. Saint Marys, and Glenville, even though the Loughmen showed plenty of fight and drive, they just couldnt seem to win. After a scoreless first half, Concord rose up and crushed the Cats 26-o. Highlight of the season was the annual Homecoming game, played against Shep- herd State, in which the Catamounts showed off to advantage before the ole grads, by trouncing the visitors .ir-o. The following week, the season was brought to a close with an I8-O loss to West Liberty, on an icy held. Outstanding individual games during the season were turned in by Captain Bill Star, ford, who alternated at end, center, and quarterback: and Bob Kight, co-captain, and full- back. In addition to the co-captains, those graduating from the squad are: Haines Iones, guard: Virgil Barr, guard: Kenneth Bolyard, tackle: and Delmar Burns, guard. O Playing through a twenty-game schedule, one of the toughest ever played by a State squad. this year's Catamounts won six and lost hfteen games during the regular cage season. Time after time, in the waning seconds of the game, the Cats were nosed out by a three or four point margin, after having dominated the play throughout the better half of the contest. During the latter part of the season the Loughmen played .goo ball. Two games highlighted the Cats' home schedule during the past season. The first was the appearance of Kenneth Griffith, the nation's high scorer, with the Alderson Broad' dus team. The largest crowd of the season attended this game to watch the sensational performer. Griffith scored eighteen points, and was instrumental in the defeat of State. The second highlight was the return game with Frostburg State Teachers' College, which had to go into an extra period before the Loughmen finally won out 42441. Dave I-Iardman, freshman forward, scored half of State's points in this contest. The Cats were entered in the state college tournament at Buckhannon at the close of the regular season, and were defeated by the defending champions, West Virginia VVes- leyan, 60-35, in the first round. Individual honors for the year went to Captain Bill Starford, who was chosen on the third all-state team at guard. Bill, one of the most aggressive players ever to don a State uniform, was high scorer for the team, and a bulwark on the defense. For his outstanding contribution to Potomac's athletic record, he was given a special award by the athletic committee. The only player to graduate from the squad, in addition to Stafford, is Norman Ma- son: leaving Pat Crogan, Eddie Spear, lack O'Neill, Frank Yeakle, Mike Yewcic, and Dave Hardman as a strong lineup of returning veterans.
