GUIDANCE RESOURCE SUPPORT Providing A Helping Hand The Guidance Health Resource area is actually three separate areas. Guidance consists of a guidance director, three counselors and one secretary. In performing their major role of counseling, each counselor practices the art of helping students They help students to understand themselves and make appro- priate decisions in light of the understanding. Counselors also help students to accept the responsibility for their choices. The Guidance Department also offers services in the areas of indi- vidual and group guidance, consultation meetings with profes- sionals. parent conferences, testing and placement. The health area consists of a nurse and a secretary. Health needs are provided to all students in the form of exams, home visits, first aid, emergency care, and resource assistance. The Resource Department includes 4 certified teachers uti- lized in one self-contained class and 3 resource rooms. Students identified as learning disabled are mainstreamed in all courses with the exception of minor electives, physical education and resource. The English Depart- ment services all students of Portsmouth High School. It of- fers 4 year-long, one-credit courses, each of which is taught on three different levels: basic, regular, and accelerated. Last year a senior Honors English Course was added to the de- partment's offerings. In addi- tion, the Department offers 3 half-year electives: Creative Writing, Dramatics, and two sections of Creative Media. No elective credit may be substitut- ed for the required English credits. The Department gets students involved from the very beginning by an innovative introduc- tion and comprehensive program in Home Eco- nomics Exploratory. Here students look objec- tively at themselves and the all-important decisions they must make during their teenage years. Following the introductory course, stu- dents elect specializations in the areas of Food and Nutrition, Textiles and Clothing, and Child Development. These courses prepare individuals for adult life as wage earners and consumers, and it helps students accept the challenge of living in an increasingly complex society. The Department offers nine different courses including Art I Elective, Art I, Art II, Art III, Art IV, Drawing, Painting, Commercial Art and Ex- ploring Art Careers. Many students take at least one course in the art area to fulfill their Practi- cal Fine Arts graduation requirement. As a re- sult of this sampling, a large number of students continue with their art program by selecting the upper level courses. The Art Department has been very successful in preparing students for undergradute and graduate programs in art at several of the leading area colleges. j COMPUTER DEPARTMENT k Combining Bytes And Pieces The Computer Department at PHS is a great place to learn all about computers! The students work on a ■minicomputer' called the Digital PDP 11 44 and also have access to several micro-computers. The students really enjoy working in the air-conditioning computer lab where there is an informal at- mosphere of students and teachers helping each other. The Computer Department is located in the F-wing and offers six different courses including topics in computer literacy, pro- gramming in the computer languages, Basic and Pascal, and computer application. Courses are offered for every caliber of student. A student may take an easier course such as Introduction to Computers or Com- puter I or, if the student really likes a chal- lenge, the student may take the Advanced Placement (Honors) course. The students go on field trips to such places as the Computer Museum, New En- gland Telephone, and the Northeast Com- puter Show in Boston. The Computer De- partment is also involved in competitions and sends teams to local and national con- tests. In May of 1986 five computer students competed in the American Computer Sci- ence League national competition in Penn- sylvania. A team of 4 students traveled to Providence College and Western New En- gland College to attend the Association of Computing Machinery Programming Contests. J MODERN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT |[ Adding A Classical Dimension The Modern Language Department offers instruc- tions in three foreign languages: French, Spanish and Portuguese. French and Spanish can be started at the Middle School so that students have the opportunity to participate in a 5-year accelerated program. The regular program allows students with no previous language experience to complete a 4-year study sequence. Trips abroad are very popular; in recent years, teachers have accompa- nied student groups to Portugal, Spain, France, Mexico, and Canada. The Modern Language Club is an extra-curricular activity that promotes lan- guage-oriented activities and sponsors a foster child in Columbia through the Foster Parents Plan with money earned from fund-raising projects. i MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT k Searching For A Common Denominator The Mathematics Department is staffed by 8 teachers including a department chairman. The Department ser- vices both the non-college and the college-bound stu- dent. Courses for the non-college student include Basic Math Skills and General Math. These courses deal with the mathematical situations encountered in every day living as well as skilled and semi-skilled occupations. Courses for the college-bound students; namely, Pre- Algebra, Math 2 and 3, Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Review for College Math, Advanced Math and Calculus satisfy college admission requirements. Over the past 4 years, we have attempted to satisfy the great variety of mathematical needs and abilities of this graduating class. All members of the class of 1987 have spent at least 2 years with us. It has been a pleasure teaching them in class and knowing them as individuals. We hope that they have made the most of our efforts and are well prepared mathematically for their future. Maybe the answers are on the desk SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Maintaining A Chemical Balance The Science Department at PHS is dedicated to providing the best science education possi- ble. It is our intent to provide everyone with a basic science education in the areas of earth science, biology, chemistry and physics. The Department offers 10 courses including 3 levels of earth science, 2 levels of biology, 2 levels of physics, a general chemistry course and an individualized lab-oriented science course. Honors courses requiring critical thinking skills are included in the course offerings for earth science and biology. The Science Department consists of 8 full- time teachers including a department chairman. The Department services approximately 540 students. Genius at work INDUSTRIAL ARTS DEPARTMENT Building A Vocational Framework Industrial Arts education is an es- sential phase of general education that involves the preparation, growth and guidance of the individual for modern living. This is accomplished through cooperative experiences in working with industrial materials, tools and processes, and learning of their social and economic signifi- cance to the individual, the home, the community and the nation. The in- dustrial arts technology education program at Portsmouth High School develops the student's general per- spective of the industrial and techno- logical society in which they live, function and contribute. The Department offers 5 different learning areas; namely. Electronics, Graphic Arts, Marine Occupations, Technical Drawing CAD and Woodworking Carpentry. The De- partment also provides for on-the- job learning and experience via satel- lite programs at Raytheon Corporation, Hamilton Press and Bend Boat Basin. 20 j BUSINESS DEPARTMENT k Making Each Student Accountable The Business Department at Portsmouth High School consist of 5 teachers who teach a variety of subjects—17 in all—ranging from In- troduction to Business for ninth graders to a two-period lab class called Office Practice for seniors. The Department provides vocational business training for students who want a job after high school, and can train them for entry- level positions such as accounting clerks, pay- roll clerks, secretarial clerks, typists, and stenog- raphers. The Department also has courses that provide general business education which de- velop an understanding of the overall business structure—basic economics, legal aspects of business transactions, use of credit, personal finances, and the rights and responsibilities of business. Besides these courses, the Department offers several very practical courses for students planning on going to college such as keyboard • ing and word-processing. The Department boasts two fully equipped computer labs with over 25 computers. These are used extensively for Introduction to Computers, Keyboarding. Word - Processing, and several other courses. Mr Robert La France Chairman Mrs Elaine Maloney Mr Robert Sullivan Miss Ann DelPtano Mr. Joseph Lagarto j MUSIC DEPARTMENT k Working With Harmony The primary objectives of the Music Depart- ment are to provide students with the opportu - nity to participate in all types of music activities and to foster an appreciation of all forms of music. This is accomplished through offering a variety of performing groups and solo instruc- tion in the areas of concert band, marching band, woodwinds, stage band, chorus, glee club, piano, and guitar. Flag twirlers and major- ettes are also part of the Music Department. Their function is to supplement the marching band during all performances. Portsmouth High School, through its band director and choral instructor, produces one of the Finest marching units in the state. The Music Department has been presented with numerous awards and certificates noting the band's excel- lent performances. One of the most noteworthy accomplishments was being selected to repre- sent Rhode Island at the inauguration of Presi- dent Ronald Reagan. PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT Developing A Sound Mind And Body The Physical Education Department consists of 5 teachers: one also serves as the K-12 co-ordinator. The Department offers 16 activities on an elective basis and requires all students to take health for one quarter each year plus undergo physical fitness testing, follow-up let- ters are sent to parents describing students' level of fit- ness. The Department also offers an adaptive physical education program. Written assignments are required from students on long-term medical excuse notes. There are approximately 860 students involved in the physical education program, 18-20 students per teacher, per class. There are threfe teaching stations including a weight - training facility in the adaptive physical education room. Its aim is to serve as the '’heart, ’ or the education- al pulse,' of the entire school. Portsmouth High School has 2 locations for media services, the library which is primarily print materials, and the media services center which is non-print. The report of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges March. 1986, gave a commendation to the ef- fective integration of print and non-print media in the educational program. The Association report stated that the library is conveniently located, new, well-designed and well-main- tained and that the collection is balanced and extensive. The report also stated that the media center was a spacious area of several inter- connected rooms, with space, equipment and furnishings for production, storage and circula- tion sufficient for supporting the needs of the high school. Together, the two areas offer a comprehensive reel to real resource program. They have achieved some notewor- thy accomplishments academically and athleti- cally. These accolades probably do not ade- quately describe the class as a whole. The experience of wandering through those seemingly never ending hallways, looking for our homerooms will always be remembered. Homecoming was upon us before we knew it. Although it wasn't the best float, there was a lot of participation that really displayed our theme, The Spirit of 87. We were then in debt as most freshmen classes are, but we had a great Whimsey sale that got our treasury going. With money in the bank, we were able to have activities like those fun bowling and pizza parties! The year moved on and we began to plan for the freshmen-sophomore semi- formal. Although the sophomores controlled most of the decision-making, we helped to make the dance a success and we knew that next year would be our turn. Our sophomore year we returned to school feeling more confident. With a year behind us. we felt we knew the ropes, and we were ready to make our mark in the school. We started off by winning the Homecoming float contest with the theme of We're Climing Our Way To The Top!” With our rollerskating party, we tried to achieve class unity, and although there wasn't a great amount of participation, we still had a lot of fun. As the end of the year drew near, we ordered our rings and prepared for our semi-formal. On June 1, 1983, we danced the night away with a theme song of Things Can Only Get Better. The year ended and we were happy to know that when we returned, we would be upperclassmen. Our junior year brought new responsibilities and challenges. The pressure was on to start preparing for the college boards and choose a college. But we had more freedom as many of us had our licenses by now. Homecoming week was a welcome escape from school. Although the powder puff games were canceled due to hurricane Gloria (we would have won anyway), we were successful in all other activities. Once again, we won the float contest with the theme of Class of 1987—The Greatest Show on Earth. During October, we held the long awaited ring luncheon at White s Restaurant. The second half of the year came quickly as we made plans for our first prom. The Viking Hotel on May 21, 1986, was the place to be as we danced to the music of Strut! As the last day of school arrived, we realized that the next time we entered PHS, we would be Seniors. Finally, the eagerly awaited senior year had arrived, and what a time it was. It marked a year of changes ... a new set of class officers, a new time schedule for classes, and a new way of looking at things (from the top!). Homecoming week took on a new meaning. It was our last chance to show the student body our school spirit. We concentrated on the hall decorating contest and led our class to victory with the theme, Go to Heaven with 87 • or go to Hell-th (appropriately called the Senior Hell Hall .) Our not so spectacular float was themed, We’re Headed Up-Up And Away. Thanksgiving Day came and we had reason to cheer. The football team defeated Middletown 13 7! We were still cheering a week later when they defeated Warren 23 -13 to become the Class C Superbowl Champions! As the year moved on, we ea- gerly awaited graduation and hoped that there would be many more fun times ahead of us. The Portsmouth Chapter is the largest in RI (over 100 members) and one of the largest in the country. Members have competed at the State and National level in all areas of business. They have won 42 awards in two years and have had eight elected to officer positions in the State of Rhode Island. Shelly Cote was the first to run for National Office from RI. Sousa TRAM SUMMARY Led by team captain Scott Dionne, this year's season of Boys' Cross Country was marked by strong individual performances and consistently improved times. Scott Dionne and Toby Paiva made the All Class C team. Lee Venacio turned in an excellent second year with consistent top finishes. George Dorsey and Mike Schweyer finished their senior year with the best times of their career. Freshman Mark Souza contributed to the team with his greatly improved speeds. Chase TEAM SUMMARY Senior Co-Captains Kate McCauley and Becky Alves led the 1986 Girls Cross Country team to a respectable 5-4 record, good for 4th place in a very tough Eastern Division. What the team lacked in numbers, they more than made up for with many individual achievements. For the fourth consec- utive year, the team advanced to the State semi-final game. The team compiled a respectable record of 12-2-4. Senior tri-captain, Christine Beebe led the offense, scoring 22 goals, and junior fullback Laurie Rockwell showed once again her all-state caliber on defense. Both girls made 1st team all-state. Well this season it was lonely at the top for the Patriot Boys' Soccer Team. The team finished ninth in the state of 42 teams which is very good. However, the 9th place finish was mainly the result of the long standing excellence of the boys' soccer program which had the team playing in the top division in the state. The team’s record in that division, this season, was not the best and made for a disappointing season for players, coaches and fans. Although the results were disappointing, the efforts and performances by this year’s team were commendable. In practices the team worked hard and in games the team played hard. In several of the team's losses the Patriot's greatly outplayed their opponents for naught. Lady luck just wasn't a Patriot this season. One of the highlights of the season was the team s Newport County Soccer Classic Championship. It s nice to be the best on the island. Another was the selections of Rick Morton to 1st-team all-division. Pat Galvin and Steve Chase to 2nd team all-division and Erik Item to all-division honorable mention. Douglas. B. O'Nall TEAM SUMMARY Picture Perfect! That best describes Portsmouth High School's football season which culminated with a 23-15 victory over Warren in the Class C Super Bowl. The win over Warren was the twelfth without a loss. It marked the first time a Portsmouth team has ever gone undefeated. It also marked the first time Ports- mouth has won a State championship in football. Coach Foxy Marshall’s team was nothing short of devastating during the past season, scoring 349 points, giving up 51 points and shutting out seven opponents along the way. During the past two seasons Coach Marshall's teams have won 20 games with one loss and one tie. To add insult to injury many of the players who helped turn Portsmouth into a powerhouse, including running back Duke Ingraham and quarterback Dennis Jerome, will return next season. In addition to the girls qualifying for the State Meet, each member of the team contributed to a total team effort and the total overall performance. TEAM SUMMARY After beating up on the Bristol Colts twice this season and hanging right in there against West Warwick, one of the best teams in the Suburban Division, the Patriots have proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that they belong in the Interscholastic League. Our first-year team has played quite well, according to Portsmouth Head Coach Frank Stranick. Thus the Portsmouth High School Hockey Team, under the coaching of Mr. Frank Stranick completed it's first year of play. The results were very impressive with a split season. The team played exceptionally well against higher division teams. Enthusiasm was great among the 26 players. Of our four wins I would put the victory over Bristol at their home field as the most satisfying win in my two years as head coach. All of these accomplishments resulted in a second place finish in the Eastern Division and a fifth place finish in Rhode Island. Jen Flad. Jen Catalan and Diana Warner were named to first team All - Division, while Becky Silvia was named to second team All-Division. Karen Oliveira and Vanessa Campos were voted onto the honorable mention team. Overall, the girls 18-6 record surprised many onlookers since the team had only 2 seniors, but a combination of hard work, school spirit and comraderie made this 1986 season funfilled and very successful. Little TEAM SUMMARY The Portsmouth Hish School Track team finished a very successful year behind the fine running and field efforts of several team members. The boys finished 11th in the State Meet. 5th in the Junior Varsity State Meet, 3rd in the Gass C Meet, 2nd in the Newport County Meet and tied for 2nd in the Gass C Relays. The team was undefeated in dual meets with a record of five wins and zero losses. During the season Duke Ingraham set two school records;-13’0 in the Pole Vault and 42'4 . in the Triple Jumps. The girls were large in number, out-going in determination and spirit, and awesome in the track and field events. Each of the participants complimented their counterparts - the boys track team. They gave support to each other and helping guidance through each meet. Michelle Robinson led the troop through the season, all the way to a fifth place in the State meet. Strong performances were always given by each member of the teafn but most notably by Kate McCauley and Chris Beebe. The new class included some very strong opponents, namely North and South Kingstown and Narragansett. In spite of the move up. the Patriot team performed admirably. Their three experi- enced players kept them in every match and provided the tough competition that the higher division is known for. The won-loss record of 0-12 in no way reflects the drive, determination and eagerness that the players and Coach Harvey had for their competitors. One of the shining stars was Becky Jakubiak, a strong recommendation for first team all-state singles selection. Coach Harvey is looking forward to a very’ successful 1987 season.
