CafcldHg Tt l ] av With the passing of time, People have only to meet. And this meeting can never be taken away. And in each life there awaits New acquaintances to be added, Each with its own tale; Adding each separately, If only for a moment. And with the turning of the moment. New roads are taken and passed. Only to meet again. Waves recede from the shore. Only to meet again. Administration Fa culty SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS Mr. Henry V. While there was a certain amount of security in traveling the prescribed route to a high school diploma, the options now opened to you are not so well defined. Now really begins your challenge. It is the continual task and awareness of the Staff and Administration of P. H. S. to provide as much of the prepa- ration possible to enable you to meet the challenge successfully. From the Freshman year to the Senior year, you came to realize the increasing impor- tance of your participation and effort in this preparation. No doubt many will be observing how you, the Class of '88, and you as an individual, approach and meet the future choices. Many will be observ- ing not just to look over your shoul- der, but with expectations, hope and confidence that your choices will lead to contributions that will be of bene- fit to you and to society. Sharing in this expectation, hope and confidence, the Administration of P. H. S. extends to the Class of '88 its sincerest expression of Best of Luck . The best time of the year for lots of fun in the sun. We get together to pass the time • sea side, pool side, or mountain side. Some spend their time just relaxing at the beach, while others spend their time making mon- ey to spend! Even the faculty likes to have fun doing much of the same (or pretending to anyway). What- ever you do with your time in the summer, enjoy it. September is just around the corner! The Fort Butts Experience Over the years Fort Butts has become ‘the paved parking lot for those who drive to school but are unfortunate enough to have a space in the school lot. Many students feel it is unfair not to be able to park where there is pavement but the administration will not budge on this issue. So all you future drivers • just keep smiling. Between the rocks and the pud- dles and the mud, driving your car up the hill to your Final destination is definite- ly an experience! WEEKDAYS . . The morning is the worst. Just about everyone is sleeping off the weekend, always keeping in mind there are only 4 more days until Friday! is a bit better and everyone is more awake • but still spaced out a little. It's easier to pay attention today. Just think 2 down, 3 to go! day.” Many of us get slumped. Its the slowest day of the week, but keep in mind - it's all downhill from here. . . . otherwise known as the hump . . . the day before test day r for many students. It’s time to ask for help and start cramming! ” . . . Finally Friday as we wait for the bell to ring. We’re done with school for at least two days, and it’s time to make big weekend plans. Have fun ...5. ..4. ..3. ..2... RIIIING!! 28 THE WEEKEND Ahhh . . . The weekend has arrived. Doesn't it feel good to be out of school. Although the town of Portsmouth often lacks weekend excitement, students usually find a way to amuse themselves. Movies (at the the- atre or at home) are popular. Football, soccer, basketball, or any other type of sport is fun to watch. Some gather in groups where ’‘Dictionary’’, Trivial Pursuit” or Scruples” are fun to play. And the occasional par- ties are heavily attended (stu- dent’s fun . . town’s worry . .). Whatever you do, live it up cuz you’ve only got two days. Sun- day night's are back to the books. PICS From The PAST SPIRIT WEEK '87-88 .... ____'rzs Tvstn sf ■Tuesday October 13, 1987 CLASS DAY” Spirit Week at Portsmouth High School was celebrated from October 13 - 17th. It was kicked off' with Class Day,” each class showing off their individual group preferences. Seniors were dressed as Martians,Ju- niors showed off their Rambo image. Sophomores wandered about as Pi- rates and Gypsies and Freshmen were elegant as City People. Student participation increased as the week progressed. All those who par- ticipated looked great and had fun. The 60's were as vivid as ever on Wednesday of Spirit Week. Long hair and flowered prints were the trend for the day. The peaceful” thought for the day was the motto for the 60's - make love, not war.” Wednesday October 14, 1987 60’S DAY” How do you tie a TOGA? How do I keep this thing from falling down? These were the questions of the day on Thursday - TOGA DAY. The Romans were definitely present at PHS. If you looked around you found so many vari- ations in style and prints on the sheets — Garfield would certainly be happy to see his face on so many costumes. Cre- ativity abounded, making it a very suc- cessful day. Thursday, October 15, 1987 'TOGA DAY” Friday October 16, 1987 RED, WHITE, BLUE DAY” Red, White and Blue Day gave everyone at Portsmouth High a chance to show their school pride and spirit. This day had the greatest participation by both stu- dents and faculty alike. Carnations were sold during the lunch periods and hall decorating was judged in the morning. The traditional Pep Rally was held during the last period of the day. Cheerleaders did an A + job in c x rdinating the rally events which included: Spirit Stick yelling contest - won by the Seniors; Tug-a-War contest • won by the football team; The great Flipper relay races - won by the team that could survive 4 laps. Team coaches had a chance to say a few words of praise for their teams. All this com- bined to make Red. White Blue Day the most successful school day at PHS. I Spirit Week 87-88 . . . We had 5 minutes between classes David P. bleached his hair Graduation seemed far away 1984-85 You never get a second chance to make a first impression. Impressing upper classmen was important in our freshman year. We were also impressionable and bewildered, but excited, full of spirit, and we quickly adapted to life at P. H. S. Fire up Freshmen was our float theme and party with '88 filled our hall on October 20. 1984 Neither our efforts nor those of the football team were successful as we lost to Classical, but we had three more tries! On the other hand our fund raising efforts were very successful, raising money by selling the rmorn - eters. soap, towels, and sponsoring dances. The basketball team made the finals at the Civic Center, but unfortunately suffered a disappoint- ing loss. As the sch(K)I year ended, we came together and did our part in planning the semi-formal, with the appropriate theme of ’Things Can Only Get Better. And there was a lot to be learned in our Junior year. Work load was its heaviest ever and we learned to balance school work and fun. We had more laughs then compliments on our Peace Train , but our rap was a hit and we moved to get our act together for next year. The gridiron Patriots nuked the Northmen and everyone else on the way to P. H. S.'s first Superbowl title. It was a good year for other sports too, among them tennis winning it's division, basketball making the quarter finals. Portsmouth also saw it's first hockey team. Turn my ring? was a familiar phrase, and in the spring many of us took SAT's for the first time May 21, 1987 we field our Junior Prom, Stand By Me, at the Glen. Finally, we watched the seniors graduate, always keeping in mind that we were next. 1987-88 Time, like a snowflake, disappears while we are trying to decide what to do with it. 1985-86 Optimist or pessimists Do you call traffic signals go lights-'' We were very optimistic about not being the little kids anymore, and we looked forward to early planning of our sophomore year events. Although the skies were dimmed by hurricane Gloria, our spirits weren’t We worked hard to make our Sophomore Safari hallway and float work. The team romped the Redskins with a 13-0 victory on Homecoming Day. During the winter we occupied ourselves by selling Christmas Candy and picking our class rings. In the spring, we took charge of semi plans and on May 30th, 1986, we Let the Good Times Roll. Summer days disappeared and our senior year began. The past three seemed to go by quickly, but we had our memories. ’ 88 Blasts Off was a fitting theme for our hallway and float, and was a huge success thanks to lots of class and individual effort. The homecoming game was a victory as we Buried Burrillvillc. and the team went on to defend its Class C title. The soccer team also had a great season all the way to the semi- finals and a heartbreaking loss. We took SAT's and Achievements for the last time, and we were busy making decisions Ailing out college applica- tions. going on job interviews, or making other future plans. As the year Continued we exchanged pictures, made plans for the prom and Senior Week, and anticipated graduation. We made it together as a class with the great advice of Mr Blaess. We’ll always remember our four vears at P. H. S.! Best of luck to you '88 1986-87 The big thing in life is not what happens to us, but what we do ibout what happens to us. Narcizo Senior Class Counselor Dear Class of 1988: Knowing you and working with you over the past three years has been a rare pleasure. Your aspirations, your zeal, and your accom- plishments have served as an inspiration to me. More important, however, I will always remember the love and the respect you have had for one another. I trust that this trait will continue throughout your lives and make secure the quality of life, as Kristen Hersh (Throwing Muses) related in song, Love is the Answer of Life. God Bless you. John Blaess Senior Class Advisor I can't believe that your four years are over! Your class has been through a lot together, and I am sure you have all learned much about each other and more importantly have learned much about yourself in the last four years. I would like to wish each and every one of you much success in the future and would like to leave you with this quotation that has helped me from time to time over the years. God speed. Mr. John Blaess 1988 Class Advisor When the clouds are heavy, the rains come down; when a tree falls, whether south or north, the die is cast, for there it lies. If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done. God's ways are as mysterious as the manner in which a human spirit is infused into the little body of a baby while it is yet in its mother s womb. Keep on sowing your seed, for you never know which will grow, perhaps it all will. It is a wonderful thing to be alive! If people live to be very old. let them rejoice in every day of life, but let them also remember that eternity is far longer, and that everything down here is futile in comparison. Young people, it’s wonderful to be young! Enjoy every minute of it! Do all you want to; take in everything, but realize that you must account to God for everything you do.
