College at Stillwater, and holds a B.S. degree, During the one season Mr. Collins has coached in Poteau, his teams have made good records in football, basketball and track. Although the track teams were only organized this year, they have done enough to make the school proud of them. The basketball teams have not won many games but they have made a creditable showing in each game. The football teams, however. have made a better record by winning four of their ten games. In all the games and track meets, the teams showed the result of enthusiastic coaching. Mr. Collins is well liked by the students and faculty: and they believe that he can build winning teams for Poteau High School. .J .1 ,.- 4 , fi' di , j, Cffootball ueen RUTH Haus Goto Ruth Hale Gold, a junior, won the football queen contest this year with a total of 6848 votes. This is an annual contest spon- sored by the Student Council. Each class selected a candidate and from these, the queen was chosen. She was crowned at the Thanks- giving football game between Poteau and Heavener, and presided during the game. Ruth Hale takes an active part in several school organizations and is popular among her classmates. Page lforltr-st't't FGOTBALL TEAM First row: Harold Chitwood. Kenneth Kirk, J.B. POTONIAN REVIEWS THE SEASON We are not going to say that the Pirates had an entirely success- ful season. They didn't for they won only forty percent of the games played. However, we do point with some bit of pride to the fact that they tied their opponents in total scores made against them 92 to 92. During the early part of the season Captain Wayne Shaw was injured, and did not play in the major portion of the games. but he was always on the sidelines encouraging his teammates. The Potonian feels that what success the Pirates had this year was due to a sense of cooperation among the members of the squad, and with their coach. These boys are loyal to Poteau High School and the high school has shown a like loyalty to them. All that we ask of the boys next year is that this forty percent won be on the opponents' end of the score. Page Forty-nine BASKETBALL TEAM Joe Paul Logan, Wayne Weeks, Bill Logan, Roy Heavener.
