Mathematics Mr. Peter O'Hara Dept. Head Mrs. Virginia Bescherer Mr. Ralph Harvey Mrs. Irene Cavalieri Mr. Frank Alfano Mrs. Eleanor Ferri Mrs. Debbie Wiant Summing Up The Mathematics Department has a program of studies which provides courses and instruction for all students. Over the past four years we have attempted to satisfy the great variety of needs and abilities of this graduat- ing class in mathematics. All members of the Class of ’85 have spent at least two years with us. It has been a pleasure teaching them in class and knowing them as individuals. We hope that they have made the most of our efforts and are well prepared mathematically for their future. Mrs. Rochelle Kieron 26

Head Mr. Barry O'Neill Mr. Homer Briand Mr. AJ Goes Although our Health Education program is only six years old, it services all the students in the building at all grade levels. The curriculum is well in place with supplemental agencies contributing to the program. We are very fortunate to have a full time health teacher who can devote all his efforts to an interesting, compre- hensive health program. With our juniors and seniors we are trying to concen- trate on life-time sports, which are types of activities they can continue after graduation. Our students in the ninth and tenth grades will continue the basic program emphasizing the development of skills and techniques in a variety of sports and games.

Science Mr. Raymond Sabourin ’Miss Joan Borkowski Mrs. Roberta St. John Mr. George Gallipeau Mr. Anthony Ciccone Technically Speaking Much concern has been expressed recently at the de- cline of science and math education in the nation. While the decline has been kept to a minimum in Portsmouth, it is evident that stricter requirements and an expan- sion of course offerings be initiated. While it is true that most people will not become scientists, is is also true that science and technology play an important part in our society and our world. The need to understand what is happening in the world requires a good science background. Perhaps the most important contribution that science Mr Philip Rezendes makes to education is the development of a questioning mind and the ability to take a problem, analyze it and then base your response on that analysis. This is the ultimate goal of science. The Science Department offers courses for all abilities and interests. The average student takes three science 27 courses during his stay at Portsmouth.
