Contents Faculty Seniors Underclassmen Organizations Activities Sports Advertisements ballooning is drawn into the “Fly Away” theme of the 1985 Legend by exhibit- ing the yearning in human nature to lift off to the high blue yonder. The restraints of daily life are left behind. Direction depends on the wind. Sky merges with water, reflections with reality. The pattern of nature, the dependence on the seasons and the relationships between neigh- boring communities can be seen clearly as if to suggest that the whole grand design could only have been laid out from above. The solitary effect of this experience on a basket- borne observer is to make the troubles of the world invisible. Things look right. There is a sense of proportion and man, far from feeling superior, can only be made to feel rightfully small. The restraints of the ground are no longer with you. Your direction and distance are gov- erned by the wind. Your attainable heights are dependent upon the energy you ignite in achieving that altitude. The yearbook staff wishes you future success in charting your course, achieving your dis- tance, soaring to your potential. For the pre- sent, however, let us all just “Fly Away”. Both the parade and the floats visibly expressed the school spirit that had been present during the entire preceding week. This spirit was echoed by the cheers of the fans at the football game. The theme of the Homecoming Dance was “An Enchanted Even- ing” and it accurately described the feelings of everyone there. Adding a spark to the already festive atmos- phere, the alumni contributed a great deal of warmth and excite- ment. Everyone enjoyed the music of the band, The Rockadials. Ferreira Assistant Principal Mr. Joseph Flood Dean of Students Mr. Albert Cataldo Director of Guidance A Yearbook Message To The Class of 1985 The years spent at Portsmouth High School have provided you with many opportunities and no doubt with many challenges. To be named among those receiving a diploma as members of the graduating class of ’85 would indicate that you took advantage of those opportu- nities. You acquired and applied knowledge pre- sented you by a dedicated faculty. You participat- ed in extra and curricular activities. Many of you worked at jobs available within the island commu- nity, budgeting your time between your quest for a diploma and earning money for your future needs. Perhaps challenges were as numerous as opportu- nities, both in and out of school. They involved decision making, and satisfaction or acceptance of the results of your selections. Sometimes others did not realize how difficult the options were for you forgetting that young adults have to face situations that are extremely hard to handle. You successfully seized the opportunities and con- quered the challenges. It is the wish of the Administration, Faculty and Staff that in the future you successfully continue to take advantage of the opportunities that come your way and meet the challenges you encounter. We hope that the counseling relationship and other services that they have received, will help the students realize their uniqueness as an individual and will enable them to strive for self-fulfillment. Best wishes and success from all of us. Social Studies Home Economics _ Mr. Louis Sousa Dept. Head Mr. Raymond Sullivan Mr. John Dwyer Mrs. Janet Bazar Depl. Head Mr. Raymond Masse Mr. Victor St. Laurent Mr. Donald Richards Mrs. Lynn Bell Herodotus Says ... ... a multitude of divergent personalities defining and clarifying a multiplicity of social and cultural problems Practice Makes Perfect Changes continued in the Home Economics Depart- ment this year as more students became involved in the program. Through the expertise of Mrs. Bazar and Mrs. Bell, students received instruction in Child Develop- ment, Food and Nutrition, and Textiles and Clothing. These courses provided opportunities for students to obtain knowledge and develop skills for dual roles and occupations as homemakers and wage earners and to prepare the competencies needed to manage their lives effectively in today’s complex society. Head Mr. Robert Rutkiewicz Head Mr. Joseph Lagano Miss Ann DelPiano Mr. Robert Sullivan Mrs. Lorraine Cortellessa A Balancing Act The Business Department provides high school stu- dents with training and activities which will prepare them for placement in the world of business and also for intelligent participation as citizens in the community. The department provides an understanding of the over- all business world and provides training to develop skills so students may enter into an assortment of business jobs. A Terminal Matter The Computer Department at Portsmouth High School is a busy place. The students work on a large scale computer called the DIGITAL PDP11 44. The comput- er system utilizes various terminals, a card reader, a line printer for Input Output, and a graphic display terminal. The department offers courses in BASIC, BASIC-PLUS, Pascal computer languages and comput- er operations. English The English Department tries to foster an interest in and if possible, a love of reading for information, for recreation, and for wisdom. It provides the students with some knowledge of the structure and the history of their language. It helps the students to clarify their thoughts and to express themselves clearly and logical- ly both critically and courteously to others. At the completion of four years of high school the English student will have covered grammar, composi- tion skills, vocabulary development, many varieties of literature and expository writing. English is the teaching of the skills that help us to communicate more clearly and explicitly with others whether verbally or in writing, of the skills that enable us to receive the accumulated knowledge and wisdom of our race, and of the appreciations, intellectual and aesthetic, that we derive there from. Head Mr. Barry O'Neill Mr. Homer Briand Mr. AJ Goes Although our Health Education program is only six years old, it services all the students in the building at all grade levels. The curriculum is well in place with supplemental agencies contributing to the program. We are very fortunate to have a full time health teacher who can devote all his efforts to an interesting, compre- hensive health program. With our juniors and seniors we are trying to concen- trate on life-time sports, which are types of activities they can continue after graduation. Our students in the ninth and tenth grades will continue the basic program emphasizing the development of skills and techniques in a variety of sports and games. Mathematics Mr. Peter O'Hara Dept. Head Mrs. Virginia Bescherer Mr. Ralph Harvey Mrs. Irene Cavalieri Mr. Frank Alfano Mrs. Eleanor Ferri Mrs. Debbie Wiant Summing Up The Mathematics Department has a program of studies which provides courses and instruction for all students. Over the past four years we have attempted to satisfy the great variety of needs and abilities of this graduat- ing class in mathematics. All members of the Class of ’85 have spent at least two years with us. It has been a pleasure teaching them in class and knowing them as individuals. We hope that they have made the most of our efforts and are well prepared mathematically for their future. Mrs. Rochelle Kieron 26 Science Mr. Raymond Sabourin ’Miss Joan Borkowski Mrs. Roberta St. John Mr. George Gallipeau Mr. Anthony Ciccone Technically Speaking Much concern has been expressed recently at the de- cline of science and math education in the nation. While the decline has been kept to a minimum in Portsmouth, it is evident that stricter requirements and an expan- sion of course offerings be initiated. While it is true that most people will not become scientists, is is also true that science and technology play an important part in our society and our world. The need to understand what is happening in the world requires a good science background. Perhaps the most important contribution that science Mr Philip Rezendes makes to education is the development of a questioning mind and the ability to take a problem, analyze it and then base your response on that analysis. This is the ultimate goal of science. The Science Department offers courses for all abilities and interests. The average student takes three science 27 courses during his stay at Portsmouth. The media staff helps guide each student in his learning activities and supports his teachers in the design and use of innovative methods. Words Into Pictures Art furnishes the opportunity to experiment with many media. This contributes to individual and group work in planning and learning, and furthers the development of independence. Oil, water colors, tempera, clay, wood, ceramics, and many other media are artistic vehicles by which the pupil may give expression to his ideas, emotions, and general outlook on life. What do you mean I’m bald? Resource Music Mrs. Sue Cassese Mrs. Fay Sisson Ms. Donna Raflery Mr. Raymond Ainsworth Dept Head Mrs. Helen Ponialowski Mrs. Joyce Mitchell Mr. Albert Affonso Mr. Peter Kekligian A Special Touch This program is designed to provide academic support and individualized instruction for students. These ser- vices are offered in a resource or classroom setting. All areas of the high school curriculum are incorporated in the individualized educational plan. On An Upbeat The Music Department has been very active again this year. The various vocal and instrumental groups have performed at concerts, athletic events, parades and open house. The elective music classes include chouus and band at various levels, piano, guitar, theory, stage band, and woodwind ensemble, and after school reher- sals for other non-scheduled classes. The performing groups of the Music Department give students an op- portunity to express themselves as solists as well as part of a larger performing group. Mr. Gary Point 31 4 Modern Language Substitutes Mr. Robert Paradis Mrs. Shirley Chase Mrs. Barbara Reed International Flavor Mrs. Christine Polak Depl. Head Mr. Joao Arruda One of the main goals of the Modern Language Depart- ment is to interest students in foreign cultures and to provide the basic language skills necessary in dealing with non-English speakers. Traveling to France, Cana- da, Mexico, and Spain has given many students an appreciation of foreign customs. The Language Club promotes an international perspec- tive by sponsoring a Bolivian foster child. It also pre- sents an International Night dinner. French, Spanish or Portuguese cuisine, perpared by students or sampled in local restaurants, is a favorite learning activity. In essence, instruction includes not only grammar drills and word lists, but also a better understanding of other peoples and their ways of life. Mr. William McGreavy 33 Counselor To The Class Of 1985 I am grateful for the opportunity to express to you my appreciation for your attention and cooperation dur- ing these past four years. I am very confident in the knowledge that the Class of 1985 will bring to the World much success. In so doing, I leave you with a brief message: You are the future of our world. Becoming a success in a career will certainly have its rewards, but without a thirst for Peace, Justice and a love and sensitivity toward all mankind, the World will not become a better place. In a World filled with turmoil and discontent, you have an enor- mous responsibility in carrying out this message. “May God Speed”-on your journey. Joseph Narcizo Advisor Seniors These are difficult and trying times the world over. Yet there is no reason to ap- proach them with anything but high cour- age. The era ahead will, in my opinion, be a very interesting one with definite chal- lenges to all. Since you are all well equipped to meet these challenges, you will have no fear. I know that there are many among you who will contribute largely to the welfare of our country. As the years go by, especially as you be- come more securely established in society, I urge you to remain in close contact with Portsmouth High School. Those who con- tinue after you will need and appreciate your active support. In closing, permit me to extend my best wishes for your continued success, health, and happiness in the years to come. H. S. were filled with apprehension, confusion, and excite- ment. We were determined, high spirited and knew that it wouldn’t be long before we’d fit in. In our Sophomore year we were more at ease. Being accepted, we learned to relax and enjoy life at the high school. We became more involved in school activities and learned how to work together. With our junior year came more and more responsibilities. We began to plan our future but at the same time took time out to enjoy the present: parties, dances, and more parties! Mixed emotions were part of our Senior year. We were glad to finally be graduat- ing but at the sametime fearful for what may lie ahead of us. For these were probably the best times of our four years at P. H. S. and the most unforgetable. We learned more at P. H. S. than just basics; we learned from our mistakes and successes about the real world and ourselves. It’s a good feeling to look back and see how far we’ve come and how much we’ve accomplished and look to the future in the hopes of even better things to come. Good luck Class of 1985. Please God. I’m Only 17! The day I died was an ordinary school day. How I wish I had taken the bus! But I was too cool for the bus. I remember I wheezled the car out of mom. Special favor, I pleaded. All the kids drive. When the 2:50 bell rang. I threw all my books in the locker. I was free until 8:40 tomorrow morning! I ran to the parking lot, excited at the thought of driving a car and being my own boss. Free! It doesn't matter how the accident happened. I was goofing off—going too fast. Taking crazy chances. But I was enjoying my freedom and having fun. The last thing I remember was passing an old lady who seemed to be going awfully slow. I heard the deafmg crash and felt a terrific jolt. Glass and steel flew everywhere. My whole body seemed to be turning inside out. I heard myself scream. Suddenly I awakened: it was quiet. A police officer was stand- ing over me. Then I saw a doctor. My body was mangled. I was saturated with blood. Pieces of jagged glass were stick- ing out all over. Strange that I couldn’t feel anything... Hey, don’t pull that sheet over my head. I can’t be dead. Later I was placed in a drawer. My folks had to identify me. Why did they have to see me like this? Why did I have to look at mom’s eyes when she faced the most terrible ordeal of her life? Dad suddenly looked like an old man. He told the man in charge. Yes. he is my son. The funeral was a weird experience. I saw all my relatives and friends walk toward the casket. They passed by. one by one. and looked at me with the saddest eyes I’ve ever seen. Some of my buddies were crying. A few of the girls touched my hand and sobbed as they walked away. Please . . . somebody . . . wake me up! Get me out of here. I can’t bear to see my mom and dad so broken up. My grandpar- ents are so racked with grief they can barely walk. My broth- er and sisters are like zombies. They move like robots in a daze, everybody! No one can believe this. And I can’t believe it, either. Please don’t bury me! I’m not dead! I have a lot of living to do! I want to laugh and run again. I want to sing and dance. Please don’t put me in the ground. I promise if you give me just one more chance. God, I’ll be the most careful driver in the whole world. All I want is one more chance. Please God. I’m only 17! P.H.A.D.D. 1st Row: D. Manning. R. Chase. L. Uperti. M. Morgan. C. Coyne. B. Silvia. 2nd Row: D. Taylor. K. James. A. Kieron, S. Kieron, C. Rosario, J. Cronin. D. Platt.
