i ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Developing An Inquiring Mind The English Department is comprised of 9 full-time teach- ers, of whom one is department head, and one a part-time teacher. The English Depart- ment services all students of Portsmouth High School. It of- fers 4 year-long, one-credit courses, each of which is taught on three different levels: basic, regular, and accelerated. Last year a senior Honors English Course was added to the de- partment's offerings. In addi- tion, the Department offers 3 half-year electives: Creative Writing, Dramatics, and two sections of Creative Media. No elective credit may be substitut- ed for the required English credits. GUIDANCE RESOURCE SUPPORT Providing A Helping Hand The Guidance Health Resource area is actually three separate areas. Guidance consists of a guidance director, three counselors and one secretary. In performing their major role of counseling, each counselor practices the art of helping students They help students to understand themselves and make appro- priate decisions in light of the understanding. Counselors also help students to accept the responsibility for their choices. The Guidance Department also offers services in the areas of indi- vidual and group guidance, consultation meetings with profes- sionals. parent conferences, testing and placement. The health area consists of a nurse and a secretary. Health needs are provided to all students in the form of exams, home visits, first aid, emergency care, and resource assistance. The Resource Department includes 4 certified teachers uti- lized in one self-contained class and 3 resource rooms. Students identified as learning disabled are mainstreamed in all courses with the exception of minor electives, physical education and resource.
