' Q-flu I E now in service, Nick, a junior in Poteau High Dedication Since we students feel that Mr. Glenn Ede ward Evans is our Superintendent because he believes in us, the boys and girls of America, and is confident that we can be trained to meet the perplexing problems of this age which of- fers us so many challenges, we dedicate our Potonian of 1957 - 58 to him. To us, this is the highest honor we can bestow upon anyone. We trust that he will accept our appreciation and gradtitude with the dedication. He is a gentleman who merits our highest esteem. Mr. Evans was born in Denton, Texas . His parents, Mr. Si Mrs. F. Evans, now live at Cordell, Oklahoma, where they moved when he was a youngster. He has four brothers and one sister. He and his brothers have all been outstanding basketball and football players . Mr. Evans received his B.A. degree from East Central College in Edmond in 1935, and his Master's degree from O.U. in 1940. He married Irma Baker, whom he met in Hinton, Oklahoma, in 1933. 'lhey are the par-- ents of four children: Max, a graduate of O.U. School, Linda, a Ninth grade student at Poteau junior High School, and Cindy, a Beginner in Hower Grade School. Mr. Evans was a basketball Coach of distinction. His teams won many honors, the high- est was the State Championship of 1946, which was won by his Harrah team . He was a high school principal for several years before becoming Superintendent of Schools at Harrah, Oklahoma. Mr. Evans is a member of many Civic and Professional organizations including Rotary Club, O.E.A. and N.E,A, He came to Poteau as our Super- intendent of Schools in 1956. His hobby is raising Black Angus Cattle. Every afternoon after our last bus has run and school has closed for the day, he can be seen out at the foot of Cavanal Mountain caring for his herd which is thriving on our famous LeFlore County pasture land. Mr. Evans has a glow on his face when he talks to us, or about us. He believes in Kais and we love him for it. . C x v 0 Q u N . U n v - l ' ion . rat . . 4 . . 9 . ' . 'n . , . FDITOR IN Flllll We of tlte 1957 58 Potoruan btafi would like to take tltis opportunity tothank you both students and faculty for the help that each of you has given us tn editing and publishing this book. It is our sincere llope that we ltave given you an accurate account ofthe activities ofthe student body for this past year. This is your book and it is you, as individual students, that we are striving to please. We hope that in years to come, you can call upon tltis book to regain the joys, sorrows, tears, and laughter that once were yours during your high school years of 1957-58. Education in our democracy is more tltan books and buildings, it is training in which each student may choose with free-- dom, ltis own path in search of knowledge. We ltave endeavored to record your choices in tltis year of Man's seeking to discover more paths in outer space. ADVERTISING Stuff MAKE UP In special recognition we would like to mention our sponsor, Mr. James Britton. Without his advice, patience, and atten- tion we could never have hoped to publish this yearbook. Also we would like to ack- now ledge our editor Jim Britton under whose patience and leadership the staff functioned as a team and not as individuals. We would point with pride to our assistant editors, Kay Kemp, head of sales, Bob Gillson, picture, Peggy Sommers, makeup, Jim Garrett, ad- vertising: and Cecilia Clark, copyg for it was through their efforts coupled with the efforts of Mr. Britton that it is possible for you to have a POTONIAN. This group, chosen by the stu- dents themselves, has been very active in sponsoring many activities of benefit to our school, including the morning de- votionals, homecoming, cake walks at basketball games, and preparation of a student handbook. This year, four members attended the State Convention at McA1ester. They brought back much information which we think will be of value in the future. They are planning to send delegates to the District Convention at Wilburtorf in March. .KN 4 a rse, tw ai F , l Ei 5 Q. is I ROW 1: Barbara Qualls Smith, Aurelia Lee McBee, Editor Joe Carter, Wanda Chandler. O Senior F.H.A. The Future Homemakers of America is a national organization for pupils, who are studying homemaking in junior and senior high schools in the United States, Alaska, Ha- waii, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. Since its organization in 1945, membership, which is voluntary, has grown to an en- rollment of 447, 292 . The major goal of all Future Homemakers of America Chapters is to work for good home and family life, which, in turn, affects our community and national life. We, as Future I-lomemakers, believe that by democratic procedures in the home, all family members can learn to appreciate the importance of home membership: develop the joy and satisfactions of homemakingg promote international good willg develop creative lead- ershipg and provide wholesome individual and group recreation. To help carry out the goals of Future I-Iomemaking, all local chapters may utilize project suggestions made by the National Council. For the 1957-58 school year, the Poteau Senior F .H.A. chapter selected as its local, state, and national projects Q15 FAM- ILIES TOGETHER, Q23 CIVIL DEFENSE, C31 UNESCO, C43 HOME, SCHOOL AND COM- MUNITY BEAUTIFICATION. As Future Homemakers, we stress 1002, participation because we believe that each individual should be encouraged to develop her own abilities to the fullest extent. We are continously striving to help our members become better citizens and homemakers of tomorrow. High School Band As usual, this year started off with the football season, and, as always, the Poteau High School Band was presnet at each game to perform in the half-time ceremonies. '1'l1e Band Queen for 1958 was Kay Kemp. Vera Anne Hampton was Maid of Honor, and Barbara Robertson was the Attendant. The 1958 officers were: President, Gene Pogue, Vice-President, Nick Evans, Secretary, Kay Kemp, and Reporter, llarriette Moore. The Band went to Durant on February 10th and llth for the Southeastern Band Festival. This was quite an exciting experience for all who made the trip. Then we attended the District Instrumental Contest at Wilburton in March. Ma, our director, has certainly been an inspiration to all of us and has aided us in our music appreciation. High School Mixed Chorus The Poteau High School Choral Club, under the direction of Mrs. Nell Hoyle, had an interesting year. To be- gin with, we elected our officers for the lst semester: President -- Kathleen Pearson Vice-President -- Kay Hughey Secretary-Treasurer -- Carol Hardin Librarians -- Wanda Chandler, Barbara Qualls, Sue Pearson Reporter -- Louise Burden Our initial program was the National Education Week Pageant, which was presented in the high school auditor ium for all friends and parents of our school. Next, we attended the State Thanksgiving Festival, directed by Roger Wagner, at Stillwater. We returned from this in time to sing for the Union Thanksgiving Service at the First Baptist Church. Then came the Christmas Pageant, for which we supplied the music and narration. And again, it was time to elect the officers for the very busy second semester: President -- Linda Midgley Vice-President -- Kay Hughey Secretary-Treasurer -- Carol Hardin Librarians -- Wanda Qualls, Joyce Pappas Reporter -- Wanda Chandler We were justifiably proud of the ten members of our glee club selected to attend the All State Clinic-Festival at Norman, and we wish everyone of us could have gone, because of the many interesting things they learned about music, In March, the time came for the annual Eastern Oklahoma Festival, which we look forward to every year. In addition to preparing the music, we were in charge of arranging committees to plan the Festival. Choral groups from all over Eastern Oklahoma were directed by the very capable Warner Imig, Head of the Music De- partment of the University of Colorado at Boulder. Next, we attended the District Contest at Wilburton, Oklahoma. And last, but not by any means least, on April 22, we gave our annual concert, which we enjoyed presenting very much. The glee club had a trio, composed of Wanda Chandler,l, Glenda Metcalf,,Dand Linda Midgley, which sang for the football banquet and such civic organizations as the Rotary Club, the Kiwanis Club, and the Garden Club. It was a busy year, but we had loads of fun. The High School Art Department 9 DRAFTING ClASS CERAMICS ClASS Il-00 ART ClASS Drafting Class Herbert Heavener, Larry Oliver, Glendon Chester. BOONVILLE 12 '- 6 The Pirates attempting a comeback from 1956's disastrous season, were hampered by first game nervousness, but managed to out-gain, out-dig, and out-score a big, tough Booneville team, winning the first game of the season 12 - 6. SALLISAW 0 - 12 MCALESTERS - 33 Poteau's out-weighed Pirates put up a game fight against the burly Buffaloes from McAlester Friday night and flashed an offensive which, through the airways, produced the longest run of the game, but bowed in defeat by a count of 33 - 6. STIGLER 25 - '7 The Poteau Pirates showed some of their old time power at Stigler by rocking up a 25 - 7 victory over the un- defeated Class B Stigler Panthers, thus throwing the NOAA championship race into a four-way tie. The Pirates were charging harder under the new assignments given out by Coach Sherman Floyd. The ends and tackles were turning in the wide plays, cutting down the off tackle slants, and any other play that was tried. The best pass defense of the season was displayed as the Panthers were held to seven yards in the air. WILBURTON 31 - 6 The Pirates were in an all or nothing mood as they exploded five touchdown plays which went for long gains to score a convincing 31 to 6 victory over the Wilburton Diggers. Wilburton led in lst dow ns while Poteau commanded the total yardage with 411 yards racked up for the evening. CHECOTAH 34 - 9 Poteau's poignant Pirates polished off an impotent but fighting Checotah Wildcat eleven before a small, enthu- siasticggroup of loyal supporters and won their second NOAA conference victory out of three starts by a score of 34 to . -A Jwmnvvurv- qu-rm :.f ,,.' .,,, , , .,.. . i m ea ., W - gin W tMmTE-iwxrrrcmrnmwiify q, W o g 'te' iam. i I 0 Q 51 ' u is-rss OAK ROUNDUPH After a brilliant first quarter, they seemed to rest most of the second quarter permitting the Wildcats to cross their goal line. Coach Sherman Floyd's boys easily chalked up 16 first downs to their opponents' 6 and rolled up a total yardage of 368 to 120. EUFAULA 12 - 0 The Eufaula lronheads proved to be a stout team on their home field when the invading Pirates, evidently look- ing ahead ,to future encounters, found the going tougher than expected but found pay dirt twice to win 12 - 0. Bob Irvin made two beautiful runs for the two scores. The Pirate line aided him in every way. STILW ELL 39 - 7 Poteau's super charged Pirates chalked up their fifth straight victory by fouling the Stilwell Indians' big 'Mas- sacre they had planned for us to a count of 39 to 7. Again Bob Irvin displayed his ability on the gridiron by scor- ing three touchdowns, one an 85 - yard kick return, and two extra points. HEAVENER 14 ' 7 The Pirates ran their victory skein to six straight by defeating their traditional county rival 14 to 7. l-leavener pretty well contained the brilliant running of Irvin until the 4th quarter when he broke loose for a 36 yard run for the second touchdown and both extra points. Bill Butler picked up his first touchdown on a plunge that was set up by a Manlove to Borin pass. 'I'he game was exceptionally clean with few penalties. WAGONER 20 - 14 'I'he Poteau Pirates clinched at least a tie for the NOAA conference championship in a brilliantly played game when they defeated the hustllng Wagoner Bulldog aggregation in the High School Stadium by a count of 20 to 14. About 300 frost bitten but happy fans sat in the stands to watch the Pirates, in their final game of the season, put up as great an exhibition of High School football as has been witnessed in many a day in spite of great handicaps 4 l... in H uma-,L ff f1zc!1'r,+' 504,450 541414 HD ......
