S ecxetary lt seems that four years could never hold happier memories than they do for us, the class of '52. As we look back over the many days and months during which we haunted these halls and sat in these class rooms, we realize that there's something about old P. H. S that we'll never forget. ln 1948 we were quite typical freshmen-scared to death, lost in a new, frightenly large building, amid a multitude of strange faces. Then, gradually, as we learned to find our way around, it started to be fun. There were freshmen mixers, basketball and football games and a skating party. We really began to feel at home. Then we were sophomoresl By this time it was old stuff to us, and we sailed through our second year with ease. We began to take more interest in parties. dances- social life in general-and really got into the swing of it. Our junior year was an unforgettable one with such memorable highlights as the junior class play and the Iunior-Senior Prom, which we successfully put on with the help of two wonderful sponsors, Miss Schwartz and Mr. Glass, without whom we couldn't have gotten along. This, our last year, has also been a great one. We now have begun to get impatient to be on our own-to begin working, to go to college, or whatever our own special plans involve. But we find that in spite of this, there is an indefinable longing not to leave. This year holds many nostalgic memories-the junior- Senior Prom, our lastp the class play, the spring dances, commencement exercises-all things of the past for us. So-we, the graduating class, now bid P. H. S. and its students a fond farewell, wishing for our own class mem- bers good fortune and happiness in the years to come. after these four years are just memories. aP W1 fan Hs mi liar IBM L. After a 7-7 tie at the half, the Woodward High Bulldogs took a lead that they never gave up. As a result the Trojans lost their opening game for the first time in several years. The big difference in the two teams appeared to be in the size and experience of the Woodward team. Tom Quinn and Preston Smith made continual gains through the Woodward line. On defense, Bill Pennington and Heine Anderson were the standouts for the Trojans. TROJHDS 0 - CLEIVEILHDD EIHST TECH 52 A dissapointed crowd of some 3,000 people jammed Municipal Stadium to see the Portsmouth Trojans get walloped by Cleaveland East Tech, 52-O. For a few minutes in the opening quarter the Trojans looked as if they might bounce back after their 28-19 defeat at the hands of Cincinnati Woodward Bulldogs. After an exchange of punts, Herb Burns, running from the split T gathered in a lateral and raced 68 yards for a touchdown. From then on the Trojans wall could not hold the visitors. In lightening succession Cleveland managed to push across 3 quick touchdowns and go on to wallop Portsmouth by a very high score. Dick Shockley repeated his fine performance of the first game, and Preston Smith ran hard in the backfield. TROJHDS 0 - SPRIHGFIGLD 33 Despair reigned over Municipal Stadium as 3,315 fans saw the Portsmouth Trojans drop their third straight ga-me of the 1951 season to the Springfield Wildcats by a 33 to 0 score. The Wildcats, scoring early in the contest, were never in danger of having victory snatched from them. Although the Trojans were a greatly improved ball team, they didn't have the power to take advantage of the breaks. Tom Gentry and Preston Smith led the Trojans in rushing while jerry Sturgill and Leo Brown stood out in the Trojan's defensive wall. TROJHHS 20 - CIHCIHHHTI CGHTRHL 27 Cincinnati Central pushed across two touchdowns in the final two minutes to edge P. H. S, Trojans 27 to 20 in a thrill-packed grid battle at Municipal Stadium, Some 2.000 heartbroken fans saw the Trojans blow the Z0 to 13 lead which would have given the Trojans their first victory of the season. Preston Smith, Trojan fullback, scored two touch- downs, then Thom Gentry scored one on a reverse from the 21 yard line. Although the Trojans outplayed, and outgained the visitors, Cincinnati managed to come out on the long end of the score. TROJHHS O - HIIDDLGTOUID 34 Much to the delight of some 5,000 Middletown fans in Middletown's Barnitz Stadium, the Middletown Middies defeated the Portsmouth Trojans 34 to 0. Led by their Captain, jerry Harkrader, who continued to grind out yardage against the Trojans, the Middies scored five touchdowns and added a safety to wrap up the game. The Trojan's heartbreak came when Thom Gentry raced 57 yards to paydirt, only to have it called back by an offside penalty. Dick Shockley was a bear at defense, helping periodically to halt the Middie attack, while Preston Smith piled up a large portion of yardage on an outstanding offensive performance. TROJHDS 7 - CIDCIDITHTI PURCEILI.. 38 Held to a 7-7 tie at the half, the Cincinnati Purcell Cavaliers turned on the power in the second half to push over five ouchdowns and crush an outmanned Portsmouth 1-ligh eleven 38 to 7 before 3,500 homecoming fans at Municipal Stadium. lt was an inspired Trojan eleven that played the Cavaliers on even terms during the first two periods, but the reserve power of the Cavaliers told in the second half as the Cavaliers completely outplayed the Portsmouth High team.' The most spectacular play of the game came with seventeen seconds to play in the second period. Tom Quinn faked a handoff, and passed to Thom Gentry who raced over for the score. The play covered 83 yards. Although the Trojans were outplayed, Kinney and Pennington could not be denied on defense. TROJHDS 0 - HHIHILTOH 68 Hamilton's Big Blue, after taking an 8-7 upset at the hands of the Springfield Wilcats, bounced back to pour it on a completely outclassed and weaker Trojan ball club to the tune of 68-0. Out to impress some 5,000 Hamilton homecoming fans, the Big Blue rolled up ten touch- downs and eight conversions to hand the Trojans their worst defeat in a generation and marked the seventh defeat of the season for the Trojan gridders. Tom Ouinn, a brilliant fullback or halfback, was a regular workhorse from his new quarter- back position, but he seldom had a chance offensively with the Hamilton line upon him before he could get started. Dick Shockley made tackle after tackle as a linebacker and defensive guard for the losina squad. . TROJHDS O - TOLEDO DG VILBISS 40 Toledo De Vilbiss took the opening kickoff and marched S4 yards for a touchdown and then went on to wallop the Portsmouth High School Trojans 40 to 0 in a driving snow storm at Municipal Stadium. Some 200 brave grid fans sat out in a near freezing weather to watch the powerful De Vilbiss Tigers hand the happless Trojans their eighth straight defeat of the season, lt was the filth straight win for the Tigers. Although the Trojans showed some stubborness, their offense was not up to par: that was the big difference in the two teams. - As usual Tommy Quinn turned in a fine performance as offense and defense, while Bill Pennington turned in fine performance on defense. , TROJHHS 6 - IRODTOD 27 lronton High School climaxed a very successful season by beating the Portsmouth Trojans 27-6 before 4,000 fans at 1ronton's Beachwood Stadium. lronton got revenge for the 41-6 licking the Trojans handed them last year by scoring in every quarter to still the hopes of the Trojan footballers. 'llhe Trojans scored their lone touchdown with forty seconds remaining in the ball game when Tom Quinn passed 37 yards to lim Corbitt, standing all alone in the end zone. Had it not been for Tom Quinn, lronton would have scored at least 30 more points, Quinn operated from the halfback and quarter positions and picked up much of the Trojan yardage. Leo Brown also turned in a fine performance on the defense. TROJHTIS 13 - HSHLHDD 34 Portsmouth closed their unfortunate season by losing to the Ashland Tomcats 34-13. The Trojans scored two touchdowns in spectacular fashion, but it wasn't enough to give the Trojans a victory. - Leo Brown brought the fans to their feet when he intercepted a pass on the 30 yard line with only a minute left in the first half and raced 70 yards for a touchdown. The other touch- down came midway in the fourth quarter when Sonny White took an Ashland kickoff on the 15 yard line and raced 85 yards for the second touchdown. It was a brilliant climax to an unsuccessful season. Line coach, Earl Gibson. and end coach, Don Wed e, are oin over a new offensive play 9 9 Q with head coach.
