Good fortune crowned their efforts in their senior class play, their senior dance, their banquet, and their graduation exercises. All this was accomplished under the leadership of Howard Harcha, president, Ralph Baker, vice-president, Catherine Blair, secretary: and Betty Kah, treas- urer. Under their guidance the graduation committees, because of their meticulous planning, presented to Portsmouth High School one of its most impressive and exciting graduation weeks. A When those happy, but somewhat nostalgic seniors reached nervously for their diplomas, they accepted them with no little reluctance, for they left memories behind. In an aura of mystery and suspense the class staged its play Midnight . They presented their best for acceptance in the Emily Ball chapter of the National Honor Society with thirteen in their junior year and thirty members their senior year. In culmination of their high school careers the seniors, bucking unconsciously all the while the intangible vagueness and uncertainty of the future, passed solemnly through their baccalaureate and commencement exercises and somewhat more light-heartedly through their junior-senior prom and their commencement dance. For some, collegeg for others, employment: for many, the responsibility of de- fending what they had enjoyed for four years -a typically American high school education and career. l.'.f'A.l'l'1' lQl.l.lQf'l ,A.ElLllT'lC.2'lxLDl': ll1o:E.. ll H1411 F-11 v1..Spi1n1sl1 Clult 4. .f - Il as Olf1f'f1 4. H. S. ring with their pep and vital interest in school activities. These freshmen seemed to realize the importance of getting off to a good start. They made the necessary adjustments to become mem- bers of the big family. This class with lames Noel as president, Cynthia Edwards, vice-president: Sarah Du Puy, secretaryg and Carolyn Dill, treasurer, pitched in to stage their skating party, which was a tremendous success. They took the usual razzing of the upperclassmen good-naturedly and are eagerly looking forward to the privileges and responsibilities of upperclassmen. President Charles Smith, vice-president Bonnie Walbright, secretary Barbara Questel, and treasurer Glenn Walker headed the efferves- cent group this year through a full schedule including selection of a class ring: presentation of their play Suspense , acceptance of twelve members into the National Honor Society, and reporting school news to the Portsmouth Times. To sponsor the prom, they presented a hilarious burlesque with an all-male cast. The play, Aunt Dinah's Quilting Party , was the brainchild of Bert Leach, popular faculty member and drainatist par excellence. A junior dance, itself a success, also contributed financially to the prom, Mr. Lorentz was chosen class sponsor. it-' I , ., +6 x M lf 3 J' f' ', qw . . 5. v-. J z -1.4 - MW. S., Q. Twenty-eight seniors and one junior-the link girlecom- prise this council. These girls are selected for their scholar- ship, service, leadership, and character. At the beginning of the year each member was given ten freshmen for her little sisters. Then two mixers were held in order that the council and their freshmen might become better acquainted. As a climax to these activities a third mixer was held for both boys and girls of the freshmen class. Anne Duvendeck was president until she left for college and Ioan Lathouse was elected to succeed her. Other activities of the organi- zation were a Christmas party at Mrs. Cookes home, a mother-daughter tea, for which the council were hostess, and a picnic at two-mile hill. The last week of school was chosen as the date for the induction ceremony for new mem- bers. Officers for the coming year were installed and each new girl was given a red rose. The sponsor of the club is Mrs. Cookes. Plus Ultra Delving into the regions of Cicero and Virgil, members of Plus Ultra, advanced Latin students, came up with several accomplish- ments. The highlight of the year was Latin week, celebrated from March 13th to l7th all over the nation. Posters were put up to make the student conscious of the amazing number of English words derived from Latin. At Thanksgiving time the club gave a basket of food to the Sal- vation Army for some needy family. An old language was brought up to date when at Christmas time modern greeting cards, Written in Latin, were made by the club members, and exchanged among themselves. A prize was offered for the most original. Officers for the year were David Ladd, president, first semester: Richard F. Moore, president sec- ond sernester, Alice Dickson, sec- retary, and Patricia Dunn treas- urer. Q, ... t , ,I A., 4 K FIRST ROW W. Harris, Alberta Elkins, B. Downing, B, Handley, B. Doerr, P. Pirates, old maids, iitterbugs engaged in one maelstrom ol clever dialogue and unpredictable turns in plot that enlivened the play. Feminine costumes on very masculine figures enhanced the broad humor. Proceeds from the play helped finance the lunior4Senior Prom. Midnight The senior class play for this year was Midnight A comedy-mystery, it combined the better points ot each and provided a very enjoyable evenings entertainment. ln this tale ot wild New Years Eve in a venerable old mansion events move tast and furiously to a gripping climax. A well-chosen cast under the expert direc- tion of Bert Leach turned in a polished performance. Ronnie Rector, portraying a colored valet, played his role to the fullest and almost stole the show. Angeline Harris and Barbara Webb also added clever inter- pretations to the per- formance. H. S., and the inroads of the omnipresent draft boards, Portsmouth High football team came through with a respectable season of six victories, four losses, and one tie. Added to Coach Houston Elder's woes was the fact that the Trojans tangled with teams not before scheduled by P. H. S. Tow-headed Gib Lakeman sparked the attack against Ceredo- Kenova in the opener, receiving no little assistance from Red Glasgow. ln a ridiculously one-sided game, the high-powered Trojan machine steamrollered the hapless Kenova team by the astronomical score of 66-U. Heartened by their initial success, the Trojans ventured into the lair of the Charleston High Mountain Lions. Although the Troymen gave Charleston some of their tensest moments of the season, our boys were defeated in a heads-up game in which Dave Thomas, Red Glasgow, and Crib Lakeman Cyes, here they are againl showed up well, 31-21. Having sustained numerous injuries in our lronton game, the Trojans strove valiantly to gain a victory over Huntington East, but the injuries proved too much. The game ended in a scoreless tie with the Trojans threatening from the three yard line. Charleston Stonewall jackson Generals, unleashing an overwhelming aerial attack, handily defeated our Trojans 27-7. Matthew johnson and Calvin Flamer, making their debuts, showed considerable promise. Ten other men on the Ashland team also played. This game was a fitting climax, being the most colorful of the season and evincing from both sides an admirable spirit of enthusiasm ot good sportsmanship. Gridiron veterans oi Portsmouth High School, Trojan Booster Club mem- bers, school officials, coaches, and guests thronged the annual post- season football banquet. 'lhe Trojans got inside stuff from a pro- fessional master oi the trade, Clark Shaughnessy oi the tamed Pitts- burgh Panthers. FRESHMAN FOOTBALL Slugging through a season against Iackson, Sciotoville, and Central Catholic elevens, the Portsmouth High School freshman gridiron team fared Well. Under the mentorship of line coach Chuck Lorentz and backfield coach Fred Mutter, they mastered the intricate workings of effective plays, worked on passing, blocking, puntingfin fact, everything from razzle-dazzle to the bone- crusher style of line bucking. The frosh Wound up their season by deflating the All Stars, a team composed of the cream of the grade school teams. Besides this, they provided reserve strength for the Reserve team in their game against Central Catholic. Although all the boys showed definite improvement, Green, Rapp, Molster, and Kline were particularly promising. qi , , i . .15 - 'f 4 V a wif'- ff Q I a my 4, ff' 6' Q ' 5 A .. Iones' surprise when from mid-floor he heaved a ball, and it passed through to win the game in the last twenty seconds ot play! In the return game the Trojans, then sizzling in their end-ot-the-season heat, fared somewhat better, winning 4l-28. The Trojans swung out on a road trip including Hamilton, Middletown, and Huntington East. At Hamilton Coach Elders boys, although oft to a rousing start, soon relented in their attack, and the game received the following ap- praisal trom the coach: Lousyl Hopping over to Middletown, the boys were again humbled by the Middies 32-25. Not satisfied, the Middies, later to be- come Ohio State champions, invaded Portsmouth to crush the Troymen again 44-38. However, Trojan playing in the latter game was much improved. Com- pleting a dismal weekend, the Trojans dropped the final game in this road trip in cr heartbreaker 29-27. Surprises were no novelty in the season. Undoubtedly the most pleasant sur- prise of the season was a 34-21 victory over the desperately clawing lronton Tigers. This win was not an accident. Portsmouth trounced her traditional rivals later in the season by an even more comfortable margin. ln a story-book ending Portsmouth edged Ashland's Tomcats 35-32. At this game Don Monk served Uncle Sam by selling 310,000 worth of war bonds. Each player was sponsored by a fan who pledged to buy S500 in bonds for each point his man made. Monk's eighteen points plus another purchase of a Sl,000 credited to him boosted the man With whiskers considerably. Ashland, gunning for Monk, in the return game, downed our Trojans 45-35. Springfield, smarting under the football defeat of the Fall at the hands of the Trojans, walloped them 4l-3l. A repeat performance saw Springfield defeat us again 43-39. But the astute sports en- thusiast scrutinizes these games carefully, for they are an accurate forecast of what kind of team is in store for the next year. Such Trojan followers were not disappointed this year: The Trojan Reserves played such teams as the Iackson Reserves, P H. S. Freshmen, McKell Varsity, South Portsmouth Varsity, and Rarden Varsity with a more than respectable record. Harry Chastain, Gene Meyers, Frank Dinsmore, and lack Hughes were among the stars who sparked this group of Troymen. Holding ever before them the glamorous vision of a berth on the varsity, these boys improved their game considerably, especially in defensive play. Zone defense proved the more- often used strategy, but man-to-man was far from unknown. By the end of the season the goal of a fast-breaking team had been achieved. Coach Chuck Lorentz was ready to see some of his proteges assume their hard- earned varsity positions. tr R rut v1'1EkrLwe1R e ond R 1 r rfen eor e Q u 1 rho 1 i ooper XJVIIIIGIH Turner nn ng IJ1 1'5 stuns 1 E ris T1 k LJ Freshman Basketball A harblnqer ot rrrqnty Trolan teams to come the Freshman oasketbatl squad coached hy Fred Mutter served the ttrst year ot thelr athtetto apprennoesnrp at Portsmouth I-hah by turnrna tn a ruahty sattsfaotory season They sent down to defeat such teams as South Portsmouth Reserves an overoontldent Centrat Catho 1 Reserve team and a scrappy Soroto vrtte Reserve tears The trosn themselves bo wed to our own Reserves Clay Townshtp Re serves and t re Green Townshrp Reserves 'Vtforlflng hara sn oomtna out flaws strenqtne pol tts ana develoorna even furthe taforahe strorgpoxnts these ttrst year ren by re a t the season snower 'rark d 'r provernent Thetr ettorts were not trulttess so n 'fse u rdrnatton hghtnrnqhke passmq and an tron lad defense evlnoed thetr ttahttnut Detensrve play they were drtttea thorouqhty fa of zo e ond rnan to 'nan dete s lea oart1ou'ar prvrrse Fred K es I 4 L ra and Dtok Ennts atsptoy a 4eeh s ar, shor'1n aol tty un rms! n er os na ranqe shots that a s ot htfunaed thetr opponents J Q S L ,fb fmttrrac F' st Rglph Charm r, Delbert Lqir, Rxsrggrd Ennrs, Afzn Cornx-.'e.l, DJ Q. a e , omni . eeg.
