SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS Glen C. West came to Portsmouth High School two and a half years ago from the staff of the Ohio State Department of Education. During that period here he has brought about many improvements in our school system. I-Ie holds his B. S. degree from Ohio University and his M. A. degree from Columbia University. DEAN OF GIRLS Mrs. Raymond Smith is the acting dean of girls. She has received a B. A. degree from Morehead State Teachers' College and an M. A. degree from George Peabody College. She has also done graduate work at the University of Wyoming. The duties of the dean ot girls are to check the girls' daily attendance, to serve as director of social activities, and to advise girls on personal, voca- tional, and academic problems. N! in 1 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Carlton Beck Betty Cremeans Sue Miller Don Foehr Vice-President Treasurer Secretary PreSidSDi SENIOR CLASS We made our debut at Portsmouth High School as freshmen in the autumn of '44. We soon chose Bill Apel, Eugene I-lackworth, Iirn Daugherty, cmd Mary Ellen Scott as officers. Miss Caroline Mackoy and Miss Margaret Anderson were sponsors for the new class. As sophomores we elected jack Batterson, president, Bill Apel, vice-presi- dent: Bob Mucha, secretary, and Mary Ellen Scott, treasurer. Miss Marie Trowbridge served as sponsor. During our junior year the class of '48 displayed progressiveness, as all juniors do, in every field of school lite. The class produced a very successful class play, Strictly Formal. The officers for this year were james Hender- son, president: Iarnes Barry, vice-president: Carolyn Hodge 'and Sue Miller, secretariesg and james Spriggs, treasurer. Miss Mary Krausz guided us through our third year. We concluded our most busy year by sponsoring the junior-Senior Prorn. jack Batterson and joan Conley were co-chairmen. As seniors we were a nappy and proud group. The class of '48 had made an enviable record during their four years at P. I-I. S. We presented a suc- cessful class play in the spring, and enjoyed a year of social activity and high scholarship. We brought our life at P. H. S. to a close with the tradi- tional commencement exercises. Our officers for the final year were Don Foehr, presidentp Carlton Beck, vice-president, Sue Miller, secretaryg and Betty Crerneans, treasurer. S. in the form of 398 freshmen in the autumn of 1945. Officers elected for the first year were Dave Gambill, president, Mitzi Levine, vice-president: Bill Stidham, secretary: and Iune Hensge, treas- urer. Miss Caroline Mackoy served as sponsor. The annual Sophomore dance highlighted the second year, under the guid- ance of Miss Margaret Anderson. Ben Smith served as president. To help and to guide the sophomore class was Raymond Smith, their sponsor. The students went all out in electing officers. The candidates who were elected were Barksdale Wimbish, president: Betty Lu Russell, vice-presidentg Betty Ann Hill, secretary, and Rita Apel, treasurer. To build up the class funds the sophomores promoted a sale ot tablets and notebook paper to the rest of the school. They also sponsored an after-game dance during the football season and a very successful spring dance late in the school year. This group has been active in school at-fairs and has shown promise of many good things to come in the next two years. H. S. with the same feeling of bewilderment as any other Freshman class. After five Freshman mixers the newcomers settled down to the business of electing officers to lead them through their initial year. M- 'oy I mn 5 E lbii JUNIOR CLUB The Iunior Club, comprised only of colored students of the Iunior class, brought to an end its eighth successful year in Portsmouth High School this Iune. The club began its year by electing Louise Iackson, president: Carol Melvin, vice-presidentp and Irene Cave, secretary- treasurer. The chief object ot the organization is to make the Senior year as successful as possible for colored students by sponsoring various activities throughout the year directed at raising money for the annual Iunior-Senior Prom held in the spring at Washington school tor colored students.
