Coaclhing Staff COACH Nnss The standard that our football teams have set up in the past few years will attest the ability of Coaches Ralph Ness and Richard Hopkins. Each fall Ness seems to mould a winning team from green material. Although a heart break- ing contest was lost to a strong Spring- field squad, Ness's boys were easily classed one of the strongest teams in the entire state, in the season just passed. Excellent coaching showed continually in COACH LORENTZ the Trojan's play. RAI PII Niass TQICHARD TTOPKINS COACH HOPKINS Our scrappy Trojans also made a more than creditable showing in a difficult basketball schedule under the capable direction of Red Hopkins. His style of play developed toward the end of the season and the team made a splendid show- ing, climaxing the successful athletic year with second place in the state basketball tournament. Though losing several letter-men through graduation, f'Hoppy,' will undoubtedly give us a winner next year with whatever material he may possess. CoAcH BRYANT Four years ago Coach Bryant, a former athlete of Heidelberg College, came to Portsmouth High School. In a short time he was coaching the reserve football team, the intramural basketball team, and assisting with the track squad. Bryant is the type of coach that teaches the boys to play the game, not just to win it. His help in training the younger boys of the school for varsity squads has greatly added to the prestige of P. H. S. as a topnotcher in athletics. HOWARD BRYANT CHARLES LORENTZ al. The fourth member of the Trojan coaching staff is Lorentz. He assists with the reserve football team, lends a helping hand to the track team, and coaches the Sophomore basketball squad, the Tots. Lorentz works with the younger boys in basketball as does Bryant in football. Formerly coach Lorentz tutored the tennis and the golf teams. Lorentz always works with the boys with an ease that serves as a stimulant to their spirit. Football Srrnztxr fo flu' I'l-fjllff Got a rock in your shoe.
