The backing of the 1949 P.H.S. student body should indeed be ranked at the topp its rousing pep assemblies, ringing cheers at the games, and bolstering ot the team through victories and defeats have been extremely difficult to surpass. A great part of these things we attribute to the never ending Work of our cheerleaders. In past years there has been established in P.H.S. a high set of standards to be main- tained by the cheerleaders. A cheerleader in P.H.S. is a girl to be respected and admired. She is outstanding in all phases of high school life and she possesses a pleasing personality. TRUJAN 1949 Q 19 9 fm , 5. z we gf-f,..,...g f 'UWKMKUH ,M-xwfwv TRUJAN 1949 0 21 9 P. H. S. We'll never forget our first year in high school. Officers were Dave Gambill, presidentg Mitzi Le- vine, vice-president, Bill Stidham, secretary, and Iune l-lensge, treasurer. Our adviser was Miss Caroline Mackoy. ln our Sophomore year under the guidance of Miss Margaret Anderson we sponsored the annual Sophomore dance which was a bang-up success. Our officers were tops-Ben Smith, president, Charles Mohl, vice-president, loanne Kelley, secretary, and Rachel Hop- kins, treasurer. Each year seemed to get better, success crowned everything we undertook. We smashed all previous records in our magazine sale, filled the auditorium to overflowing for two con- secutive nights with our class play, A Date With ludyf' and had the best lunior-Senior Prom ever with Co-Chairmen Norma Bartlett and Charles Mohl. Larry Kimble ably led the class as president. Other officers were Alice Frantz, vice-president, lanet Moore, secretary, and Ruth Ann White, treasurer. Miss Mary Krausz served as class sponsor. Then all of a sudden we were up on top, Seniors! It was rather frightening. Bert Leach was our sponsor and did a wonderful job of directing our class play, Beginner's Luck. We elected our officers: Don Maze, president, Rudy Lane, vice-president, Dorothy Yaeger, sec- retary, and Louise Iewett, treasurer. In our four years at Portsmouth High We created an outstanding record in every field, and we are indeed a proud graduating class! Portsmouth High School, we salute you, and fondly bid farewell. Freshmen three years ago. Our first activity was to elect officers tor the year. Steve Clark was our presidentg Tommye King, vice-presidentg Phyllis Gordon, secretary: and Loretta Hooser, treasurer. Our sponsors were Miss Caroline Mackoy and Miss Marie Trowbridge. By the time we became Sophomores, We had really gotten into the swing ot things. We made a big hit with our Circus Prom and elected a good group ot officers. Barksdale Wim- pish served as president: Betty Lu Russell, vice-presidentg Betty Ann Hill, secretary: and Rita Apel, treasurer. Mr. Smith was our sponsor. But our lunior year was best of all. We started oii with a bang by going over the top in our magazine and candy sales and kept that level throughout the fun-packed year. Our :lass play, Susie the Siren, was a howling success and the Iunior-Senior Prom was one ot the best ever. Carolyn Rowson and Bill Henson were co-chairmen for this big event. The ot-ficers were an active group-Bob Kimble, president: George Schirrman, vice-presi- :ientg Carolyn Rowson, secretaryg and D. E. Newman, treasurer.
