FOOTBALL The Pirate squad of 1944 holds the championship title for the district composed of Stockdale, Sutherland Springs, Jourdenton, Nixon, Lavemla, Pawnee, and Poth. The team forged ahead to win five con- ference games out of the six played, and thus took the district crown. The Pirates also won a non-conference game from Falls City. The season was one to be remembered by the Pirates and envied by future teams. The credit for a fine team belongs to Coach J. W. Lane, who had In preceding years turned out excellent teams along with the squad of '44. There was possibly less experience at the start of this season than In any previous Pirate squad but at the middle of the season each seemed a veteran ball player, and the result was Inevitable. The record for the year Is as follows: Falls City 0 Poth 45 Stockdale 0 Poth 28 Springs 0 Poth 27 Lavernia 0 Poth 43 Jourdanton 6 Poth 61 Pawnee 7 Poth 26 Nixon 22 Poth 14 Total 35 Total 244 BASKETBALL The Pirate team of this year was the defending champion of their district, having won easily the year before. After defeating Pettus in the final round of the district tournament the Pirates were award- ed the first place trophy for the second consecutive time. In add- ition to the district trophy the Pirates are the proud possessors of two other first place trophies: Karnes City and Poth tournaments. They also won third place in the annual Pettus tournament. The Pirates then went to Regional meet where they won the first game over Lyford. In the second round of the tournament they were defeated by the regional chsmps, Ingleside. The season's record was 17 wins and 5 losses. Individual scoring record for the season: Harry Meyer-----------154 points Charles UhlIg----------52 points Victor Stavlnoha------131 points Edward Vinclk----------32 points Charles Warnken, Jr.101 points Hugh Conn---------------5 points Melvin Flieller--------66 points Total points for the year: 548-------opponents 343 n I ...... ........... - mwm ' SENIOR GIRLS VOLLEY BALL The High School girls under the supervision of Mrs. Myrtle Robuck have been playing Intramural volley ball throughout the winter months. Out of these classes a senior girls team has represented the school in contest with Floresvllle and Sutherland Springs and was entered In the Annual Invitation Tournament at Karnes where they won third place by defeating Kenedy and Falls City, lost to Victoria, the winner of the tournament. Their marching and formations drew high praise and their cheering carried the Pirates over many a rough spot. Their singing of Pirates Forever before each game did much' to establish our school song In the hearts and minds of all fans.
