As you look through the pages of this humble effort to portray the school lilfe at Potomac State College during the past year, we hope that we have fulhlled the purpose of leaving with you our dedication. I Cf 0'ccW0'ct The editors realize that perhaps they have failed to give justice to certain events of the school year prior to the second semester. Due to the fact that the Catamount did not begin to materialize until March, logo, the editors ask that the readers overlook any shortf comings which may present themselves. A very limited budget forced us to economize in every possible measure: however, we have attempted to give to the student body a volume worthy of Potomac State College. VVe hope you will appreciate our honest ef- forts on behalf of the First yearbook since 1927. -THE EDITORS May 9- 1939 1 N.-iii ' r , rift arm, ti i, wi, i 1--el 'JL-LC, W. im., pf L QIILIW CL 'LAll1C1lllJ I I wish to express my deepest gratitude for the time and elfort Dr. Livingston Cham- bers has given to the yearbook and myself to make it a greater success. I feel that his assistance has been invaluable. I wish to thank Mr. Carl Shreve for his aclvice when the yearbook began to materialize, and to Miss Deissle for allowing the stall to use the property room of the Playshop for a photof graphy stuclio. I also wish to thank Betty Heltzel, Kenneth Feather and Roscoe Beall for their helpful assistance. Contributions of photographs have been made by Iiyrl Law, Bob Metz, Bee Corbacio, Hugh Marsh, Maruh Steitling and Lester Bartlett. . f7C'1fZtlf7,s mm! jfi'OIIg IVII 'vom ll1t'l7701'If'j will lu' flmsc' of ffic' fuznlly. . . of ymu upnzlmz we my no 1110111 - , .... , fmt, qgc. , . Each member ol' the original seven now constitutes a characteristic of symbolic fraternalism. Ronald VVoodyard, ol' Huntington, West Virginia, drew tip the constitution and to him we owe much ol our inspiration and guidance. The Theta Sigma Chi Fraternity is a very active school organization, conducting its activities with the aim of supporting a more wholesome social program lor the enioyment of the student body. It was the only organization to sponsor two dances, the Theta Caul- dron given Halloween, featuring the music ol' a well known orchestra, and the Spring Formal, presented in March. ln the course ol' the year the Fraternity has sponsored live skating parties, a library benefit, and an assembly program. The character of the boys composing the Fraternity is high as shown by scholarship and high regard of the student body. The Dean Scholarship Cup, awarded for highest rank in scholarship, has been won three consecutive times by the Thetas, attesting to the earnestness of the body as a whole. The fact that all members of the popularly elected May Court are either Thetas or Theta pledges, gives evidence ol' the esteem felt by the student body for the members of the Fraternity. Invested with high ideals and an emphasis on good character, the Theta Sigma Chi Fraternity, year after year, has produced the leaders on the Potomac State campus, and 'F . . , . . . 4.1, won for itself a spot ot high regard and veneration in the hearts ot all. A pro- gram of popular numbers was presented mcluring The World ls Waiting for The Sun- rise, Song ot' Songs, and The Pedlarf' The annual spring concert featured the chorus in three groups, both a cappella and accompanied, also Daniel Fittro, tenor, and Dorothy Smith, pianist. For the sermon to the graduates, and the thirty-sixth annual commence- ment, the Singers presented some sacred and classical numbers. Ut interest socially, was the midnight lunch served by President Church, following the Christmas caroling on the night before vacation started. The lunch in Davis and the usual Happy Birthdays were enjoyable, and Blackwater Falls looked plenty mad as it beat down the canyon, along with a ton or two of April rain-and, Chimney Corner was not such a had place to dance either. Under the direction of Miss Katharine Moore, a school band was organized con- sisting of fifteen members. They made their debut at the lirst home football game and added more school spirit and color to the home lootball games. They also gained favor- able recognition in the Armistice Day parade held in Keyser. Next year, profiting by this year's experiences, Potomac State may be well proud of its band. Under the sponsorship ol' Miss Shipper, librarian, a Book Club was organized. This yearis club met in the library every other Tuesday at azgo o'clock and spent the remainder of the afternoon reviewing and discussing new books which the members had read. One ol' the outstanding activities of the year was a trip to Morgantown, where the club attended a lecture by Carl Sandburg. The team won 15 of the zo scheduled games. The varsity, composed ol' clever ball handlers and accurate marksmen. gave a good account of themselves in every contest. One of the surprises ol' the season was the ability and team work displayed by the second team. On more than one occasion they were the deciding factor in our achieving another victory. Undoubtedly the climax of the season in basketball occurred when a scrappy Potomac State quintet decisively defeated the highly rated University of llaltimore by the score ol' 45-37. A few nights later the same University ol Baltimore team defeated New York University. Cl. Lough. The coach began building a golf course as a hobby and named it tbc College Golf Course. During these three years the course bas existed, many improvements hav been made including an attractive clubhouse. This year the course was remodeled and two new grass greens were installed, Three thousand trees ol' all kinds were planted. These trees will make the course a beauty spot in a few years. Several students from the college have helped the coach in building the course. This year the school has employed Max Derrickson, a golf professional from Minnesota, who is also a student at Potomac State, to oljter the game as another sec- tion oli the Mens Physical Education. A great deal ol' interest has been shown in the game and now has a large number participating in the sport. The students of Potomac State have a line opportunity to learn tbe game of golf, which will help them greatly in later lilie both in their social and business ca- reers. Several tournaments will be held this spring at the College Course for the college students which should serve to create lurther interest in golf. Golfing should continue to grow into a major extra-curricular activity. C Htvai l,E,XN Iieiutv Dorrtx Cues Hows Three freshmen students led the Potomac State cheer ing section for the past year during the football and basket- ball seasons. Two boys from Grafton. lrlugh Dean and Ches Hobbs, and one girl, lerry Uoman, ot Romney, composed the team. Both Dean and Doman won awards during their high school days, being selected as the best cheerleaders in their sf? respective high school basketball tournaments. The work of Dean and llobbs as a team has received much comment from the students and the fans at State's games. The boys used in place of the usual cheerleading i motions, quite a lew novel tricks. All three of the group will be back next year with bigger and better yells and motions. i . S, t e c fit. - ' 5 ,... ,,-, - , O zzllm- .MZ CS-mf, During the past two years, under the direction of Coach Dana G. Lough, a substan- tial increase has been shown in the number of men participating in intrafmural sports. Our intra-mural program embodies chierly the sports of basketball, softball, and tennis. Additional interest is being shown in golf, due to the availability of a nine hole course. Although relatively new, it can within another year boast all grass greens. It is hoped, in the intramural department, that every male student will compete in one or more ot the recreational activities conducted by the department, The .Xthletic Club consists of all male students participating in any sport. Its chief purpose is to arouse the interest of the student body in healthful recreation. Under the leadership of Iunior Hodges and Vlfilliam Iennewine, a varied program has been oiTered. Each year it is customary for this organization to sponsor an athletic carnival, the pro- ceeds being used for the purchase of athletic awards. r This year a boxing team was organized by Paul Kendrach. The team, or group of boys, did not organize to compete against other outside teams, but sparred among them- selves. The main object of the sport was to ollier a form ol' recreation and physical culture. The boys were instructed by Paul liendrach, a student at Potomac State, who was formerly with the Diamond lielt Champion Team of Pittsburgh, Pa. Oli those that turned out for the sport, the following showed the best prospects: Wagner llgfbb, lones Qiool, R. Hunt Mooj, Wright C155j, Alvarez fi6oj, Hobbs Qizoj, Dean Qrgoj, and Poague 0805.
