Miami University, PHILOSOPHY OF PORTSHIOUTH HIGH SCHOOL WE BELIEVE: that school is life and must teach life, that to live-not exist--We must be aware of life, life temporal and life spiritual, that to live these lives We must learn to know ourselves, our world, and the worlds before our own day, so that we may seek and help others to seek the most useful place for each of us in the society of our contemporaries, that the fullest, happiest life comes from service to others and work well done, WE BELIEVE: that the American way is the highest temporal system of life yet developed: that the way of life as taught by Holy Scripture is the highest spiritual systemy that officials can teach only as they practice: that students can learn only as they usey that if either expects courtesy, fairness, dependability or honor he must have these qualities as he must have them for true happiness and success, WE BELIEVE: that information is not knowledqeg or knowledge, wisdom: that fame is far less important than honor, that, beqinninq with our school and qoinq on to our world, if we can leave both better and more beautiful than they were transmitted to us, we shall have finished our course. page twenty N TI-IE PRGTECTED CITY . . . on the shores of the Ghio stands securely to proudly preserve the traditions ot the Graduates of Portsmouth High School . . . TBCDJANS 0131946 Football Trojans of the 1946 season had high hopes of an undefeated season when the Board of Education hired a new regime from the state-famous Massilon High-Paul E. Brown coaching setup. Augie Morningstar got the nod for head coach and chose for his assistants Mike Byelene for line coach of footballland Billy Rohr for basketball and baseball pilots. Red and Blue started off the season like a house afire, Winning their first three games by sizeable margins: but then the red clad warriors fell to three tough clubs-Mansfield, Huntington East and Charleston Stonewall Iackson. Although these defeats hurt, the Trojans came back with resounding vic- tories over Chillicothe and Middletown. The Middies racked up 14 points in the first period but the Trojans Won out 33 to 14. Ironton handed Scarlet and Blue a 25 to 13 defeat, but the injury-plagued eleven took it out on Glenwood the next week 52 to O. Ashland fell 13 to 7 on the season's Turkey Day attraction. Bob Iourney earned a position on the Big 7 first at the pilot position: Walt Green, lim Molster and Dave Thomas gained second team berths. Walt Green placed on an All-State grid team. page sixty f Ill l T Portsmouth 40, Ceredo-Kenova 6: in Municipal Stadium. The Trojans inaugurated the Morningstar-Byelene re- gime at Portsmouth High School with a resounding 40 to 6 shellacking of a game, but bewildered, C-K eleven. A bad case of fumbleitis plagued the scralet- clad warriors throughout the first half: but Green, Thomas, and Company overcame difficulties sufficiently to rack up six counters. In the second period Dave Thomas carried the pig- skin from the 7 for a 93 yard touchdowng Gib Clowe went over from the 7. Then came C-K's lone TD. In the second half Bob journey went 65 yards, Dave Gambill danced, ran and dodged 74 yards, Clowe hit tackle for 45 and Gambill hit tackle for Trojan TD's. Portsmouth 0 13 21 6-40 Ceredo-Kenova 0 6 0 Of 6 Portsmouth 41, Charleston 13: in Municipal Stadium. The Trojans came back from a 13 to 13 tie at half- time to trounce thoroughly the Mountain Lions from Charleston High. lt was a victory revenge for the 1945 last minute defeat and was done up red for the mothers on Mothers' Night . The Lions kicked off to the Trojans after the half- time preps. Clowe took the oval on the 12 and reversed to Dave Thomas who sped up.the sideline for a Red and Blue marker. Clowe intercepted a pass and later- aled to john Thomas on the 455 the husky Trojan center sped over the goal for a Trojan TD. Other scores by Clowe ,and a journey-Anderson forward netted Trojan markers. john Thomas converted five times. Portsmouth 13 0 21 7-41 . Charleston 0 13 0 0-13 Portsmouth 20, Springfield 14: at Springfield. Springfield High nearly upset the applecart at Evans Stadium before about 9,000 fans in a thriller from start to finish with fumbles nearly causing the defeat of the victorious Trojans. The Wildcats led 14 to 0 at the half and had reached the visitors' 7 with only a minute re- maining in the tilt. After an exchange of punts in the second half Dave Thomas raced 92 yards for the initial Trojan marker. journey and Clowe alternated for 41 yards with Clowe going over from the l. Clowe ripped off 64 yards through tackle to assure the Trojans No.,3 victory. Portsmouth 0 0 13 7-20 Springfield 7 7 0 0-14 Portsmouth 7, Mansfield 14: in Municipal Stadium. The supreme test came when the highly touted Mans- field Tyger entered Municipal Stadium October 4 to defeat the locals before 6,894 spectators, the largest recorded crowd for quite some time. The Tygers had too much experience, speed, and beef for the Red and Blue to cope with but had to cash in on the breaks to take the tilt in a hard fought struggle. Dave Gambill fell on a Trojan fumble in the end zone for the lone Trojan TD in the fourth periodg john Thomas converted for a 14 to 7 final. Mansfield 7 0 0 7Al4 Portsmouth 0 0 0 7- 7 Portsmouth 13, Huntington East 25: in Municipal Stadium. The Trojans dropped No. 2 to the Highlanders when they lost to the weather man who off-set the fast break- ing T with a muddy gridiron. The Trojans led twice in the tilt and gained honors as being the first to score against the seven blocks of stone from up river way. Clowe went 30 yards climaxing a 65 yard drive early in the game for the first Trojan score, but back came Pelty after a recovered Scarlet and Blue fumble to tie the tilt up. Dave Thomas dashed 50 yards for another Trojan score, but back came mud-draped Felty to go 16 yards after another of the Trojans' 13 fumbles had been recovered by the visitor for a Highlander tally. Felty tallied twice more before the final gun. Huntington East 7 12 6 0-25 Portsmouth 13 0 0 0-13 Portsmouth 6, Charleston Stonewall Iaclrson 13, at Charleston. For the third straight week the Morningstar carriers met their match, this time from the Charleston Stone- wall eleven. After a drive to the ll, the Trojans pushed over the first score of the contest when Clowe dived over from the 2. john Thomas missed the point after. Red and Blue held a six point edge over the Red and White of Charleston for two quarters of play. Dave Thomas left the tilt in the third period because ot cuts received from Hcliging in on a glass-trewn grid- iron, the result of a bottle tossing fracas of the night before. The generals made two TD's in the final to hand defeat No. 3 to the Trojans. Middletown 14: at Middletown. The Portsmouth Trojans displayed the form that led them to three early season victories as they upset the favorite Middletown Middies in their homecoming tilt. This Trojan victory evened the Middie series through the years with six wins, six losses and six ties. The first quarter brought the 6,400 homecoming crowd into hysterical joy as the Middies gathered 14 points. Second quarter left the home squad with a one point advantage. After the half the Trojans came back to the gridiron to whip the Middies with the most lop-sided score of the Portsmouth-Middletown series. Portsmouth 0 13 6 14-33 Middletown 14 0 0 0-14 Portsmouth 13, lronton 25: in Municipal Stadium. The Orange and Black from Tanktown took revenge for their Trojan defeat on an otherwise perfect record for the 1945 season after a half time score of 7 to 6 in favor of the Trojans. The Tigers came out ot the half huddle with a new offense which they hadn't showed all season and massacred the Red and Blue for the first time in many years. Sparks, Clowe, Iourney and Gambill carried the mail for the Trojans. Irontori 6 0 13 6-25 Portsmouth 7 0 0 6-13 Portsmouth 52, New Boston 0: in Municipal Stadium. This contest between the two top local grid teams was a one-sided affair as the Trojans took out on the weaker Glenwood eleven what they couldn't do against the Tigers the week before. Portsmouth scored early in the first and then later on in the quarter, but the offensive subsided in the second period. New Boston penetrated to the Trojan's 15 but that was as far as they cut the host's forward wall. A pass offense netted the Trojans 13 markers in the third canto and 27 points in the final. Portsmouth 12 0 13 27-52 New Boston 0 0 0 0- 0 Portsmouth 13, Ashland 7: at Ashland. The Trojans traveled to Putnam Stadium to close the books on another football season on Turkey Day with their seventh win of the campaign, No. 2 in the Big 6,000 fans sat in the sun to watch the journey-piloted Trojans close up the Big 7 competition for the grid year. The men of Troy cashed in on a break in the first period when Cassidy recovered an Ashland fumble on the host's 23. Sparks made the TD from the 4. lohn Thomas' toe proved its worth. Blanton scored for Ash- land in the second: Callahan converted. The Trojans scored in the third from an 80 yard march down the field on seven plays of straight football.
