CONTENTS SENIORS 17 FACULTY STAFF 69 UNDERCLASSMEN 87 ACTIVITIES 107 SPORTS 131 ADVERTISEMENTS 163 1 9 8 6 Horizons Unlimited Horizons With every beginning you’ll find an end Like brilliant sun after cool showers. On dazzling autumn after long, lazy summer; And with every endeavor you’ll find a friend— Love blossoms when least expected— True friendship sees all. endures all, and lasts for all time. So now. my friend, let’s view our beginning not as an end. but as an extension of the love we already share. As we go our seperate ways To climb new rainbows and grasp for shining stars. Let us not dwell on the sorrow of parting; Rather, remember always the times we have shared Laughter and tears have formed a bond that so few can share. You were my childhood friend The image of my youth. We’ve laughed, we’ve loved, and we’ve grown You were always there with open arms or a simple smile to warm my heart Like a well-worn teddy bear tattered with age. Look forward to your future not with a heavy heart but with a joyful eagerness for new experiences And yes. my friend, we must go forth— However blind we may feel— to find new pain, new sorrow . . . But most importantly, new life. Best Wishes for a Successful Future The Legend Staff Center Left: Christie Brinkley, watch out!!! Center Right: Let’s jam!' Patrol made its’ pitstop We went to Washington in 8th grade Lara had co-ed slumber parties We paid to have the pavement sandblasted Gerard and Mark were here We went to the Venus for the Jr. Prom Howard Johnson’s after the Prom Kathy Ayars and Liz Kaull were shy The Senior Class Halloween Party Holly sat on the cafeteria chair and it broke Health w Mr. Blaess (Annie) Amy had a cast for two straight years Brian’s house got struck by lightning Class History We entered P. H. S. on September 4, 1982. We were the shy freshmen afraid of being stuffed into a locker by the intimidating seniors. Homecoming crept up on us quickly. Our float theme was “The Pirates of PHS”. We won neither the float contest nor the powderpuff soccer game. This was the year we decided that a nut sale would be the fundraiser for the next three years. Many laughed at it (including us) but we were the freshman class that made more money than any preceding one. Our Thanksgiving game brought on a Portsmouth victory over Middletown! We celebrated the end of our freshman year with the Freshman Sophomore Semi-Formal. The Sophomores decided everything regarding the dance including the appropriate theme song Dance the Night Away”. As Sophomores we had seen one year quickly fly by and realized we only had three left. We won the Homecoming game this year but failed again to win the float contest. Ours was the Red, White, Blue float with hay spread on the bottom of the flatbed, and the quote of the day was, “Don’t fall through the crack!” Fundraiser season came upon us quickly, and this year we decided to add to our treasury by introducing the acrylic, otherwise known as”the plastic”, along with the nuts. Toward the end of the year we began choosing our class rings (the one in the bottom of your sock drawer), and we began looking forward to our Semi-formal. This year we dominated the decision making and voted for the Police over Lionel Ritchie, to make our theme song, “Every Breath You Take”. Our Junior year, the climb to superiority was almost complete. The year began with the ring luncheon at the Venus de Milo. After the luncheon, we spent days repeating the saying - “Will you turn my ring?” But by the time we reached number eighty-six, the thrill was gone and we began looking forward to Homecoming. During Spirit Week we were beaten by the Seniors in powderpuff football. But with the help of some Aluminum Foil we won the Hall Decorating contest. October 22, 1984 was a busy day for us. It began with PSAT’s early in the morning and continued with the Homecoming Game, in which Classical crushed Ports- mouth. The rest of the year passed quickly and our junior prom approached. The controversy began and we were the class that signed a petition for a revote. Needless to say, we did not get it, and it was The Venus de Milo year. With the theme “Dancin’ in the Dark”, our junior prom was a successful ending to the year. Well, we made it to our Senior year. This means taking the SAT’s for the last time and deciding what do with our future. Our Homecoming was anything but usual. We had a hurricane during Spirit Week. Our powder- puff games were cancelled and on Homecoming our float fell apart - BUT, we did win the footbll game despite the monsoon-like weather. Our Senior year will be filled with memories of the Senior Halloween Party, Senior Prom, Senior Week, and of course our Senior privileges. We were the class that painted the barn, street and fence - and then sandblasted the road! We have anxiously awaited this year, and now that it’s here, we’re glad we made it, but surprised at how quickly it has passed. We’ll leave high school to pursue bigger and better things, but we’ll always look back and remember these four years at P. H. S. as some of the best! Ferreira. Sr. Assistant Pnncipal Mr. Albert Cataldo Director of Guidance Mr. Jospeh Flood Dean of Students A Yearbook Message To The Class of 1986 A sense of satisfaction a sigh of relief, an air of apprehension about the next part of one’s life, an eagerness to move on, a thought about the friends made and the good times had, —graduation time has arrived for the Class of ’86. September, 1982 probably doesn’t seem too long ago. Whatever goals you set then, whatever outlooks and attitudes you had, whatever influences cast their shadow upon you, have four years later contributed to the person you are now. You are the only one who can answer the question - Am I satisfied with the type of person I am and with what I have accomplished at this point of my life? In the past four years you have learned lessons not in any textbook, nor presented in any classroom. Some of the lessons were valuable, some costly and some lessons con- tained content that wasn’t easy to understand. These lessons also con- tributed to the person you are now. So how do all these points come together in June of 1986? As you complete your high school career and commence the next phase of your life, other opportunities will be presented. You do have a chance to develop into the person you want to be or will be satisfied with. You do have a chance to learn new lessons, to review what was learned from previous lessons and to more easily understand the content of the more difficult lessons. You do have the chance to stand back and find that you are satisfied with what you have accomplished and be proud of yourself. But. most of all you have the chance to say - It’s only just begun. The Administration of P.H.S. realizes that as you are about to receive your diploma, you are a much different person than sat in the auditorium four years ago listening to an orientation to high school life. Our hope and wish is that as a wiser, experienced, more mature student and person, your graduation is truly a successful commencement of the future. As ath- letic director I am extremely pleased with the dedication of our coaching staff. I com- mend the outstanding effort, good sports- manship and commitment to excellence exhibited by our student athletes. Our pro- gram could not be successful without the high level of parent involvement and in- terest, and the support of the Athletic Booster Club. I would also like to recognize our outstand- ing cheerleading squad and advisors. I could always depend on their cooperation and assistance. AN FOOTBALL The Patriot Freshman football team was comprised of 28 players who earned the respect of many during the season. Having an undefeated record until the playoff game against East Greenwich the freshman team was regarded as one of the best teams ever at Portsmouth High School. Exceptional team spirit and a hard work- ing attitude were two of the keys to the teams success. The freshman team had pride in their performance and gained the respect of their coaches, their spectator fan club and their varsity counterparts. We are all looking forward to their movement into the varsity program. 1st Row: J. Igo. B. Warren, M. Phillips. J. McAloon, M. Healy, S. Kane. C. Santos, N. Cesario 2nd Row: B. Hamilton, D. Senior quarterback Danny Sanderson did an outstanding job directing several different offenses, rushing for 840 yards, completing 42% of his passes, punting for an average of 42.8 yards and being selected 1st team all-division in punting and 2nd team as quarterback. Also selected for the all-division team were Senior Chris Bailey and Senior Tony Coleman. Players who performed in an outstanding manner are Mike Palmer in defensive end position, Donny Ashton in the defensive back and tight end positions. Mike Gibson in the backup quarterback and nickel back position, Steve Viera in the corner back position, Chris Patrinos as the place kicker extra point conversion and field goal kicker, Max Essery in the corner back posi- tion, Duke Ingraham in the running back position. Keith Hamilton in the defensive back position, Jim Carroll as wide receiver, Guy Goulet as guard, Jim Cates and Rick Wessels. Each of these players contributed to the very successful season of eight wins, 1 loss and 2 ties. Watch out for the Freshman team next year. They are hot for competi- tion and fight for a position on the varsity team. They performed the best ever, finishing first in their division with eight wins and no losses. Unfortunately they lost to East Greenwich in the playoffs. Portsmouth will be a contender for years to come. Thanks for your support in helping us have such a successful program. A special thanks to our marching band (the best in the State), the cheerleading squad and the Athletic Director in making our Patriots the team to watch. 1st Bow: M. Palmer. C. Bailey, D. Sanderson. Great leadership was provided by Pam Oliveira, Michele Mathieu, and Kim Cookinham while Jennifer Flad and Sue DeMay set the stage on the field for 1986. A shutout of Middletown and two wins over Barrington highlighted the season. Becky Silvia, Jayna Lalli, Joan Kelly and MVP Cindy Stone gained valuable experience along with many other returning veterans. The 1986 team should be rewarding and lots of fun. Mr. Frank J. After 2 years of competing in Class A the team has moved to Class B. The team is experiencing success and looking for a play- off spot. Senior members led by Co-Capt. Michelle Robin- son, Nicole Letiecq, Kathy Ayars, Jen Flad, Jen Catalin, Diana Brown, and Kim Sewell have made outstanding con- tributions to the success and progress of the program. Ju- niors Kate McCauley, Joan Kelly, Jayna Lalli, Kelly Don- nelly and Becky Jukoski form a very stong nucleus to continue that success. Cindy Stone leads the sophomores. The Junior Varsity is rapidly developing the winning habit and will contribute in the future. Teamwork and the friendships made will last a long time and be remembered in the coming years. This years team will be led by Junior Jim Carroll, the only returning starter from last year. Seniors Don Ashton, Craig Steiner, Scott Bor- den, Jim Hall, Mark Boutchia and Joe Sanchez, as well as Juniors Mark Rodrigues, Chris Harmon and Sophomores Pat Galvin and Duke Ingra- ham round out the team. The team is under the guidance of Coach A1 Sweet and his assistants Doug Clark and Ken Dolbashian. The outlook for the season will be promising once the Patriots get going. Playoffs are in sight with a strong showing predicted. The Junior Varsity will continue to improve behind the outstanding play of Pat Morton, Carl Lockett, Dennis Jerome, Ben Douglas, Brian Letiecq and Bob Benoit as well as others. The Freshman team will be led by Tim Galvin, Craig Borden, Eric Thomas, Mike Plourde, Peter Jerome and Jim Sefranek to name a few. 1st Row: C. Steiner. D. Ashton. J. Hall, S. Borden. C. Led by Senior Capt. Scott Borden, the state individual champion, the team will be looking forward to another possible championship. Junior Jeff Holden should pro- vide a strong back-up to Scott. Sophomores J.P. Gurin and John Cahoon will form a strong tandem to help the team. Freshman Kyle Phelps will provide the needed strength to produce a winner. Several other players will help to round out a team which will be looking for the championship. Dedication by all members and the pride that they show in P.H.S. lead to friendships that last a lifetime. 157 TENNIS - This year's Boys' Varsity Tennis Team played to a 3 and 5 record. The team co-captains were seniors Rich Tatem and Rob Sparks. Rich was one of the top singles players in the division and was so honored by his selection to the All League Team. Rich teamed up with Rob Sparks to play doubles. The highlight of the season for Rob and Rich was their match against the Ernst Brothers in the Brother Alban’s Doubles Tournament at Brown Univer- sity. Rich and Rob will graduate leaving a young and inexperienced team behind for next season. 1st Row: K. Nichols. J. Deffet, N. Kim, S. Kent. S. West 2nd Row: Mr. Harvey (Coach), R. Sparks, M. Much of the success can be attributed to Capt. Joan Kelly an All Division Singles selection. Play- ing strong tennis behind Joan were Sandy Aranyos. Karen Oliveira and Candace Borges. In the Doubles Dept, two of the three doubles teams were honored for their fine play being selected to the All Division Team. Senior Dee Warren teamed with Sophomore Cindy Stone and Senior Sue DeMay teamed with Sophomore Leticia Rozul to help the Patriots to a win- ning campaign. Most of the girls will return and so the future looks bright for the next campaign. 1st Row: S. Mello, B. Smith. C. Stone. D. Warren. L. Rozul 2nd Row: C. Borges. K. Oliveira. J. Kelly. S. Aranyos.
